MI Podiatrist Discusses Buerger’s Disease
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "Buerger’s disease is a condition technically referred to as thromboangiitis obliterans, which affects blood vessels in the body, most commonly in the arms and legs. Blood vessels swell, which can prevent blood flow, and also potentially allow clots to form. Pain will result, associated with the tissue damage from the blockage of flow. Without sufficient supply, tissue death ensues, which is the definition of gangrene."

"Currently, there is no cure for Buerger’s disease, although discontinuing any and all exposure to tobacco is essential. Quitting can sometimes cause the symptoms to resolve completely, or at least reduce them. Apparently, cutting back is not sufficient since even one cigarette a day can make it worse. A surgical procedure called a sympathectomy has been used to treat Buerger’s. A nerve is cut, causing a relaxation of arteries, which reduces the vessels' resistance to blood flow. But this technique is irreversible, meaning if the results are undesirable, the nerve can’t be repaired. But surgical reconstruction of the arteries is not possible because the vessels are inflamed, not diseased, the hallmark of the disease," says Dr. McLean.

Tips to Make Your Practice More Profitable
Managing the financial aspects of a medical practice can be challenging, especially while navigating the increasing complexities of healthcare reimbursement systems. Here are some specific areas you can control that will help enhance your practice finances, ensuring a healthier financial future.
3. Maintain bill collections
Bill collecting is another critical area to be in control. Billing personnel must be well-trained in circumventing obstacles and hurdles presented by insurance companies. These obstacles include required pre-authorizations, paying less than your contract allows, and even flat-out ignoring claims. In addition, your billing staff must keep current with specific policies, coverage criteria, and billing requirements of many different insurance companies. By staying on top of the latest changes and regulations, they are better equipped to submit accurate claims and avoid potential denials or delays.

In a recent response to comments made by Dr. Eddie Davis concerning the value of the APMA, in my opinion, Dr. Virbulus rightfully responded by giving us many valid reasons that clearly demonstrate APMA's value. I am a Life Member of APMA, and in the past was a member of its Health Policy Committee and Public Relations Committee. I have great appreciation for my life member status. That said, I have the feeling that Dr. Davis has things he would like APMA to do that he feels are not presently being done. I know that many other members and non-members have suggestions on how APMA can improve its overall value, including me.
Wouldn't it be prudent for someone to ask Dr. Davis to state his suggestions for ways APMA can give its members more value? So, I will ask him here to express his thoughts, and I hope he responds.

I am writing this comment in defense of APMA. Although I have been retired for many years, I am aware of their outreach efforts through reading their Journal and Podiatry Management. I recall the years when Congress enacted an enormous attack against physicians of all kinds, “felonizing” hundreds of previously legal business activities. Unfortunately, the major physicians’ political arms did absolutely NOTHING to mitigate the horrible damage done against doctors.
APMA was hardly in any position to fight against Congress. But the AMA and their specialty boards had the power. But they folded like a cheap suit purchased at the now defunct K-Mart. This, despite millions of dollars of dues paid to them by MDs.
If you think any other professional organizations are better than APMA, you are sadly mistaken. APMA is at least as good or better. And I speak as a previous critic of APMA. Continue your dues. They are trying.
