Feet Need to be Inspected for Any Skin Changes : NY Podiatrist

Skin cancer can strike anywhere, but many people forget to slather on sunscreen below the ankle. Always use an SPF of 30 on all exposed skin. New York podiatrist Dr. Oliver Zong also suggests doing regular feet self-exams for suspicious moles or markings.

Dr. Oliver Zong

“Malignant melanoma of the lower extremities usually occurs on the soles of the feet, in the spaces between the toes, and in the areas around the nails,” he says. If you detect any changes to a mole or skin lesion, see your doctor as soon as possible.

Inaugural ACFAOM 2008 a Success!

The first Annual Clinical Conference of the American College of Foot & Ankle Orthopedics & Medicine (ACFAOM) in Orlando (Aug 14-17) saw 140 DPMs taking advantage of clinical and practical tracks on wound management, imaging, pediatrics, and sports medicine, with 20-minute plenary presentations and complementary “hands-on” workshops by a faculty of 24 top experts.

Warren Joseph, DPM, kicked off ACFAOM 2008 on Thursday, August 14, with a keynote address "Whither Vancomycin: An Update on MRSA."

Other breakout sessions included a punch biopsy and plastic surgery workshop, two reimbursement workshops associated with the clinical content in the plenary sessions, research paper presentations, and a session on electronic medical records. 27 CME credits were available, and the scientific exhibition, featuring 37 companies, rounded out a very successful first annual clinical conference.

ACFAOM 2009 will be held at the same venue, the Buena Vista Palace Hotel & Spa, across from Downtown Disney, July 9-12, 2009.

IN THE COURTS

California Courts to Sort Out Balance-Billing Issues

Disagreements over the scope of a California law regulating balance billing have fueled an ongoing legal fight that has physicians demanding more accountability from health insurers they say routinely underpay for non-contracted care.

In the latest feud, state insurance regulators sued Prime Healthcare Services to stop the hospital system from billing patients for out-of-network emergency care costs not covered by health plans. The lawsuit, filed in June, comes amid confusion over a state law that generally bans the practice for contracted care but is less clear when it comes to non-contracted services. In a separate case, the state Supreme Court is poised to clarify the issue, as physicians, insurance regulators and health plans weigh in on opposing sides.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Keeping Track Of Your Patients

If you are using a schedule book (not computerized) highlight your patients in yellow when they arrive for their appointments. This will allow you to identify your missing patients almost immediately and enable you to contact patients within the first half hour.

When your patient checks out, write in the next appointment next to his or her name in the schedule book. You will quickly be able to identify a patient who does not have another appointment. In other words, some action must be taken.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)

Query: Studies Establishing Medical Necessity of Custom-Made Orthotics

Can someone suggest some current literature to substantiate to insurance companies the medical necessity of custom made orthotics vs. pre-fabricated shoe inserts? Some companies say that according to the ODG (Official Disability Guidelines), there is no scientific evidence that custom-made orthotics are more effective than over-the-counter pre-fab insoles.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (CLINICAL)

RE: Evenup (Brad Castellano, DPM)
From: Michael Lawrence, DPM

When I first saw the "Evenup" device a couple of months back, I simply exclaimed "brilliant." My second thought was why hadn't I thought of it. How many times do we unintentionally create a functional limb-length discrepancy by placing our patients in a Darco shoe, cast boot, Bledsoe- type boot, etc. with the incumbent symptomatic problems.

The Evenup at least allows for minimizing the difference, therefore the associated problems. Patients understand the need and these devices are accepted very well. Count me a big fan! It's the best thing since Dr. Darby came up with his shoe!
