PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
MA Podiatrist Offers Safety Tips for Hikers

In the United States, more than 38 million people annually go hiking, and the popular recreational activity has recently seen increased interest in its more competitive and extreme forms. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) reminds all hikers, whether avid or recreational, that injuries are common and careful planning is essential to reducing the likelihood of injury and complications when they occur.

Dr. Gregory Catalano

“We’ve all seen hikers accomplishing great feats such as completing the Pacific Crest or Appalachian Trails and these stories inspire us to undertake more challenging or longer hikes,” says Gregory Catalano, DPM, FACFAS, a Massachusetts-based foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. “As the number of people hiking increases and they take on more challenging terrain, we are seeing an increase in injuries of all levels of hikers, from Achilles tendon and heel pain to more traumatic injuries including sprains and fractures of the foot and ankle as well as stress fractures of the leg, foot and ankle.”

APMA COMPONENT NEWS
AAPSM Responds to Niles Paul Injury

The Washington Redskins announced that their tight end Niles Paul must have surgery to repair a fractured and dislocated left ankle. The surgery is scheduled to be performed today and will be an ORIF (Open Reduction Internal Fixation) of an ankle fracture during which plates and screws will be used to allow the fracture and dislocation to heal properly. The usual post-operative course is non-weight-bearing for 3-6 weeks. His return to weight-bearing and activity would be 6-12 weeks depending on the severity of the fractured bones and whether multiple bones are involved.

Niles Paul Suffers fractured and dislocated left ankle

This type of injury and surgical repair was analyzed in a study conducted by American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine Board member Amol Saxena, DPM and his Fellow Andrew Yun, DPM. The paper is currently being submitted to the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery and won 1st place at the Joint Commission on Sports Medicine and Science this past February in Memphis. In the study, 38 patients had fibular fractures repaired and took an average of 4 months to return to activity. In a professional athlete who is younger and has access to daily rehab professionals and equipment, the return to sport time is typically faster.

Sport-Specific Shoes Prevent Injuries: Bahamas Podiatrist

"Sport-specific shoes can really affect the way your child plays and enjoys sports. If your child participates in sports regularly, at least two to three times a week, they should wear a sport-specific shoe," says podiatrist Dr. Monique Mitchell.

Dr. Monique Mitchell

"Purchasing a shoe designed for the exact sport not only improves performance on the court or field, but also helps prevent serious foot and ankle injuries. The shoe will fit properly and adjust for movements of the feet particular to a sport," says Mitchell.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY

10 Strategies for Protecting Patient Data - Part 4

4. Assess Risks

Practices must have solid processes in place for assessing risk with new systems, devices, services, and partners, and determine how best to use their power as purchasers to weed out those that don’t meet best security practices.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Joel Lang, DPM

If you are paying 4.5% in credit card charges that amount to $5,000 per year, you are therefore receiving more than $110,000 in credit card payments per year. You should celebrate that. For one thing, when added to cash, check and insurance payments, you are operating a practice well into the mid 6 figures in income. Even if your credit card payments represent 50% of your total income (which is unlikely), the $5,000 will represent only 2% of your income. To be certain of immediate payment instead of hoping for a future payment, the 2% is well spent.

I think many of your colleagues would be most pleased to have your problem. In addition, when credit card payments are made more burdensome for patients, they may opt to say “send me a bill”. Then you incur billing costs, delayed payments, and a probable increase in uncollected accounts receivable. Worse yet, you may lose the patient altogether. If you want to save $5,000, drive your present car one more year. Pay the 4.5% and be happy you are earning a good living. We sometimes see our glass as half-empty when it should be viewed as half-full.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER)
From: Lloyd S. Smith, DPM

CPT 64450 is a problematic code. It used to be the correct code for injecting neuromas with cortisone. That was changed years ago as CMS demanded that CPT and RUC create new codes and revised values.  It is still in the CPT book but now should only be used in relatively rare instances and NOT for neuromas. The correct code for a cortisone injection with a neuroma diagnosis is CPT 64455.

CPT 64632 is to be used for sclerosing injections with alcohol. There are restrictions by many carriers on use of CPT 64632. In any case, there are stories of CPT 64450 abuse due to ignorance about these changes and differential reimbursements.

RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day

How to show off your toes in winter?

These 'toe shoes' are an ultimate piece of art for every fashionista in search of the most unique shoe. The artist symbolizes the personality of the woman, her unique identity caught in an original artwork. The artist paints the woman's toes by hand on the outside of the shoe. This gives the shoe a unique signature of the person who wears the shoe.
