ROCKY MOUNTAIN ORTHOTICS LAB JOINS AETREX iSTEP EVOLUTION RX PROGRAM

Aetrex Worldwide, Inc. is pleased to announce that Rocky Mountain Orthotics Lab, Inc., (RMOL) one of the largest and most technologically advanced custom orthotics labs in the nation, has joined Aetrex’s iStep Evolution-Rx Program as a participating manufacturer of custom orthotics.

Aetrex’s iStep technology works by capturing each individual’s foot size, foot type and pressure points. The program then creates a three dimensional view of the foot which is sent electronically to RMOL, who then manufacture the individually customized and comfortably fitted orthotics - without the need for messy and bulky plaster casts. The iStep will also recommend the ideal footwear and off-the-shelf orthotic solutions which can then be immediately ordered from the Evolution kiosk. Doctors can enroll in the Evolution program by contacting Aetrex at 800-526-2739 or Rocky Mountain Orthotics Lab, Inc. at 800-968-7665.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS

MA Podiatrist Sees a High Percentage of Warts at Summer’s End

Chelmsford, MA podiatrist Victor Quijano sees a rash of summertime foot problems -- from warts to athlete's foot and foreign bodies embedded in tender foot flesh -- the result of going barefoot, some of which ultimately require medical intervention. "We see a high propensity for warts toward the end of summer," said Quijano. "The virus is all over the place -- pools are a big culprit, as are big water parks that draw a lot of people."

Dr. Victor Quijano

Size matters, too. Shoes that are too tight may cause contractions of the toe and even ingrown toenails that may need to be surgically removed. Footwear that's too big, alternately, forces the foot to slide around, causing risk of hammertoes and blisters. And because many kids have limited exposure to pain, and often don't complain, it's up to parents to keep an eye cast to the ground.

"Your child's foot can grow at a considerable rate," Quijano said, "and as they start to don their sportswear, their dress shoes, be mindful of their activity level. If there's a decline in activity, that's something that needs to be addressed, something that could be coming from the shoe and abnormal foot function."

Untreated Flat Feet Can Result in Later Disability: Temple Podiatrist

One in five kids have flat feet, which can lead to serious ailments but are much easier to correct in childhood than later. Foot arches develop by age 10 for most kids. But some are born without cooperative bone and ligament structures, others suffer foot injuries, and excessive weight helps keep the arches flat for an increasing proportion. Doctors should check for flat feet at a before-school physical, recommended Temple University podiatrist Kieran T. Mahan.

Dr. Kieran T. Mahan

Otherwise, he said fallen arches can cause foot and ankle pain, night cramps, pain when walking or lower back and knee pain. The pain can lead to inactivity and weight gain, which would exacerbate flat feet.

Most children's flat feet can be corrected with orthotics — shoe inserts designed to support the arch, relieve pain and correct abnormal walking patterns that can lead later in life to lower-back or knee damage. But uncorrected flat feet, said Mahan, can progressively worsen into adulthood "and can create a disability."

APMA ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING NEWS

Study Finds Lower-Limb Injuries Plague U.S. Soldiers in Iraq

A study released in conjunction with the American Podiatric Medical Association's (APMA) 95th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia reveals nearly 68 percent of all U.S. soldiers wounded in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts are a result of extremity injuries and nearly 22 percent of those injuries involve the foot and/or ankle. To meet the war's demands of lower-limb injuries, podiatric physicians are on the surgical front lines for the first time ever. No longer relegated to non-critical cases, podiatric physicians have seen their role expanded to match their medical and surgical training.

Army Lt. Col. Michael Neary, a podiatric physician and surgeon stationed at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) in Germany, conducted the study reviewing 42 months of retrospective records of U.S. troops admitted to the podiatric service unit at LRMC. After assessing more than 350 patient records from March 2003 to September 2006, Neary concluded that podiatric physicians were critical to the overall LRMC medical mission. LRMC is the only U.S. military medical facility outside the United States to treat severely injured American soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The study's findings confirm the fundamental role that podiatric physicians are playing in the ongoing conflicts," said Neary, originally from Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. "This study was a way to validate podiatrists' role in the war and educate civilians and the U.S. Army about the extent of injuries the podiatric staff is seeing and treating."

Query: Replacement Drug for Mintezol

I recently saw a patient whom I suspect of having cutaneous larva migrans. I wrote for Mintezol, which used to be the drug of choice, only to learn it has been taken off the market. Does anyone know what drug has replaced it for suspected helmitic infections?

RE: Cosmetic Solution For Hyperpigmentation (Howard J. Bonenberger, DPM)
From: Mathew M. John, DPM, Jacqueline Sutera, DPM

I have prescribed hydroquinone 4% cream for many of my patients who have hyperpigmentation problems. It is available in a gel and some versions have a sunscreen as well. It typically takes at least three months of use to see a fading of the hyperpigmentation.

Mathew M. John, DPM, Marietta, GA, rajan1999@hotmail.com

There are a lot of products out there to cover up blemishes but for large darker pigmented lesions you need a heavy-duty product. A really good one for body blemishes is by a company called Dermablend. It can be found in larger department store makeup counters, online, and in some beauty supply stores. This will be perfect for your patient because it's waterproof.
