Botox Can be Used to Treat Foot Conditions: PA Podiatrist
Some types of foot aches, including plantar fasciitis, have shown improvement following Botox injections, with one small study showing it to be more effective than steroid treatments.
|
|
Dr. Albert D'Angelantonio |
“Botox can be used to treat a variety of conditions in the feet and lower extremities such as overactive sweating of the feet or tight muscle and tendon contracture of the calves, which can arise from wearing high heels or from other acquired conditions,” Albert D'Angelantonio, DPM, chief of Podiatry/Foot and Ankle Surgery in Plastic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, told Penn Medicine News.

NY Podiatrist Discusses Exfoliant Peel for Feet
Baby Foot, an exfoliating peel has a cult-like following on Amazon. This peel, which touts an impressive 11.5k reviews on Amazon alone, claims it can make skin feel as soft as a baby’s by removing all those layers of built-up dead skin on your feet that are causing calluses and dryness to begin with. Baby Foot contains chemicals though—specifically, the gel is a blend of salicylic acid and alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) like citric, glycolic, and lactic acids, which according to Dennis Shavelson, DPM, an NYC-based podiatrist, are the “gold standard of skin-line rejuvenators and chemical peels.”
|
|
Dr. Dennis Shavelson |
According to Dr. Shavelson, since those outer layers of skin on our feet serve as protection against everyday friction and trauma, they can get callused and hardened easily. Unlike foot masks, which are moisturizing and tend to have a deeply restorative effect on skin, Baby Foot triggers a response that causes all that thick, cracked, hardened, and/or otherwise damaged skin to shed like a snake’s, so it comes off in flakes or strips. Gross, but in theory, also highly satisfying.

Achilles Tendon Injuries Can be Prevented: Aussie Podiatrist
Mark Lin, one of Australia’s leading sports podiatrists and director of Sydney-based Footwork Podiatry, says that “over my last 10 years in practice, 90% of the clients that I have seen have been suffering from underlying issues in their calf muscles , these have often been uncovered due to the surging of other more painful problems, such as Achilles issues.”
|
|
Mark Lin |
Lin recommends preventative measures to avoid requiring long-term recovery, or even surgery. He explains, “a weak or tight calf would always restrict movement in the ankles and add stress to the Achilles tendon. The resulting weakness and scarring from this restriction and stress will cause muscular tissues to become inelastic, making the Achilles prone to tearing or even rupturing.”

VA Podiatrist Convicted for Unwanted Kiss in Office
A Roanoke County doctor was sentenced to a year in jail (with all but 30 days suspended) for kissing a patient without her consent. Dr. Peter Floyd Kelly, who’s licensed in podiatry, was found guilty of misdemeanor assault at the conclusion of a bench trial in Roanoke County General District Court. An appeal will be filed and the case will be heard again in Circuit Court, said defense attorney Seth Weston. “It’s a bad, ham-handed attempt to start a relationship with somebody,” Weston said. “Certainly, it’s not expected for that to happen in a doctor’s office. But it’s not illegal.” The judge disagreed and described the circumstances as egregious at one point.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Reasons to Rethink Your Patient Communication Strategy - Part 4
Ignoring the communications demands of younger patients is not a winning strategy for any medical practice. Here are some reasons why a unified communications strategy makes sense.
4. Estimated lifetime patient value is high - Patients of all ages are turning to the Internet to research their health conditions and check their symptoms. And when they need care, patients also are researching specific healthcare providers and facilities. According to a MARS Consumer Health Study, about three-quarters of Americans report going online to research health and wellness information, while more than one-third report using the internet to research a specific diagnosis, condition or set of symptoms. And since the estimated lifetime value of a new patient has been pegged at $600,000, investing in technology to improve patient communications can quickly pay for itself.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1 | |
From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM
It’s true that Zero Drop Shoes are the opposite of Stilettos. Unfortunately, in a civilized society, both are biomechanically unhealthy. “Pawing around in bare feet” on hard ground is bad for most feet. Living life barefoot (or in Zero Drop Shoes) causes pedal collapse, develops forefoot spread, wider feet, and more protective callus in time.
Murray and Drillis published that as we age, we imperceptibly walk slower and take smaller steps (Haywood K, Getchell N: Lifespan Motor Development; sixth edition, Page 131). They called this “pre-senile and senile walking”. This suggests that Zero Drop Shoes will age us functionally and reduce activity level over time as if we had aged.
The evidence confirms that it is our muscle engines that ultimately stabilize, support, and balance the foot when weighted. Since muscle engines leverage and power best in a 1-1.5” heel from the ground up, this translates to mean that if you have been over-active, have heel pain, postural symptoms, or an injury, a small heeled shoe is a better choice than either a flat or a stiletto. Ask yourself why work boots, hiking shoes, cowboy boots, dance shoes, cross-fit shoes, and most sport shoes played on hard surfaces all have a heel?
Dennis Shavelson, DPM, NY, NY

The American Society of Podiatric Medicine congratulates our executive board member, Dr. Arthur Helfand, on having a chapter published in a text on gerontology. Because of Dr. Helfand's teachings, The American Society of Podiatric Medicine has now dedicated itself to advancing the cause of geriatrics within our profession. To this end, all future lectures and conferences sponsored or co-sponsored by the ASPM will contain lectures on podo-geriatrics.
