CT Podiatrist Discusses Ways to Reduce Amputation in Diabetics
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes account for non-traumatic lower-limb amputation cases by 60 percent. This has been revealed in the 2014 National Diabetes Statistics Report. Chris P. Kassaris, DPM, a podiatrist at Associated Podiatrists of Greenwich and member of the American Podiatric Medical Association, suggests that individuals suffering from diabetes may significantly reduce their risk of amputations by simply discussing their condition with a podiatrist.
|
|
Dr. Chris Kassaris |
"There are ways to reduce such a risk like practicing a regular foot care regimen. This allows sufferers to see if problems are taking place and stop them from getting severe. They should inspect their feet every day and look for cuts, bruises, toenail discoloration, or sores in their feet. When they suffer from a wound, it is imperative that they consult their podiatrist before an infection even starts to develop," says Dr. Kassaris.

Maryland Will Allow Podiatrists to Certify Patients as Eligible to Receive Marijuana
A Maryland commission on Monday named the top applicants in line to become growers and processors of marijuana under the state’s medical marijuana program, if they win final approval after financial due diligence and background checks.
Maryland’s medical marijuana law takes a broad approach to access. It can be made available for any condition that is severe enough in which other medical treatments have been ineffective, and if the symptoms “reasonably can be expected to be relieved” by marijuana. Maryland also will allow not only physicians, but nurse practitioners, dentists, podiatrists, and nurse midwives to certify patients as eligible to receive marijuana.

NV Podiatrist Returns Home to Expand Practice
Coming home. That's how Victoria Melhuish, DPM sees her practice's expansion to the Nevada state capital. Dr. Melhuish is a long-time Carson City resident, who has practiced podiatry and specialized orthopedics in the Carson Valley for more than 20 years while living in the capital city. She opened her own practice, Sierra Foot and Ankle, in Gardnerville 16 years ago.

"I started my clinic in Gardnerville, because that's where I started working for other entities," Dr. Melhuish said. "But I have always lived in Carson City." When the board-certified podiatric surgeon decided to expand her practice this year, she knew she wanted to invest in something much closer to home. "I wanted to expand the practice, and I knew the way to expand it was in Carson City," Dr. Melhuish said. "There is going to be a lot of growth, and Carson's the anchor. I also wanted to work close to home."

Soccer Star Credits Improved Performance to Aussie Podiatrist
For soccer and football players, the importance of looking after your feet before, during, and post-season is crucial in ensuring an injury-free season, according to Toowoomba podiatrist Anne-Maree Hanrick. This is one reason former Toowoomba Grammar School student and soccer star Nykodah Smith, 17, has been able to continue to shine on and off the field.
|

Nykodah Smith and Anne-Maree Hanrick |
Smith was an 'accidental patient' but the benefits of regularly seeing a podiatrist for injury prevention has worked for him. "The orthotics have straightened my running and I feel so much faster; and as a striker, this combination (getting faster and orthotics) has balanced out my game even more," says Smith.

Aussie Podiatrist Discusses Importance of Proper Running Shoes
Protecting your feet by choosing quality, comfortable footwear can have long-term benefits on top of the more short-term personal best, a fact that Erin Todd, a sports podiatrist at Sydney East Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics (SESMO), would agree with. "As a runner, the most important equipment you have is your running shoes," she says.
|
|
Erin Todd |
"Wearing the correct shoe can make running a lot more comfortable and enjoyable, and if you get your shoe choice wrong, it can lead to the risk of injury and pain. Each individual running shoe will support a different foot type. Correct fitting and the right shoe type for you is key."

SC Podiatrist Faces Prison Time for Drug Trafficking
Dr. Mackie J. Walker of Aiken, a podiatrist, pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to being the key figure in a major South Carolina oxycodone drug trafficking ring. 8 Patient Collection Mistakes to Avoid - Part 2
Medical practices are caught in the crosshairs when it comes to collecting patient co-pays and deductibles. On one hand, they are obligated by their contracts with payers to collect patient cost-sharing amounts, on the other, patients are being faced with unprecedented medical bills. If you are caught in this collection free-for-all, here are the eight worst things you can do.
2. "What a number of practices do, if they set up a payment plan, is they call [the patient] each month to get the credit card information. Talk about a waste of time, trying to connect with the patient." - Jeff Wood

I believe Dr. Hecht is correct. There's really nothing to "prepare for" at this point. Anyone already playing the MU/PQRS game now should be fine, as MIPS will be a bit more streamlined, if you believe the pundits. Since nothing has been released yet, how would preparation begin? Maybe we all just start to bite our nails and pace around the office at lunch every day until someone notices little beads of sweat on our brow.
If "preparation" means buying an EHR for the first time, or god-forbid, buying another one because the one you have is evil and stupid, DON'T. Want an EHR for Meaningless Use? Get the free one and be done. It won't be any worse than...

Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG) face a challenging pathway in order to practice medicine in the United States, even more so if they wish to practice a surgical specialty. All must satisfactorily pass the USMLE exams and obtain an accredited residency program (where shortages are also found). Most, even if successful in obtaining a residency program, will find they will be eligible for family practice or another non-surgical training program only.
Podiatric medicine offers a unique and preferred pathway, therefore conferring upon DPM-residency-trained FMGs, a surgical credential that rewards their many years of training. At NYCPM, an FMG may be accepted into our program contingent upon successfully passing USMLE Step 1. These students prove themselves highly competitive academically, and bring expertise and depth to their clinical training that supports not only College clerkship activity, but the residency programs they subsequently enter.

RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day
Allbirds' debut sneaker, the $95 "Wool Runner," has been called the world's most comfortable shoe by venture capitalists and startup founders — as well as the company itself. Allbirds is becoming a ubiquitous brand throughout Silicon Valley, as evidenced by the company's ability to raise a $2.2 million seed round of funding.

Their sneakers could become a quintessential part of the venture capitalist dress code, in the same way that a hoodie and t-shirt currently make up the "startup uniform."
