AT THE COLLEGES
WesternU Introduces Virtual Reality Anatomy

Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona has opened a Virtual Reality Learning Center on campus that will revolutionize how many courses are taught, especially anatomy. The Anatomage virtual anatomy table, as well as several zSpace 3-D workstations, allows our students to be "hands on" about key parts of their learning -- without needing to use the willed bodies that remain a critical resource for medical education.

The technology now in place at WesternU enhances our “flipped classroom” model of instruction, where course content is delivered to students using high-powered, adaptive learning software, employing algorithms to predict and track proficiency of student knowledge. The “flipped” part provides students with groups or stations to learn hands-on while interacting and solving problems. At the heart of the flipped classroom model is active learning: Students review didactic information in advance of classroom sessions so that classroom sessions can be used for active or kinesthetic learning. PODIATRISTS AND PUBLIC HEALTH
FL Podiatrist Participates in Public Health Meeting

This week, the Florida Public Health Association (FPHA) met for its 126th Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL. This year's theme centered on disaster preparedness. Participating and in attendance was Chet Evans, MS, DPM, past chair and long-time member of the Podiatric Health Section of the American Public Health Association.

Dr. Chet Evans with FPHA Executive Director, Sandy Magyar

Dr. Evans encouraged all podiatric physicians to join the American Public Health Association, or at least their state component and have a voice in these issues. He is currently the Executive Director of the Rollins College Center for Health Innovation and was Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine during Hurricane Andrew, which devastated South Florida in 1992.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

10 Strategies for Protecting Patient Data - Part 7

7. Make Privacy an Integral Part of New Technology Adoption

The pace at which new technology is being introduced into the healthcare industry is increasing, with thousands of new health-related mobile applications available this year, devices such as Apple Watch and the Internet of Things. But we have little evidence that patient privacy or security features are being considered. The healthcare industry and its technology service providers need to take advantage of existing technology as well as how they design, construct, and deliver new tools.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Unidentified Lesion

This 78 year old female of east Indian descent noticed a nodule ~1 month ago. There was no pain then or now (even to palpation) and no pruritis. She started applying OTC cortisone daily. No other treatment was rendered or sought. Medical history: NIDDM (controlled) A1c 5.9 ~3-4 weeks ago, HTN (controlled), occasional intermittant claudication symptoms.

Unidentified lesion

The lesion is on lateral aspect with a smaller one on medial aspect of left LE. Right LE is clear. I have not biopsied the lesion as yet. Thoughts?

QUERIES (EMR)
Query: Dragon Dictation and Traknet 3.0

I had been using Dragon dictation successfully in TRAKnet 2. Now that I am working in TRAKnet 3.0, Dragon is no longer working well at all. I have spoken with Nuance, the makers of Dragon, and have been told that they have no Dragon versions (including Dragon Medical) that work in TRAKnet 3.  Nuance did suggest use of the "dictation box" but that's not a very practical solution for the long-term. I am wondering what others are doing who are facing this same problem. Are there other dictation software programs that work in TRAKnet 3.0?

QUERIES (ICD-10)
Query: Correlation Between Board Certification and ICD-10?

ICD-10 is nearly upon us. Here is a question which may have no value and no correlation to our practices, but I am asking because I fear any adverse answer: Will there be any correlation between the ICD-10 changeover that may affect board certification? I mean affecting those who are diplomates as well as those who aspire to be.  If there are correlations, what are they?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Decrease in New Patient Visits
From: Name Withheld

Recently, new patient volume has decreased in the office which is usually quite busy. There are seasonal fluctuations which most offices experience. It is possible that all the changes in third-party payers (increased deductibles, co-pays, coverage policy, and perhaps ACA) could be responsible for this phenomenon. However, there is the suspicion of front office staff intentionally turning away patients to reduce the workload. Suggestions, comments, and guidance will be appreciated on a way to possibly address this issue to determine, if indeed, this is occurring.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
RE: Are We Still "Kings" of Orthotics? (Dennis Shavelson, DPM)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

Dr. Shavelson's fears are well founded. For years, podiatry has been on the brink of losing our domain over biomechanics and custom foot orthoses. There is, however, a light at the end of the tunnel. In this month's issue of the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, there is a well written and well researched paper titled: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Custom Foot Orthoses for the Treatment of Plantar Heel Pain by Wrobel, Fleischer, et al. In it, the authors showed that custom foot orthoses made a positive difference in the management of heel pain as compared to OTC orthotics and sham orthotics. Kudos to the authors for writing such a fine paper as well as the APMA for providing a grant for the actual study.

This paper is just the beginning. We need to see more definitive research and papers published on how biomechanics and custom orthotics impact each and every condition that podiatrists treat. Only then will be able to state with certainty that orthotics do make a difference in the management of certain or all pedal conditions. At that time, podiatrists will once again reign as kings and queens over biomechanics and orthotics.
