IL Podiatrist Provides Back-to-School Shoe-Buying Advice

Dr. Kimberly Eickmeier, a podiatrist at Christie Clinic, says shoes that don’t fit and support properly can aggravate your child’s feet and lead to a host of problems: heel pain that might make PE and sports too painful, ingrown toenails and shin splints. She and fellow podiatrists advise the following as you do your back-to-school shoe-shopping: Look for shoes with stiff heels, toe flexibility (meaning the shoes bend with your child’s toes) with a rigid middle.

Dr. Kimberly Eickmeier

Podiatrists further advise no hand-me-downs when it comes to shoes. Not only can you spread foot fungus from one child to the next that way, Eickmeier says, you can actually pass along foot problems from one child to the next. For example, a flatfoot deformity of the first child means that child will wear down the shoe unevenly, so the next child won’t have the correct support and can wind up with arch pain or tendonitis, she said.

Canadian Students Complete Four-Month Clinical Rotation at NYCPM

Eight Canadian podiatric medical students from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) recently completed a four-month clinical rotation at NYCPM’s clinical affiliate, Foot Center of New York, and at its affiliated hospitals.

(Rear Row) Canadian podiatric medical students.(Front row, L-R): Robert A. Eckles, DPM, Dean of Clinical Education & Graduate Medical Education; Louis L. Levine, President & CEO of NYCPM; Michael J. Trepal, DPM, VP for Academic Affairs & Dean; and Laurence J. Lowy, Dean for Student Services.

The clinical rotation, which has proven to be mutually beneficial to both institutions, is part of UQTR’s program in podiatric medicine, which was founded in late 2003 through the efforts of an NYCPM graduate, Dr. François Allart, in cooperation with the faculty and administration at NYCPM. The UQTR program is the first DPM program in Canada, as well as the first French-speaking DPM program in the world.

NJ Podiatrist Blames Verizon Strike For Lack Of Business

Fran Cohen says her husband, Dr. Marc Cohen, has seen his podiatry practice in Marlboro, New Jersey grind to a halt since Monday, when callers received a message that their phone lines had been disconnected. Cohen says the problem began when they had scheduled work to be done, but received a message from Verizon that it could not be completed due to the work stoppage.

Dr. Marc Cohen

“We see about 75 patients a day on a Monday and we have an extremely busy phone because he’s a diabetic wound care specialist and podiatric surgeon,” Cohen told WCBS 880 reporter Monica Miller. “We take appointments on an emergency basis every day, and we’re missing out on all of that.”

What is the prevailing thought on wages for a podiatrist hired into a practice? Should wages be based on a percentage of that generated by said podiatrist or should there be an hourly rate?

RE: ESWT & NSAIDs (Paul Busman, DPM)
From: David Zuckerman, DPM

I believe the reason that there is a stoppage of NSAIDs for ESWL is for bleeding fears. ESWT is used for neo-vascularzation and not for the crushing or destruction of kidney stones.

I believe we should try to follow the wound healing phases, especially the inflammation phases of wound healing which can range up to 21 days. Typically it is 14 days. There are always going to be exceptions to this rule. I still will use NSAIDs if I feel it's in the best interest of the patient.

RE: Digital X-Ray Company That Supports Podiatry (Cosimo Riccardi, DPM)
From: Kenneth Meisler, DPM

X-rays, whether digital or conventional, are one of the most important parts of a podiatry practice. Purchasing from a company that supports podiatry is a very good idea, however, do not sacrifice quality of image in order to do that. You need the best possible image that your practice can afford.

20/20 Imaging fits both criteria. Their digital x-ray systems are excellent and, in my opinion, produce the type of image quality you need to practice podiatry today. In the past 10 years, since they introduced the first digital system dedicated to podiatry, they have been exhibitors and/or sponsors while attending APMA, ACFAS, NYSPMA, Midwest, Western, FPMA, and AAPPM meetings. They re-invest in the future of imaging in podiatry by offering their fourth generation of digital solutions. Their systems are installed at many of the podiatry colleges, providing students with cutting edge technology.

Disclosure: I am a digital Imaging consultant for 20/20 Imaging

RE: Doughnut Tourniquet (Scott Shields, DPM)
From: Charles Morelli DPM

In lieu of a high tech, over-priced "doughnut tourniquet", may I suggest that you consider a simple latex finger cot. Simply tear the tip off and roll it on the toe. You can buy them in large quantity, and a box of 1,500 will cost you no more that $20.00. No, they are not sterile but, for me, that has never been an issue. After I apply the tourniquet, it is then that I will clean and prep the toe for a nail procedure. If the hemostasis is not sufficient, then simply grab it with a curved stat and make it a bit tighter. Just don't forget to remove it after the procedure.

RE: Legality of Maximalist Running Shoes (Robert Bijak, DPM)
From: Steven King, DPM

Podiatrists and pedorthists are called upon to develop technologies that reduce the incidence of injuries while improving athletic results. Our profession should take a closer look at Rule 143 of the U.S. Association of Track and Field. According to the  USATF 2011 rules: "NOTE: Orthotic inserts required for medical purposes are exempt from this rule."
