OH Podiatrist Sentenced for Enticing Minors to Send Sexually Explicit Videos
A 33-year-old man who was working as a podiatrist at an Adams County hospital when he enticed minors online to send him sexually explicit videos of themselves has been sentenced to a year in prison. Hayden Wolford, 33, lost his job at Adams County Regional Medical Center in August 2023, the same day investigators interviewed him at the hospital and searched his home, Wolford's attorney, Brandon Moermond, said in court documents. PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Preventing a Malpractice Claim Before the Patient Arrives
By the time a patient sets foot in your waiting room, many malpractice risks have already been set in motion or avoided. From your online presence to your appointment scheduling process, preventive steps taken before the first visit can help minimize legal exposure and protect your reputation. Here are nine ways to get ahead of potential trouble.
3. Use accurate and up-to-date consent forms for telehealth
Telemedicine visits have unique consent requirements that vary by state. Before a virtual appointment, patients should receive — and acknowledge — a consent form that outlines limitations, privacy considerations, and emergency protocols. This step helps ensure compliance with regulations while also reinforcing trust, as Physicians Practice notes.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Alan Shaw, DPM (Gary Dorfman, DPM)
When I heard about Alan’s passing, it gave me great pause. Our relationship goes back to CCPM and then he followed as a resident at Highland hospital in Oakland California. We kept in touch over the years and he was planning to stay with us in Sun Valley and fish Silver Creek with me on his way to visit his kids and grandchildren on the West Coast in September.
Sure, he was a wonderful physician and surgeon, but more importantly, Alan was a mensch. A good man in every respect. He died doing what he loved and that was fly fishing the rivers of Montana. To his wife Marilyn, adult kids, grandchildren, and all that had the gift of knowing him: May Alan’s memory be a blessing.
Alan was a podiatric Teddy Roosevelt. While he was one of the most driven and motivated professionals, his passion was always for America’s public lands and waters, and the experiences they afforded everyone. He spent decades committed to their preservation and working to improve the lives of the communities closest to them. He devoted countless volunteer hours with the Sierra Club, served on the Yellowstone Association board which focuses on the preservation and education of Yellowstone National Park, was a driving force behind the Upper Missouri Watershed Alliance’s mission, chaired the Fort Smith Water and Sewer District, and was a tremendous partner to the Bighorn River Alliance and tribal communities. RIP my friend.

QUERIES (CLINICAL) |
Query: Infection Post-Repair of Ruptured Achilles Tendon
A 69 year old female with a PMH of RA ruptured her tibialis anterior tendon at the insertion. She takes methotrexate, plaquenil, and sulfasalazine, along with monthly Orencia infusions, but has held off on the infusions since her surgery 4 months ago. Repair was performed with Arthrex suture tape, anchoring it with a bioabsorbable Swivelock anchor. This was reinforced with a Wright GraftJacket wrap since the tendon was quite damaged. Unfortunately, she has developed a draining 2mm sinus tract at the incision and presumably has infection within either the graft, the suture, or both.
X-rays do not show any concern for bone erosion. Cultures have grown staph hominis and she has been on appropriate IV antibiotics directed by ID for 6 weeks with no resolution. I was contemplating doing a limited debridement of the sinus tract and an adjacent graft or visible suture fibers, possibly dropping some Vanco powder there in an attempt to eradicate this infection. I know there is no way to remove the entire graft and suture without compromising the tendon and giving her drop foot. I did a long Krackow suture to secure it, which is deeply buried within the tendon and bone anchor. She has minimal pain, is active, and is walking about 7 miles/day for exercise. I am just trying to do anything to avoid sacrificing the tendon and would appreciate any advice.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Butterfly vs. Clarius Portable Ultrasound Machines
I am deciding between the Butterfly and Clarius portable ultrasound machines. I would appreciate feedback from any users of these particular brands. I have researched the pros, cons, and pricing of both and they are similar. I am now relying on actual user experience.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) |
From: Ivar Roth, DPM, David Secord, DPM
As a concierge/direct pay podiatrist, if I cannot get rid of the patient's warts after 5 paid visits, I will treat for free until the warts are gone. Sometimes, I will need to see the patient for up to 10 visits but as far as I know, we are always successful. I will use many combinations of treatments to resolve a wart problem. Persistence does pay off.
Ivar Roth, DPM, Newport Beach, CA
I got a good laugh out of the response from Dr. Taylor. I’m going to assume that he has never done either the Bleomycin or Panacos procedure. I can assure you that he has never visited my office or seen the data I’ve collected on my usage of the Bleomycin or Panacos procedures.
David Secord, DPM, San Juan, TX

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES) |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
Dr. Kaufman asks a pertinent question. If podiatry schools are not filling their classes, why are new schools opening? Why are they staying open?
Podiatry colleges are independent entities. Some are private and others are part of large universities. No one can wave a wand and decide to close any of these schools. If a class is not filled but the university or college is making out well financially with tuition and donations, there is no incentive for them to close, even if they only have "five students." On the other hand, if the finances of these institutions "go South," they may be forced to close, and here again, no one in our profession will have any say over that decision.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY
