Start Exercise Slowly to Prevent Overuse Injuries: MO Podiatrist

Foot doctors have seen many patients eager to start new outdoor activities, only to get sidelined by a condition like plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis, says Kyle Fiala, DPM, a podiatrist with University of Missouri Health Care in Columbia, MO.

Dr. Kyle Fiala

Start slow and work your way up to more time or intensity with exercises like running. If you do get plantar fasciitis, there are calf stretches you can do to help treat it, and there are over-the-counter orthotics that will give your heel better support, Dr. Fiala says.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
OH Podiatrist Supports Public Transportation

The Mahoning Valley’s Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber and Western Reserve Port Authority want to see the Western Reserve Transit Authority expand a permanent public transit system in the county in the interest of economic development and job accessibility. James LaPolla, DPM, a Howland trustee and a podiatrist, said he supports public transportation in both of his roles.

Dr. James LaPolla

“As a physician, I support public transportation. Many of my patients cannot get to the hospital or doctors appointments because they are unable to drive or cannot find someone to drive them to their appropriate appointment. I also think this is a positive mode of transportation to help those that cannot afford transportation,” LaPolla said. “As an elected official, I support any public service that can benefit my constituents in multiple ways. May that be for medical appointments, may that be to get food, may that be to get clothes, I don’t see any negatives expanding WRTA Into Trumbull County, and especially in Howland Township.”

CFAS Expands to St. Petersburg, FL

South Florida’s rapidly growing and award winning podiatry group, Certified Foot and Ankle Specialists, LLC (CFAS) has expanded its practice to the St. Petersburg area through the acquisition of Tampa Bay Sports Medicine Center (TBSMC). Timothy C. Runyon, DPM of TBMSC was recently presented with the Podiatrist of the Year award by the St. Petersburg Times.

(L-R) Drs. Timothy Runyon and Kyle Kinmon

CFAS also recently won the coveted “Practice of the Year” award through the Palm Beach Medical Society for charitable work in its community. “We are looking forward to expanding our comprehensive, multi-specialty lower extremity model into the Bay Area so that its patients may finally have a "one stop shop" for any pain or ailment below the knee,” according to Kyle Kinmon, DPM, CEO of CFAS.

REMEMBERING HISTORIC PODIATRISTS
Local Artists Seek Statue to Honor TX Podiatrist

Local Wichita Falls artists gathered on the site of what was once The Isis Theater on the East Side, to bring awareness and inspiration to its residents, through art. The Isis Theater was built back in the 1950s by a podiatrist Dr. Anne Elizabeth Davis Roark, to bring not only movies but African-American artistry to the East Side. The Wichita Falls Historical Commission has already worked to provide a plaque on The Isis Theater describing Dr. Roark’s legacy but residents still want to see more.

Dr. Anne Roark

“I read about her and The Isis Theater and I was astounded and I was like I want more stories about all of Wichita Falls not just a small group.” said Jessica Odom an MSU Texas student and artist. Jessica along with Kylie Shayne, another artist who was also at the site, hope to continue to work with The Wichita Falls Historical Commission to eventually get a statue of Dr. Roark placed on the grounds of the theater.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Big Mistakes To Avoid When Creating A Press Release - Part 7

Press releases are a vital part of a practices' communication strategy. Despite their importance, many offices make mistakes when it comes to creating or issuing these messages. Writing press releases is a skill that many people like to think they have, but the reality is that it’s harder than it looks.

7. Poor Timing  -Timing is crucial for press release success, especially in today's turbulent times. While Tuesdays to Thursdays are generally the best days for press releases, with national protests these past weeks, the narrative has changed. When in doubt, don't release. It's important to take time to see how your news fits into the greater community conversation — you may risk negative press if the timing is poor. - Evan Nison, NisonCo

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Sea Urchin Injury

My daughter’s friend thinks she stepped on a sea urchin yesterday. I met her in the office today to exam her foot. She had several “spines” around her heel and 5th MPJ. Slight pain was noted around the MPJ area, but was improving. Some redness is noted but no temperature increase or red streaking is noted. She soaked her foot in vinegar for several hours. She did get a prescription from another friend’s father for Cipro. She is allergic to penicillin. The spines, as pictured below, are the diameter of a hair.

Sea urchin injury

I tried removing some of them but they are very fragile and break into smaller fragments. I didn’t want to anesthetize the multiple areas to remove them because I felt it would do more harm than good. I instructed her to get a tetanus shot if she is due and to take the Cipro as prescribed. I’m not sure if the small spines need to be removed. If anyone has experience with this, your input would be appreciated.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Donick. I knew Dr. Donick as a gentle, humble giant in our profession. As Dr. Jacobs so eloquently noted, he was an icon in our profession (Like Drs. Berlin, Clarke, Kanat, Kaplan, McGlamry, and Yu). He made a difference in all of the lives that he touched. He was “old school!” He was trained in the days when podiatry was still fighting to be recognized and respected (and still is!) as a surgical specialty. His residency training taught him “to give back to the profession and make it better,” and boy did he ever make a difference!

Dr. Donick was the student who became the mentor and teacher to those he trained. He is the role model that all of us should emulate. Unfortunately, in today’s world, our residents are NOT being taught to give back to the profession nor make it better. As important, they MUST get involved to make a difference for the profession to continue to grow and evolve, just as Dr. Donick did. RIP, Dr. Donick, job well done!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B

RE: The Passing of Irv Donick, DPM (Allen Jacobs, DPM)

Farewell to a giant. There are thousands who should say thanks to this man. He shared his knowledge, compassion, and insight with over one hundred residents. These people applied his knowledge of podiatry, ability to relate to others, and compassion to improve the lives of thousands of patients on a daily basis. He will be missed by his tremendous family and the fraternity of podiatrists.
