NE Podiatrist Named DMU Alumnus of the Year
When Des Moines University (DMU) first asked Robert Greenhagen, DPM, a graduate of 2008, to serve as a preceptor for students in the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, in 2014, he’d been out of residency for just a few years. He has been a steadfast and enthusiastic preceptor ever since. Co-owner of the Foot and Ankle Center of Nebraska and Iowa, he is an adjunct clinical instructor for the college and served as the director of the Midwest Foot and Ankle Fellowship in limb salvage and advanced foot and ankle reconstruction.

Dr. Robert Greenhagen |
Past president of the Nebraska Podiatric Medical Association, Greenhagen has served on committees for the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, American Society of Podiatric Surgeons, and the Nebraska Podiatric Medical Association. He was the first medical director of the Fit Feet Program for Nebraska’s Special Olympics. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Stretching Beneficial To Chronic Heel Pain: MI Podiatrist
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "One of the most common chronic orthopedic conditions is pain experienced on the bottom of the heel. This may develop gradually, worsening over time, while others note the sudden development of a sharp, stabbing sensation from this area, often experienced upon weight-bearing after rest. Nearly one out of ten U.S. citizens suffer from discomfort in this area in their life, with many describing the pain as disabling at some point.
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"One of the most common issues is a tight Achilles tendon, the cord attaching to the back of the heel. Stretching exercises for this structure are common but improvement is gained only through prolonged efforts. Many people fail because of an ineffective stretching routine, either because of poor technique or inconsistency. For others, it can take months to make gains. Still, a recent study revealed the benefits of a home stretching program to be equal to a physical therapy program, where the study participants went to the P.T.’s office. Stretching devices are commonly prescribed and some effective designs are available," says Dr. McLean.

Chronic Wounds are a Hidden Pandemic: Aussie Podiatrist
Chronic wounds are the hidden pandemic in our community, says podiatrist Allan Donnelly, disabling the economy and lives of the people and carers who look after them. Chronic wounds affect nearly half a million Australians at any one time. That is well beyond the population of the Australian Capital Territory, but they rarely rate a mention outside wound clinics (all too few) and conferences.
|
Allan Donnelly |
My specialty is diabetic foot wounds. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I love my work. Again, the figures are alarming; 85 Australians lose a toe, foot, or leg every week to diabetic foot wounds and 27 die each week from diabetic foot wounds. We have a little saying in wound care, “treat the whole person, not just the hole in the person," says Donnelly.

UK Podiatrist Provides Tips on When School Shoes Need to be Replaced
The start of the new school year means one thing for parents - it's time to consider whether or not to replace last year’s school uniform and school shoes - and it doesn't have to be a battle between cool and practical. Rob Payne from the London Podiatry Centre says, "Parents can easily check shoes to make sure that they are fit for purpose. If a shoe wears prematurely, then this will indicate that the shoe isn’t beneficial for the child."
|
Rob Payne |
“When placing a shoe flat on a counter, the shoe must be at 90 degrees to the supporting surface and not be tilted in either direction. If it is tilted, then that indicates that the shoe has become distorted by the child and must be replaced. Shoes that tilt excessively or too quickly usually have an internal issue with the structure. Shoes should generally wear on the outside. Inside wearing of the shoe can be a serious problem with the child's gait and, in such instances, the parent should see a podiatrist,” says Payne.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Tips for Collecting Patient Balances
Practices have been creative during COVID-19 to ensure safe patient access: Telephone visits. Curbside immunizations. Drive-up virus testing. Even checking patients in for their in-office visits while they wait in the car. However, each of these scenarios poses one significant challenge: Collecting copayments and coinsurance. Experts provide these tips to help practices successfully collect patient balances during COVID-19 and beyond:
9. Provide training to front-office staff
“It’s uncomfortable for people to ask patients for money,” says Reed Tinsley, CPA, healthcare consultant in Houston, Texas. Provide training on how to communicate effectively to increase the likelihood of collections while maintaining positive patient relationships, he adds.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
The suggestion that all 3-year residencies provide an equal surgical experience is simply not true. There are differences in training, ability, or the desire to perform advanced surgical procedures of the foot and ankle among individuals within the same residency programs. Many, but not all, of the residency and fellowship graduates in podiatry are extraordinarily capable. It is one thing to perform skin and nail surgery, uncomplicated hammertoe surgery, “lump and bump” surgery. It is quite another to perform TARs, treat complex ankle fractures, perform Charcot’s joint deformity reconstruction, manage a pilon fracture, utilize advanced orthoplastic techniques.
These, Dr. Kass, are the reasons that legitimate board certification in surgery is necessary. Not all podiatrists, 3-year residency or not, are created equally. There is no perfect certification process. However, with...
