PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS

Surgery by CA Podiatrist Gives Hope to Down's Patient Who Wants to Dance

A Van Nuys woman with Down syndrome is going through a painful surgical process on her feet in order to continue pursuing her passion of dancing. Susie Schallert, 46, lights up on the dance floor. “I’m a dancing fool. I am a lucky dancer. It is my dream to be in a show,” she said. But, as a teen, her feet stopped growing and bunions started reshaping her toes.

Dr. Thomas Clemente

When podiatrist Dr. Thomas Clemente met Susie about a year ago, he couldn’t believe she was walking, much less dancing. “Her (feet) are probably the worst I’ve seen,” said Clemente. Clemente has completed the first of four surgeries that Susie will undergo. It was a painful procedure, but the payoff was immediately noticeable. Four pins were placed in Susie’s foot and she will eventually have a total joint replacement.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES

Main Issue with Diabetics is Neuropathy: NY Podiatrist

It's often said that pain is one of God's greatest inventions — the human body letting you know something's wrong. Gregg Atlas, DPM, CWS, DABPS, medical co-director of Catskill Regional Medical Center's new Wound Healing Center with co-director Gary Good, MD, knows this saying well. He treats people with diabetes who didn't know they had badly infected wounds, because they couldn't feel them.

Dr. Gregg Atlas

Atlas' treatments include, but are not limited to, skin grafts and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. "The main issue with diabetics is neuropathy, where they lose the ability to feel pain and pressure to their feet," he said. "They could walk around with something as small as a grain of sand in their shoe that can rub and irritate and eventually break down skin and become an ulcer."

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR

Feet Not Meant to Be Crammed Into High Heels: CA Podiatrist

A study published recently in The Journal of Applied Physiology reportedly found that wearing high heels could lead to permanent damage of the calf muscles by increasing the mechanical strain on the muscles  and shortening the muscles’ fibers, all thanks to the flexed, toes-pointed position of the feet that remains even after removing the shoes.

Dr. Braxton Little

“The structure of the foot is just not meant to be crammed in the shoe that way,” Dr. Braxton Little, a podiatrist at the UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, CA, told ABC News, as published on the network’s website. “It just puts the body in a very unnatural position.”

PODIATRIC INVENTORS IN THE NEWS

NJ Podiatrist Invents and Markets Samurai Insoles

Samurai Insoles was founded by Dr. Tom Lembo, who explains why other shoe insoles often don’t cure foot pain: “I created Samurai Insoles after noticing how ineffective many other insole products were at curing foot pain and back pain. In many cases, the insoles provided either too much support or too little."

Dr. Tom Lembo

"My insoles offer a comfortable medium ground that is designed to offer maximum relief from foot pain while also curing other ailments on the body - like back pain and poor posture. As a podiatrist, my goal is to help anyone solve their foot pain problems with an easy, affordable, and effective solution.”

Make the Most of Every Day

Amber Rae, founder and CEO of The Bold Academy and a Forbes “Up and Comer,“ created the “Work, Play, Fit, and Push“ method for making the most of each day—both professionally and personally. Here is her strategy:

1. Work. Map out your top three work priorities for each day. Rae sometimes maps out her entire week on a Sunday if her priorities are clear. However, you can map them out on a day-to-day basis. Just make sure you start every day with a clear list of must-dos.
2. Play. Increase your creativity, blow off steam and reflect by allowing yourself time to experience nature, create art, read and spend time having fun with the people you care about.
3. Fit. Exercise and a healthy lifestyle help you better manage stress, conflict, decision making and problem solving. Rae suggests aiming for at least 30 minutes of movement each day.
4. Push. Rae does something that “scares“ her almost every day to ensure that she is continuously learning and growing. Choose activities or tasks that push you out of your comfort zone and challenge you. For example, Rae might interview someone she deeply respects or write about an uncomfortable topic to push herself.

QUERIES (CLINCAL)

Query: Wart Treatments

I have used Cantharidin in the office for plantar warts for years with great results. I’m now finding it impossible to order this in the U.S. In the past, I have used freezing, podophylin, and salicylic acid with less than optimal results. I’m interested in hearing what others are using with good results.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (RESIDENCY SHORTAGE CRISIS) - PART 1

RE: I Want to Work as a Podiatrist
From: Sarah Montgomery, DPM

My name is Sarah Montgomery and I graduated from TUSPM in 2010. I chose TUSPM because I went to  Temple for my undergraduate education and when I visited the podiatry school, it felt comfortable, as if everyone were there to support each other. When I interviewed there, the school made it clear that everyone would match with a residency program, so there would be nothing to worry about once graduation rolled around.

Unfortunately, I found out that that was not the case. I asked during the lengthy (and expensive) residency application process what would happen if I did not match and was told to....

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (RESIDENCY SHORTAGE CRISIS) - PART 2

RE: Unmatched Student Welcomed to Attend ResEd Summit This Weekend
From: Alan Sherman, DPM

The 5th PRESENT Residency Education Summit will begin this Friday in Teaneck, NJ and though all residents and student are welcomed and pay no registration fee, we’d like to extend a warm special welcome to any unmatched senior students. After reading some of the great Unmatched Student of the Day profiles being published by Dr. Block, I realized that these students should be extended every opportunity that we can give them to improve themselves professionally until they are matched with positions.

They may especially be interested in the Town Hall Meeting we are having on the Residency Shortage issue at 6 PM this Friday evening.  It’s going to be a collegial open discussion on what happened, why it happened, what we can do to help unmatched students now, and what we can continue to do to make sure this never, ever happens again. The conference is being held at the Marriott Teaneck at Glenpointe…more information is available at resedsummiteast.com

RE: Diagnostic Ultrasound (Michael Forman, DPM)
From: Todd Lamster, DPM

First, to those who don't believe in its utility, have any of you used an ultrasound machine for guidance during an injection? What is your experience that leads you to believe that you don't need it?

I used to be in that camp and thought the same thoughts, and figured that if I can't inject the fascia or a joint by now, I should be doing something else. Wrong! I know anatomy as well as anyone else, and I can tell you...
