Dermal Thermometer Signals Foot Ulcers: TX Podiatrist

More than 20 million children and adults are living with diabetes. Over time, many diabetics lose feeling in their feet and develop major infections which can lead to amputation. Now there's a new tool that's catching the problem before it becomes serious.

Dr. Lawrence Lavery

Diabetic patients can now keep a daily log of the temperature of their feet using a new diabetes foot thermometer called the TempTouch dermal thermometer (www.xilas.com/products-temptouch.php). Spikes in skin temperature signal foot ulcers. "So this is a very subtle finding, well before people can see it or feel it themselves, to identify that their foot's going to develop an ulcer," says Dr. Lawrence Lavery, a podiatrist.

The new foot thermometer costs about $150 and insurance companies don't cover the cost.

AT THE COLLEGES

Barry Professor Recommends Sport-Specific Shoes

You wouldn’t dare wear flip-flops to go running, so why wear running shoes to play basketball? Because they’re comfortable? Bad answer. “Someone playing basketball wearing running shoes with no lateral support, or returning from jumping motion with no stability” could end up with a serious inversion ankle sprain, said Dr. James Losito, professor of podiatric biomechanics at Barry University in Miami Shores, FL.

Dr. James Losito

Whatever your sport, “you should have a thumb-width of room from your longest toe to the end of the shoe — a half inch to an inch,” Losito said. In soccer, however, players often wear cleats (soccer shoes ) too tight. “They feel like it gives them a better feel for the ball,” Losito said. “You have to respect that as long as it won’t have a bad ending. Every other sport, have some width.”

NY Podiatrist's Musella Foundation Raises 60K for Brain Tumor Research

What do an inkjet and toner cartridge recycling program, a New York Islanders hockey game, and a rock, paper, scissors competition at Denison University (OH) have in common? They are just some of the methods that the Musella Foundation For Brain Tumor Research & Information, Inc. (www.virtualtrials.com) have used to raise money this year.

Dr. Al Musella (L) presents check to Dr. F. Avraham Dilmanian

The foundation recently provided a $60,000 grant to F. Avraham Dilmanian, Ph.D. of Brookhaven National Laboratory for a project involving a new type of radiation that has the potential to work better and have fewer side-effects than standard radiation therapy, not only for brain tumors, but for many other types of cancers. This new form of radiation can theoretically kill certain types of brain tumors found in children without hurting the optic nerve, thus preventing blindness.

Al Musella, DPM, a Hewlett, NY podiatrist and President of The Musella Foundation For Brain Tumor Research & Information, Inc. (www.virtualtrials.com) also runs online brain tumor support groups. Musella continues to raise money to fund the next stage of this important research project. The next Islander fundraiser will be the home opener, Saturday Oct 6 at the Nassau Coliseum. For details, go to www.virtualtrials.com/hockey

QUERIES

Query: Cosmetic Solution For Hyperpigmentation

I have a 62 year-old Caucasian male patient with hyperpigmentation on his shins secondary to vascular disease. He has asked me if I can recommend a cosmetic cream or makeup that could mask this discoloration occasionally so that he might go to the beach without having to endure the stares of other beachgoers. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

In addition, entrants are eligible for our weekly prizes, as well as our grand prize of a one-week WindJammer Caribbean Cruise. This week’s prize is CarMD (value $90). This is an easy-to-use handheld diagnostic tool which tells you what’s wrong with your car when the “service engine” light comes on. To enter the contest, complete the survey at www.podiatrym.com and send us question #45, along with your name and address. The weekly winner will be announced on Monday.

HAWAII CODING & PRACTICE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP - We would like to thank the many podiatrists who have expressed interest in attending this event, which will be held July 29-31, 2008 (following the 2008 APMA Scientific Meeting) on the Big Island.
