AT THE COLLEGES
Two NYCPM Students Share More than Just A Nationality

Drs. Akm Muktadir and Mohammad Zakir Hossen, both members of the Class of 2019, have a lot in common. Both were born in Bangladesh, and both are physicians; they earned their medical degrees there at roughly the same time, from schools about one mile apart in Dhaka, the country’s capital. But, they didn’t know each other until they met in their first class here at NYCPM in June (2016) and recognized each other as countrymen.

(L-R) Drs. Mohammad Zakir Hossen and Akm Muktadir

Akm, 38, attended the Dhaka Medical College, and became a surgeon; he practiced general surgery in the UK for about nine years before moving to the U.S. Once here, he decided that podiatric medicine would be a good fit with his surgical background. Mohammad, 40, a cardiologist, attended the Sir Salimullah Medical College, and decided to migrate to the U.S. in 2013. He worked with a podiatrist in the Bronx and became interested in the profession.

PODIATRISTS AND FORENSICS
MA, MN Podiatrists Present at the 101st IAI Conference

Forensic podiatrists Drs. David Agoada of Waltham, MA, and Steven Wachter of New Ulm, MN, presented the workshop "Introduction to the Human Foot in Forensic Evaluation" this past week at the 101st International Education Conference of the International Association for Identification (IAI) in Cincinnati. Forensic podiatry is a subdivision of the organization and Drs. Agoada and Wachter serve on the IAI's forensic podiatry subcommittee.

(L-R) Drs. David Agoada and Steven Wachter

Drs. Agoada and Wachter's workshop explained how bare footprints have characteristics that can assist in the identification of an unknown individual. The podiatrists discussed features in bare footprints that are useful in the identification process at crime scenes, explaining the relationships between bare footprints and the foot that created them. Agoada also presented the lecture "The Use of Radiographic Images of the Foot in Forensic Evaluation."

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS
IN Podiatrist to Run 100-Mile Ultramarathon for Charity

When a marathon covers 100 miles through the terrain of Kansas’ Clinton State Park, it gives runners a lot of time to think. “The hardest part for me is to keep going,” said Dr. Jason Denton, an Evansville podiatrist at the Deaconess Clinic Downtown. “It’s a mental thing.”

Dr. Jason Denton

Jason started running a few years ago as part of a commitment to a healthy lifestyle, he said. What he lost was 100 pounds; but what he gained was immeasurable. Jason will be running to raise funds for Deaconess’ new Hospice House.

E-HEALTH NEWS
Group Practice IT Expenses Reach $32,500 Per Physician

Healthcare information technology costs for group practices continue to rise, reaching an average annual cost of $32,500 per full-time physician in 2015, according to a comprehensive annual survey by the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA).

The Englewood, Colorado-based professional association said IT costs have risen by more than 40 percent per physician since 2009. MGMA’s survey covers physician-owned multi-specialty practices, and it assesses the amount they spend on information technology equipment, staff, maintenance, and other related expenses.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Christopher Lotufo, DPM, ABFAS President

Please let me address some concerns about the ABFAS fee structure.

ABFAS' fees address the costs of the development of fifteen different ABFAS exams - in-training, board qualification, board certification, re-certification, and self-assessment exams, and the case evaluation process. Each year, approximately 60 ABFAS board-certified members volunteer more than two weeks of their time to meet and review the current exams' performance, develop new items for future exams, and strategize new exam processes.

These meetings typically take place in January and September, with this year's September meeting taking place in Seattle. The ABFAS board of directors meets four times per year. Two of those meetings are held in conjunction with the ACFAS and APMA national conferences. One takes place during the September exam committees meetings, and the other during...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Lynn Homisak, PRT

When it comes right down to it, each office is responsible for structuring its own “reasonable” pay scale by considering the following factors: your salary philosophy, (e.g., do you support a pay scale that is ahead of the current range to attract and keep a more qualified individual or are you satisfied paying the minimum with the resulting minimum effort and frequent turnover); the performance of your practice (flourishing or barely surviving); economic indicators in your geographic area; employee job performance including years of service, skills and experience, and of course, added benefits, bonuses and incentives, etc.

Likely this is not the answer you wanted as it doesn’t offer that dollar amount you were hoping to see. Yet it’s the process that makes the most...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3
From: David S. Wolf, DPM

Why would I not be proud to be a podiatrist? Sure there are problems with insurance companies, low reimbursement, parity, excessive overhead, government intervention, etc. but what about our ability of making a real difference in our patients' lives, as well as in our life and our family's lives? That's what it's about, not about the faulty medical system that we are a part of.

Every profession has similar complaints and you can choose to feel doom and gloom or choose to be proud and feel blessed that you can make a difference. When you walk in the next patient treatment room, smile, listen, and help them by letting them know that you really care, like only we DPMs can do. Don't worry about your ego... the patient is your reason for being proud.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEW STORIES)
From: Dianne Mitchell-Pray, DPM

I am Dianne Mitchell-Pray, DPM, a fellow of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine and a podiatrist in Sacramento, CA. I would have loved to come out and volunteer at the event "that no other DPMs, especially from the area, volunteered for." No one, to my knowledge, was made aware of the event here in Sacramento. That quote is really sad to see. I probably speak for many Sacramento area DPMs who would have loved to be out there. I know I would.
