Teens Need to be Educated on Foot Health: MI Podiatrist

Feet are out of sight, out of mind. Yet, foot health plays an important role in overall health and wellness. Teens, especially girls, tend to care about having attractive feet versus healthy feet. “While most individuals tend to react to foot issues later in life, the time to begin a good foot care routine is actually in the teenage years,” said Jodie Sengstock, DPM, a Garden City Hospital podiatrist and director of professional relations, Michigan Podiatric Medical Association.
Dr. Jodie Sengstock

“Only about half of teens believe that feet are important to their overall health and many are living with foot pain. It’s vital that we educate teens on how to properly care for their feet and that local podiatrists are readily available to help relieve pain and avoid long-term complications.”

GA Podiatrists Complete 10th Mission to El Salvador

Georgia’s Ankle and Foot Centers physicians recently completed their 10th annual medical and surgical campaign to El Salvador. San Francisco Gotera is one of El Salvador’s most impoverished and underserved regions of Central America. In conjunction with the Ministry of Health and Dr. Salvador Perez, the hospital’s director, Dr. Joseph Giovinco and his partner Dr. Gregory Alvarez led a combined team of American and El Salvadorian healthcare providers. Together, they performed 26 surgical procedures and provided clinical care and evaluation to over 150 patients.

(L-R) Drs. Gregory Alverez and Joseph Giovinco, Karina Vladescu RN, Alex Alvarez, and Dr. Nicholas Giovinco

For the last 10 years, these campaigns have provided surgical equipment and skill for the correction of clubfoot, trauma, polio deformities, and a variety of pediatric ailments. “This mission is very important for the future of these children,” says the mission’s founder, Dr. Joseph Giovinco. “The two core principles of the International Institute for Foot and Ankle Surgery are to provide modern clinical and surgical treatment for those in need as well as to educate local healthcare professionals in these techniques.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Irish Podiatrist Uses 3-D Technology to Manufacture Orthotics

Podiatrist  Martin McGeough doesn't just advise and treat. He has built a healthy business selling custom-made foot and ankle orthoses to patients and podiatrists in Ireland and Britain, where his customers include professional sports clubs and athletes. McGeough established Firefly Orthoses in 2003, and employs 20 people between the company's headquarters in Sligo town and clinics in Dublin, Cork, and Belfast. He works with four U.S. manufacturers to make the devices, but is looking at using 3-D printing technology to bring manufacturing in-house, with the potential to create further Irish jobs.

Martin McGeough

McGeough is looking at increasing Firefly's retail footprint, and is in talks with an established orthotics chain with a view to establishing a high street partnership. The move would give McGeough immediate access to a branch network in Ireland and Britain, where he estimates Firefly already derives 90 per cent of its revenues. Among Firefly's existing clinic patients, McGeough uses orthotics to treat common foot complaints, lower limb conditions, and spinal problems.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
10 Strategies for Protecting Patient Data - Part 1

With cyber criminals actively targeting healthcare, Rick Kam, president and co-founder of security firm ID Experts, argues that the threats to protected health information have never been greater. As chair of the PHI Protection Network, a collaboration of vendors working to expedite adoption of PHI best practices, Kam also believes there are some critical strategies healthcare organizations can employ for protecting patient information. The best place to start, he says, is with a risk assessment that serves as an inventory of where an organization’s patient information lies within and outside of the organization. But 10 other steps are just as necessary.

1. Demand Practce Leadership Engagement: Workforce training and safeguards alone will not be effective. Leadership must embrace and champion compliance as it would any other component of the practice's value chain. Leadership must visibly and actively foster a culture of compliance throughout the practice by setting expectations and holding all employees accountable to the same standards.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Proposed Changes to Maryland CME Requirements
From: Barbara Hirsch, DPM

There is a proposed change to the CME requirements for Maryland that I am concerned about. I feel this is taking a BIG step backwards. It will increase the cost of obtaining CME and limit my choices and options. Present Podiatry CME will NOT be allowed because their courses are less than one hour. CME from Podiatry Management Magazine will be limited to 25 credits instead of the 50 now allowed.

Please respond with your opinions AND contact the Maryland Regulation office with your comments:

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
RE: Beware of PBS Scam

I just had a very intriguing and convincing phone call with the senior producer of In America, “Mr. Patrick". He claimed to be interviewing a few podiatry practices in several regions of the U.S. and that we just happened to be a leading candidate. I had reviewed several videos on their website and they have some big names associated with them, including George Bush, Colin Powell, former surgeon general, and more. Who wouldn’t love to be associated with James Earl Jones? As far as I could tell, it appeared to be a legitimate operation and I was excited to be offered the opportunity to participate and serve the community.

The “opportunity” turned out to be that they would shoot and produce a 4-5 minute segment on diabetic foot care as an educational segment that would be featured on “Public Television” between their main shows, as a filler piece. They would also produce a 1-minute marketing segment and a 5-7 minute documentary on our practice so that we could use it for our own marketing purposes. They would also feature the 1-minute segment 50 times on TV to promote the educational special and would mention our practice...all as a thank-you for participating in the programing. They asked that we just cover their production costs and travel expenses of $23,000 & $3,000. This would be a bargain if you consider how expensive TV advertising on a major station is.

However, as with any investment of that magnitude, or a deal that seems “too good to be true”, I decided to do some digging. I found the following surprising revelationWhile the production company is not explicitly breaking the law, they are deceptive by insinuating their association with PBS and their marketing ability.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM

Knowing these facts, I suggest that anyone who wants to be a foot and ankle surgeon should look at this AOFAS document and tell me why we are undervalued as "premier foot and ankle surgeons."

And from the APMA: "Podiatrists, podiatric physicians, and podiatric surgeons are all terms used to describe doctors of podiatric medicine (DPMs). All are uniquely qualified among medical professionals to treat...
