OR Podiatrist First in Area to Offer Ankle Replacement Surgery
It was snowing and really cold when podiatrist Dr. Brandon Bishop and his wife left their Dayton, Ohio, home in February to fly to Oregon for an interview. He had jumped at the chance when he heard that Centennial Orthopedics in Roseburg had an opening. He also had something important to offer the community he found so appealing.

Once Centennial brought Bishop into its practice, Roseburg was able to offer ankle replacements — a surgery no one was providing there. Until Bishop arrived, Douglas County residents had to travel to Eugene or Grants Pass to get the surgery.

CA Podiatrist Aims at World Record Shoe Drive
One of the biggest shoe drives in Long Beach will take place Saturday, with a goal of collecting 20,000 pairs this year. “We applied for the Guinness Book of World Records,” organizer Dr. S. Don Kim said.
|
|
Dr. S. Don Kim |
Kim said the event started in 1990, after he was in surgical resident training at Baja Project for the Crippled Children’s Clinic in Mexico. “I came out of the surgery room and was watching the kids play soccer without shoes,” he said. He said he decided they needed proper shoes, and in 1997, he collected about 5,000 pairs, many from colleagues.

SANUWAVE Health Submits Petition for dermaPACE System to Treat DFUs
SANUWAVE Health, Inc. has announced that it has submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) a de novo petition requesting Agency review and classification of the dermaPACE System for treating Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFU) as a Class II device. CMS Mulling Rules To Prevent Providers from Steering Patients into ACA Plans
A U.S. government health agency on Thursday said that it was considering new rules to prevent healthcare providers or related groups from steering patients into Obamacare individual insurance plans instead of Medicare or Medicaid in order to receive higher payments for medical services.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on Thursday said it is seeking public comment and considering rules including prohibiting or limiting premium payments or cost-sharing for the individual marketplace plans, monetary penalties and limits on such payments.

8 Patient Collection Mistakes to Avoid - Part 4
Medical practices are caught in the cross-hairs when it comes to collecting patient co-pays and deductibles. On one hand, they are obligated by their contracts with payers to collect patient cost-sharing amounts; on the other hand, patients are being faced with unprecedented medical bills. If you are caught in this collection free-for-all, here are the eight worst things you can do.
"If you are going to be a little more upfront in terms of requesting some form of payment or a commitment to payment, make sure the staff knows exactly what they should say. Don't apologize." - Jeff Wood

Query: Shoe Sterilizers and Sprays
What experiences have PM News readers had with the various ultraviolet shoe sterilizers (Sterishoe, Shoezap, etc.), and/or the various shoe sprays (Clean Sweep by Tetra, Clarus Shoe Spray by Bako)? How effective are they? Do patients respond well to them?

Query: Car Loan Discounts for Podiatrists
For many years, I have been a member of the APMA, Florida Podiatric Medical Association, and the OPEIU guild. They all offer benefits and some valuable discounts. I was surprised to find out that none of those groups offer automobile loans. Are there any lending institutions, credit unions, etc. that offer competitive auto loans to the podiatric field?

From: Pam Thompson
Dr. Lullove states, "Beginning THIS year, CMS and HHS have begun tying and targeting 30% of all reimbursement to quality initiatives. This includes PQRS. By 2018, the number will be 50%. By 2021, 90%. It is not a matter of whether as a provider you WANT to participate by reporting quality measures; it is a question of whether or not you want to participate in MEDICARE at all."
The 30% of all Medicare reimbursements tied to quality initiatives Dr. Lullove mentions is hospital reimbursement, which has been payment-affected by PQRS since 2013. Payments made under the acute inpatient prospective payment system (IPPS) alone totaled $120 billion and accounted for about 25 percent of all Medicare spending in 2013, and by regulation was...
