CA Podiatrist Trying to Save Happy Foot/Sad Foot Sign
The sign featuring an anthropomorphic foot that has been spinning at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Benton Way since 1985 is slated to leave Silver Lake this month—but there could still be hope to save the neighborhood landmark. It was announced in late June that Sunset Foot Clinic, the medical office outside of where the so-called Happy Foot/Sad Foot sign stands, would be relocating to nearby Rampart Village and taking its sign along with it. But Dr. Thomas Lim isn’t letting the sign go gentle into that good night (or to Westlake, as it were).

The podiatrist and preservationist is hosting a pop-up shop inside the clinic featuring Happy Foot/Sad Foot merchandise by local artists, including pins from World Famous Original, handmade pillows by Billy Kheel, and T-shirts from Y-Que. According to a post on Billy Kheel’s Instagram, the pop-up is meant to raise both awareness and “funds for [the sign’s] designation as a historic resource to the people of Los Angeles.”

When Buying Shoes, Comfort Reigns Supreme: NY Podiatrist
When it comes to the best shoes, finding the right fit is essential, but comfort reigns supreme. And according to the professionals, there are a few brands that fit the bill in terms of support and all-day comfort. Board-certified podiatrist Ernest L. Isaacson, DPM tells Yahoo Lifestyle that the best shoes simply fit and feel good. “Most feet feel better in a low heel or something with good arch support, preferably a custom orthotic, so try to avoid anything too flat or flip-flops for long walks,” he explains.
|
|
Dr. Ernest Isaacson |
As far as fit goes, Isaacson says it’s important to make sure there’s “plenty of room for the true width of the foot” which you can determine by standing up at the end of the day when feet are swollen. Isaacson recommends New Balance sneakers for comfort and support, especially for those with wide feet.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Reasons to Rethink Your Patient Communication Strategy - Part 2
Ignoring the communications demands of younger patients is not a winning strategy for any medical practice. Here are some reasons why a unified communications strategy makes sense.
2. Digital natives demand greater access - Although Americans of all ages rely on their smartphones to accomplish an ever-expanding array of tasks, millennials and Generation Z are more likely to think of their phones as extensions of themselves. For millennials, phone calls remain the primary method for appointment setting, in-person meetings, and communicating with physicians, but other options are growing: 9 percent set appointments through SMS/text and 5 percent through chat/instant message (IM). Communications with physicians are conducted through SMS/text 5 percent of the time while 3 percent of those conversations take place via chat/IM.

Query: Payment for Residency Rotations?
I have a question for residency directors. Do department heads at your institution expect to be paid to allow podiatric residents to do their rotations in their departments?

From: George Jacobson, DPM
The population figures are quite daunting and telling of the foreboding future. But what is important for us right now is the actual percentage of each age group that visits a podiatrist’s office now. I don’t want to be electronically attached to my patients 24/7. They can call me if they need me after hours but a social media type practice, good Lord. We are seeing numerous psychological and sociological effects on these generations from online, e-socialization. I don’t want an e-physician relationship (though it’s coming).
I treat and evaluate three dimensional patients. We still touch our patients, which can’t be done online. E-practice may be what’s needed for a successful business model, but I chose to give up some success for sanity. I know I’ve taken this discussion beyond communicating appointments, but we have had patients try to get us to e-mail and text them. I’m not opening that Pandora’s box.
George Jacobson, DPM, Hollywood, FL
