KSUCPM XO Group Holds Family Picnic

The American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) has begun its fifth year providing a comprehensive practice management class for students during their four years at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM).  A generous $20,000 educational grant is provided annually by Powerstep to make this curriculum possible.

Dr. Hal Ornstein addresses attendees of KSUCPM Picnic

The KSUCPM XO Group was formed by AAPPM and its KSUCPM Student Chapter as a support mechanism for the spouses and significant others and to advise them about life as a podiatry student. The KSUCPM XO Group also allows families to meet each other. This past weekend, the KSUCPM AAPPM Student Chapter held a family picnic for the XO Group for all students with spouses and significant others, their children, and parents.

PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS

MI Podiatrist Uses Ponseti Method to Treat Double Clubfoot

Little Reina from Honduras is adjusting to a strange new world – one with doctors and swimming pools, casts, and bubble-makers – as she gets her double clubfoot corrected. “She’s a 4-year-old away from everything she knows. I don’t know that I would be that brave,” says her host mother, Carol Nyeholt.

Dr. Michael David

Reina has just begun treatment. Dr. Michael David, a podiatrist, gave her the first in a series of leg casts that will gradually straighten her feet. "Today was the first visit where I performed gentle manipulation of the foot according to the protocol outlined by Dr. Ponseti. I applied a plaster cast which will be removed in 7-10 days. Then we will remove the cast and use gentle manipulation, and re-apply the cast until we achieve full correction."

PODIATRISTS AND RESEARCH

GA Podiatrist to Publish Research Based on Stem Cell Treatment

Two years ago, when Bobby Rice was battling flesh-eating bacteria and a 103-degree fever, he saw a vision of his mother standing before him. His time hadn't come yet, she told him. And he listened. Not only did Rice battle back from the disease, but he made medical history when Dalton, GA, podiatrist Dr. Spence Misner used $100,000 worth of donated placental stem cells to help regrow the flesh in Rice's bacteria-ravaged foot. Rice, who was supposed to be an amputee, soon was walking again.

Dr. Spence Misner

But on Aug. 8, Bobby Rice's time came. He died at age 51. The Hamilton County medical examiner has not yet released an official cause of death, but Misner said the examiner's office told him they believe it was a heart attack. Misner said he hopes to publish research about Rice's extraordinary procedure in a few months. Rice's story has prompted reaction from wound-care specialists across the country, and he hopes it will lead to more advanced treatments.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

NJ Podiatrist Chose Podiatry Over Olympics

Washington Township graduate Michelle Rowen had record-setting high school and college careers and was named the Girls’ Track Performer of the Century by the Courier-Post in 2000. She was a national champion in high school, then an All-American at the University of Virginia. Rowen qualified for the 1988 U.S. Olympic team in the 1,500, but chose to attend medical school at the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine.

Dr. Michelle Rowen

Today, she is known as Dr. Michelle Rowen, owner of Rowen Podiatry in Glendora. She has had her own practice since 1993 and treats many a former athlete. Rowen was mentored by Dr. Christopher Connor, a local podiatrist. He approached her at a Turnersville Rotary meeting when he saw her limping. “It was a real easy, smooth transition because I already had my role model,” she said of Connor.

UNMATCHED GRADUATE OF THE DAY

I am a 2013 graduate of the Scholl College. There, I received multiple awards and honors for my scholastic and leadership achievements. Before podiatry school, I attended graduate school for economics, where I lectured at the college level. I continued teaching as a tutor of basic biomedical sciences in podiatry school, and I hope to remain within an academic setting throughout residency and my career.

Dr. Nicholas A. Ciotola

I am a diligent worker, an inquisitive student, and a voracious reader, but I love to joke around, too. I speak fluent Spanish. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking and playing piano.

QUERIES (CLINCAL)

Query: Silver as an Anti-Fungal?

Several of my patients are using silver gel or silver solution to treat their tinea pedis and onychomycosis. These people have been refractory to typical topical antifungal treatments, and all have been verified with positive fungal cultures. I have also witnessed an improvement. Has anyone else seen similar results? Is the mechanism of action the same for silver's anti-microbial properties?

RE: Diindolylmethane for Verrucae (Todd Lamster, DPM)
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

I use "DIM" for verrucas. The dosage is 6mg/kg twice daily. There was a study published showing a very high cure rate (greater than 90 percent) in approximately 2.4 - 5 months. There was a recent article on recalcitrant verrucae in Podiatry Today (latest issue) which referenced this. I started recommending it to patients after reading the article, so I can not give any feedback on its effectiveness as I have not yet seen the patients back.

RE: Diagnostic Ultrasound (Bryan Markinson, DPM)
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM

Bryan Markinson states a case of ultrasound abuse which has nothing at all to do with efficacy of guided injections. This simply sounds like an unethical doc. Guided injections have their place in our armamentarium. There is no shortage of journal articles supporting its use. I have found it to be extremely helpful in injection placement and efficacy (although I do not inject cortisone into ligaments, tendons, or joints). Realize that if your injection is not in the right place or the right plane, no amount of "diffusion" is going to get it there. My fellow podiatrists should also know that guided injections are becoming the gold standard in radiology, rheumatology, orthopedics, etc. It should be in podiatry as well. Why rely on hit or miss when you can clearly see where you need to be?

In the same vein, why should we do minimally invasive fluoroscopic or endoscopic procedures? Let's just put the knife in and slash around. We're bound to be right half of the time.

RE: Diagnostic Ultrasound (David E. Gurvis, DPM)
From: Bryan Markinson, DPM

Drs. Gurvis and Foreman take my research idea and interpret that my intention is to prove that ultrasound use is fraudulent or somehow unethical, or even unnecessary. Nothing could be further from the truth. However, I will never be convinced that the majority of current users are adequately trained in musculoskeletal ultrasound in proportion to its frequency of use.

RE: Diagnostic Ultrasound (David Samuel, DPM)
From: Martin Wendelken, DPM,

It is totally clear to me that there are a number of podiatric physicians who do not understand the capabilities of diagnostic ultrasound. For example, 1) there are many patients who have heel pain where the plantar fascia is torn and injection is contraindicated or 2) there is a tendonopathy, where partial tears exists, or 3) there are swellings where a tumor resides. For those who feel that it is only a financial incentive, I need to state that they are misdirected. The instrument is only as effective as the capabilities of the user.

Vet Charged With Treating Human; Patient Loses Toes

A patient had to have several toes removed after police in Greeley say a veterinarian provided medical care to him. Police said Thursday Fran Freemyer, 78, was unauthorized to provide medical treatments to humans but did so for at least one person. He was cited for practicing medicine without a license.

Freemyer works at Eldred Small Animal Hospital. Police Sgt. Susan West said Thursday that the man went to him with a foot ailment and the vet gave him ointment. The problem got worse and he went to a hospital. The patient, whose identity is not being released, had to have surgery to remove three toes.
