PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Foot Pain Indicates Need for Foot Exam: MI Podiatrist

When our feet fail us, who's really at fault? Whether for work or play, our feet are getting us there, and we might owe them a little more respect. "There's usually two of them and all of your weight is focused on both of them," said Kristen Patterson, DPM. "Throughout the day they do take a lot of abuse. "Once you develop pain, especially chronic pain, or pain after an injury, you definitely should have that pain examined," she said. "And also have your foot shape, your foot type examined, to figure out what improvements can be made."

Dr. Kristen Patterson

Some foot issues require surgery, but others can be fixed with good shoes; there are exercises, stretches, pads and products where you can stick your toes in and maybe straighten them out a little bit. Also, there are orthotics - the doctor says having a special molded insert for your foot can turn a bad pair of shoes into good ones.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS
Canadian Province Moves to Make Podiatry a Regulated Health Profession

The government of Prince Edward Island has published draft regulations that would make podiatry a regulated health profession in the province. The draft regulations, posted on the province's website Thursday, lay out rules for those who want to diagnose and treat foot conditions as podiatrists. They include completing a post-secondary program in podiatry, being covered by liability insurance, and having up-to-date training in first aid and CPR.

Within three years after the rules come into effect, current podiatrists must be able to prove they are up-to-date on professional knowledge and skills associated with their field. The draft regulations make the P.E.I. College of Physicians and Surgeons responsible for determining who can practice as a podiatrist on the Island.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Commonly Overlooked Cybersecurity Practices in Fast-Growth Specialty Groups

While there are more than five best practices that specialty provider groups should have in place, the following are commonly overlooked or completed haphazardly.

2. Tailored employee training

Phishing and other forms of social engineering are still the number one initial threat vector in cyberattacks, meaning untrained or careless workforce members remain your #1 vulnerability. Social engineering attacks are more sophisticated, often using a combination of vishing (voice), smishing (text), and phishing (email) communications.Your employees need to understand that it is someone’s full-time job to trick them into giving up their credentials, clicking a malicious link, or otherwise opening up access to your network. Create a culture where everyone understands that they are members of the security team.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Frank Donald Tomasello, DPM

Dr. Frank Donald Tomasello (July 15, 1934 - July 27, 2024) recently celebrated his 90th birthday and passed away on the day of his 55th wedding anniversary, July 27. He was a graduate of UC Berkeley, and CCPM. Don practiced in Castro Valley, CA (East Bay area) for 40 years, where he was Chief of Podiatry at Eden Hospital. Don was my mentor and an excellent podiatrist, person, and friend. I met Don while I was in high school, and he introduced me to podiatry as a career.

Dr. Frank Tomasello

He assisted me in starting my private practice and in surgery, as well as other young podiatrists in the area. He was the ultimate professional and had a heart of gold, always willing to help and give advice. He was very well liked by his patients, medical staff, and the community. He enjoyed nature, hiking, skiing, and cooking. May he rest in peace. My condolences to his wife Penny and his children David and Vanessa, who he was so proud of.

QUERIES (CODING & BILLING)
Query: Coding for Removing Broken K-Wire

I would like to know how to bill this scenario appropriately. I performed hammertoe surgery on the 2nd and 3rd digits and stabilized with an embedded K-wire. On the 3rd toe, within the post-operative period, the K wire broke through the middle phalanx and became prominent underneath the skin. It was causing significant pain, so in the office setting I numbed the toe, incised through the skin and subcutaneous tissue, and extracted the K-wire without incident. Sutures were applied to close the wound thereafter. Post-operative x-rays were taken to confirm complete removal of the K-wire and to re-evaluate alignment of the 3rd toe. Advice would be appreciated.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE)
RE: Kudos to Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone
From: Michael Levi, DPM

I’ve been so lucky and honored to treat Olympic gold medalist and world record holder in the 400 meter hurdles, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, for many years. She is an amazing athlete and more of an impressive person. I’m in awe of her performances. I know she will be just as successful in Los Angeles come 2028. We as podiatrists play an integral role in treating athletes and again it’s an honor to participate in her care.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: False Advertising about Orthotics?
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM

Take this example of easy public access to ostensibly therapeutic orthotics. Will Internet purchasers be told to first make sure they see a podiatrist to rule out acute extra-articular rheumatoid arthritis plantar fasciitis as the cause of their sudden heel pain, not structural or functional foot pathology?

Pine Valley Orthotics

Maybe APMA agrees and will ponder giving the public the benefit of this potential public health alert initiative when it is called for.
