MEDICAL EDUCATION |
FL Podiatrist Facilitates Unique 6-Year BS to DO Program
Florida Polytechnic University and the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM), two high quality, mission-driven institutions, recently signed a groundbreaking 6-year BS to DO program. Said Chet Evans, DPM, "I was pleased to be able to bring these two institutions together, and together they are disrupting medical education as we know it.
|
(L-R) Bryan Brooks, Drs. Chet Evans & Robert Hasty (Founding Dean OCOM) |
Florida Poly is the only STEM-focused state university, and students transitioning into OCOM via this program will produce science-oriented physicians that will positively impact the quality of patient care and help to alleviate the local, state, and national healthcare provider shortage." Dr. Evans is the former vice-president for medical education and program development at LECOM, and was vice-president for medical affairs and dean at Barry University for many years.

PODIATRIST IN THE NEWS |
Check with Your Doctor Before Buying OTC Foot Products: IL Podiatrist
If you have foot pain or are interested in making walking more comfortable, you may be tempted to try insoles or other over-the-counter foot gadgets from the drugstore. But Patrick McEneaney, DPM, a podiatrist and owner/CEO of Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists, said you should chat with your doctor before buying.
|
Dr. Patrick McEneaney |
“With so many things on the market, just buying an insert or buying something over-the-counter, it might not be the type you need,” Dr. McEneaney told Huff Post. In addition, McEneaney said, “[I commonly see] people will wear shoes that are wrong for their foot types. Having an appropriate shoe for the activity, also having the appropriate shoe for your foot is almost even more important. It’s a good idea to get evaluated and see if there are any problems.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Preventing a Malpractice Claim Before the Patient Arrives
By the time a patient sets foot in your waiting room, many malpractice risks have already been set in motion or avoided. From your online presence to your appointment scheduling process, preventive steps taken before the first visit can help minimize legal exposure and protect your reputation. Here are nine ways to get ahead of potential trouble.
1. Make sure your online listings are accurate
Incorrect information on Google, social media, or physician directories can cause confusion, missed appointments, and frustrated patients. Inaccurate listings can also raise questions in a legal dispute about whether the patient received correct instructions. Regularly audit your online presence to ensure your address, phone number, hours, and services are current. Keeping your digital front door updated can help patients find you and reduce misunderstandings.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC EDUCATION) |
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
I want to thank Dr. Kesselman for his kind comments, insightful observations, and salient questions concerning the future of podiatric medical education. I don’t think I’ve ever met Dr. Kesselman, but I can unequivocally say, “He gets it!” He is majorly prophetic in his predictions about the future and what we need to do in order to preserve our rich heritage while not losing our essence. It is not unequivocally necessary to retain only the initials DPM after our names to maintain the mandate handed to us through the years to be who we are and continue to be it well. When DSC transitioned to DPM, holders of the former degree did not have to undergo extended periods in sweat lodges to purify themselves of the DSC degree and become DPMs before exiting the ritual cleansing of initials that had become anathema. Some chiropodists preferred to retain the DSC initials but everyone in our profession retained the traits and identity of the chiropodist before signing their name as DPM for the first time. If anything, the initial change spurred us on to become better at what we did rather than distancing us from our roots. We seem to have survived the change quite nicely I might add.
It seems to be time for another major step in our evolution. The next generation to whom we will pass the torch has asked the post-nominal letters be changed to signify an unrestricted license. It is quite obvious from the decline in enrollment at podiatry colleges that the younger generation is not satisfied with a restricted...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) - PART 1A |
From: Kenneth Meisler, DPM
Before trying Intralesional Cidofovir for refractory warts, I recommend considering pulsed-dye laser treatment which has been found to be a safe effective treatment for recalcitrant warts. My office has treated many thousands of patients with warts using the pulsed-dye laser and receive referrals from dermatologists, podiatrists, and primary care physicians for treatment after they have failed various other treatment modalities. We have been able to resolve more than 95% of all verrucae with the pulsed-dye laser. We actually use pulsed-dye laser as the initial treatment for almost all warts.
Very few podiatrists own a pulsed-dye laser. Many dermatologists do have a pulsed-dye laser; however, my experience is that almost none of them use it for the treatment of warts; it is predominantly used for cosmetic procedures. I think that is because the machine takes about 15 minutes to "warm up" and it is so much easier for them to use liquid nitrogen. Also, it is a very expensive device costing anywhere from $40,000 used to $100,000+ new with high maintenance costs. In addition, there is no additional payment. The appropriate code is the usual CPT 17110 code.
If you have a recalcitrant wart you might want to see if there is a podiatrist or dermatologist in your area who owns a pulsed-dye laser and has experience using it for warts. The laser is very effective with very mild discomfort. Less than 1% of treatments require anesthesia. It can also be used during pregnancy, and most children can tolerate it.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (RELEVANT RESEARCH) - PART 1B |
David Secord, DPM
I’ve been using the Panacos graft and the Bleomycin treatments ever since I first started practicing. I list these two together because they attempt to accomplish the exact same thing with somewhat different techniques.
Bleomycin technique: The Bleomycin treatment is my primary treatment for verrucae vulgaris lesions, and I currently have a 99.7% success rate over 28 years and hundreds of cases with the added benefit that if the person has multiple verrucae, treating just the one lesion will allow resolution of all of them in the course of 5-6 weeks. The procedure entails using the body’s own immune system to kill the wart and follows the path of driving some of the warty material into the dermis, where the body will identify it and raise killer T-cells to the...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (BOARD CERTIFICATION) |
From: Anas Khoury, DPM
I have also looked into applying for board certification from ABPM, but was told that because I completed a PSR-24 residency 22 years ago, I did not currently qualify. I have been in touch with CPME regarding this and they have currently approved documents in May 2025 to allow for alternate pathways for certification for candidates in these positions: https://www.cpme.org/specialty-certifying-boards/cpme-220-and-230-revisions-in-progress/.
“See pages 18-19 in CPME 130: Alternative Pathways and Transition of Residency Program Requirements and Board Certification Policies. The recognized specialty board must develop policies to allow those who did not complete a PMSR, PMSR/RRA, or PM&S-36 residency program to apply for board certification.”
So it is now up to ABPM to create the alternative pathway for board certification. I have contacted ABPM regarding this for a timeline of when that would be available; their response is pending.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (BOARD CERTIFICATION) |
From: Richard D Wolff, DPM
Per recommendation of Dr. Steinberg, I reached out to CPME and spoke with Executive Director Heather Stagliano. I was informed that CPME has no association with ABLES or ABMSP. There are only two certifying boards that are recognized by CPME, those being ABPM and ABFAS. As such, there is nothing that CPME can do at this time for individuals in my situation that have been board certified by another board for many years.
Heather informed me that there was discussion in May of this year, and they are working on an alternative pathway for individuals certified by another board to become certified through ABPM or ABFAS. This will likely be discussed at their next meeting in February. In the meantime, individuals like myself are becoming more aware of the need for unity in our profession. We have all seen the posts about the need for a single unifying board. I think I now understand this need. Dr. Kass asked, "When will the insanity stop?" The answer appears to be: not until at least February of next year.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
RE: The Passing of Brett Allan Chicko, DPM
Dr. Chicko, Class of 2001 at TUSPM, always had a smile on his face—never a bad word to say. He had the best laugh and was truly a gentle giant. From the moment we met in podiatry school, he was a source of strength and encouragement. I still remember him taking me down to the gym, sharing his workout, and always cheering me on—both in and out of school. His life was cut far too short, but his energy, kindness, and spirit will live on in all of us who knew him. You will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Brett.
