Avoid Going Barefoot in Airports and on Planes: CA Podiatrist
Even before the pandemic, Ebonie Vincent, DPM, podiatrist and star of the TLC series My Feet Are Killing Me, was concerned with the health risks of people going barefoot while traveling. "I would love to give out information packets to these people so they can understand the potential consequences to walking barefoot in the airport or planes," Vincent said in an email in February. Dr. Vincent says that walking barefoot through public places like airport security can expose travelers to bacteria and viruses that can cause infections or warts.
|
Dr. Ebonie Vincent |
If you want to wear flip-flops or sandals and don't have TSA PreCheck (which allows travelers to keep their shoes on throughout the screening), Vincent recommends bringing a pair of socks to wear instead of going barefoot through security. For the people going barefoot because their feet swell on planes, Vincent recommends wearing a pair of compression socks and closed-toe shoes throughout your flight.

Don't Wait Until Your Ingrown Toenail Becomes Infected: CT Podiatrist
"Preventive care is really important" for people with diabetes, Marcella MacDonald, DPM says. "I have some patients who come in with infected, ingrown toenails or other problems with their feet, and they don't event feel it. So that's why it's really important to keep an eye on their feet."
|
Dr. Marcella MacDonald |
If your ingrown toenail has become infected, it's time to see your general practitioner or a podiatrist. "Don't wait until it gets red and oozing pus," Dr. MacDonald, says. "When it starts getting pink and it's tender to the touch, find a podiatrist." She also notes, "you don't have to go to the emergency room for an ingrown toenail." Rather, your podiatrist can usually take care of this common problem during a normal office visit.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Big Mistakes To Avoid When Creating A Press Release - Part 5
Press releases are a vital part of a practice's communication strategy. Despite their importance, many offices make mistakes when it comes to creating or issuing these messages. Writing press releases is a skill that many people like to think they have, but the reality is that it’s harder than it looks.
5. Losing Sight Of SEO And Keyword Goals
In the rush to get news published, teams may lose sight of their search engine optimization and keyword goals. While there's an art to crafting headlines that are compelling and clickable, remember to align with your audience's search habits to ensure the right people receive the message to make the most impact. - Sarah Bird, Moz

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
From: John Chisholm DPM
Why not now, indeed. No one is more qualified to evaluate podiatric medical education and training than the great Leonard Levy, and the finding of the California Podiatric Medical Association's Physician and Surgeon's Task Force mirrored those of Dr. Levy - our education and training are comparable to that of our MD and DO colleagues at the end of our 3-year residency programs. The final product is indistinguishable, except for our limited licensure vs. the plenary license given to MD/DOs. The problem isn't that we have the wrong degree. The problem is that our limited license doesn't accurately reflect what we do.
CPMA believes there is another, better way to achieve true parity - to convert our present, limited license to an unlimited, plenary license. In other words, DPM=MD=DO. This is the simplest and easiest way to achieve our goal. It eliminates the need for a degree change. Our education and training is comparable to that of MD and DO physicians. We should be licensed as such. Why not now?
John Chisholm DPM, Chula Vista, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
From: Samuel Mendicino, DPM
With respect, everyone is right. Look, we have tried to create a 3-year residency for all. But my only question is why not be double-boarded? Then this issue goes away.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) PART 1A |
Irv Donick was an icon and pioneer in the podiatric profession for over 50 years. He started the first podiatric residency program in Maryland, established participation of podiatrists in Blue Shield and many other Insurance companies in the state, and paved the way for podiatry to be integrated into all facets of hospitals and clinics throughout the state. He taught us the skills to treat patients both medically and surgically. He was unique in that he also gave his residents the ability to navigate the business of podiatry by creating an office-based practice for us, as we established our podiatry skills.
His efforts gave many podiatrists the opportunity to excel in our field. He trained and taught hundreds of residents, interns, and students throughout his career. He was honored by the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and inducted into the Hall of Fame at the college. He was the director of my residency program in Baltimore, my mentor, my partner, and most significantly, my lifetime friend. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace my dear friend.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B |
RE: The Passing of Irv Donick, DPM
Irv Donick was a leader of his generation. Reading with interest the well deserved tributes sent to PM News regarding him, I am reminded of Dr. Earl Kaplan. Many years ago, former APMA president Theodore Clark stated, "Earl Kaplan took this profession from the nail groove to the sinus tarsi." It was Dr. Kaplan’s wish that his residents would lead in building and leading the profession. He expressed that final thought to each graduating resident. Sadly, that generation is inexorably passing. They helped advance this profession. They built residencies, the ACFAS, the APMA, and PPAC.
The generation of Kaplan, Donick, Berlin, Kanat, and many of Dr. Kaplan’s residents completed his mission of advancing podiatry education. Today’s hospital privileges, residencies, and indeed the profession generally, was in no small way the result of the tireless work of men such as Dr. Donick and others trained by and assigned this mission by Dr. Kaplan. These were selfless podiatry dedicated people. The profession and its growth were first and foremost. Dr. Donick was part of the vision. We would benefit from similar unselfish leadership today. Rest In Peace Irv. Your mission was accomplished.
Allen Jacobs, DPM, St Louis, MO

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1C |
RE: The Passing of Irv Donick, DPM
I was saddened to read of the passing of my classmate Irvin Donick. Irv was an icon in our profession as well as a friend. We last met each other at our 50th class reunion and shared memories as to how each of us came to this beautiful country at the age of 10 and were able to accomplish our "dream." The ranks are getting thinner, but the memories endure. My condolences to Barbara and the entire family
Edward R. Nieuwenhuis Sr., DPM, Wanaque, NJ
I echo Steve Berlin’s tribute to Irv Donick and appreciate that I knew him and benefitted from his friendship and mentoring. He was a quiet giant in the profession and a really nice guy.
Bill FitzPatrick, DPM, Albuquerque, NM
