AT THE COLLEGES
TUSPM Students Conduct Survey to Pinpoint Decline in Enrollment

PPMA Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) student representative Daniel Wu and 3rd-year class president John Martucci reported to the PPMA House in June about an online survey they had conducted. The results concluded that podiatric medicine as a viable career option isn’t being presented to students like it should. The survey, which included questions regarding a student’s journey into the field of podiatric medicine, also inquired about a student’s understanding of podiatric medicine and current practices.

(L-R) John Martucci and Daniel Wu

Based on the survey results, Dan and John provided two suggestions: 1) Provide more information and actively engage college pre-health advisors about the podiatric profession. The results showed close to 66% of the respondents’ pre-health advisors never mentioned the field of podiatry to them during college; and 2) Provide more information and actively engage high school students and high school counsellors about the podiatric profession. Only 9.3 percent of the respondents knew about the field of podiatric medicine during high school.

APMA STATE COMPONENT NEWS
OHFAMA Helps WV Neighbors with Socks for Kids Affected by June Floods

June caught many Southern WV residents unaware of the devastation that was about to occur. The flooding killed 24 people; the last child’s body was recovered only this week under a ticket of brush in Caldwell, WV. The waters literally knocked houses off their foundations and even flooded the historic Old White Golf Course at The Greenbrier Hotel, cancelling the Pro Golf Classic in White Sulphur Springs, WV. While many families still await FEMA assistance, the Ohio Foot and Ankle Medical Association wanted to assist many school kids, who are still displaced after nearly two months.

OHFAMA Sock Drive

OHFAMA’s sock drive, aided by APMA new samples of socks, shoes, and boots yielded $325 and 331 pairs of socks. Items shown were sent to Clendenin, WV. That community lost both schools and their entire town. OHFAMA pooled their resources and was fortunate to take advantage of the recent state tax-free holiday in Ohio to purchase the socks.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Lack of Foot Support Presents Unique Risk to Gymnists: CA Podiatrist

Combining beauty, grace, strength, and explosive power, women's gymnastics is one of the most anticipated sports of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Alas, gymnasts' feet are made of flesh and bone, and as such, "are prone to a myriad of injuries," according to Thomas Elardo, DPM, a board certified podiatric physician and surgeon, practicing in Los Gatos, CA. As  a former gymnast and podiatric physician and surgeon, Dr. Elardo is very familiar with the variety of injuries that can afflict gymnasts' feet.

Dr. Thomas Elardo

"Gymnastics is fairly unique in that it is performed with minor, if any, foot support. Therefore, the feet are even more at risk for injury during the various exercises. Nearly every activity in gymnastics is considered high impact and could result in some type of foot injury. Thus, gymnasts' feet take an awful lot of abuse, which can lead to both sudden traumatic injuries like sprains, ruptured tendons, and broken feet, ankles, and toes.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Medicare: Is a DEA Number Required to Enroll in Medicare?

If I will not prescribe narcotics in my practice, is there a way to enroll with Medicare without a DEA number?

Troy Harris, DPM, Swansboro, NC

Response: From CMS -"Provider Enrollment - Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Information Required

The Internet-based Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS) Release 7.19.0, has been enhanced to require DEA registration information in Section 2 along with license and certification information effective with enrollment applications (including revalidations) completed on or after January 12, 2015. The new requirement for DEA registration information also applies to paper applications. Because the paper CMS-855I enrollment application does not include a space to enter the state in which the DEA certification was issued, contractors will develop applications where the DEA certificate has not been submitted with the application or the state where the certification was issued cannot be found elsewhere within the application. To prevent delays and development of your CMS 855I enrollment applications and revalidations, providers should include the DEA certificate when submitting their paper CMS-855I applications."

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Recommendations for Cloud-based EMR/PMI Vendor
From: Joe Detrano, Elliot Udell, DPM

As someone who sold DPMs billing services, billing software, EMR, and  orthopedic products for over 20 years and is now out of the podiatry game, the only piece of advice I can give you is look at podiatry-specific EMRs first.  View demonstrations, get quotes etc. If you find nothing to your liking, open up your search to all vendors but make sure to get podiatry references.

Joe Detrano, Kew Garden Hills, NY

We are using Practice Fusion. It does EMR as well as e-prescribing and it is FREE. It’s worth trying it out,  If it works, then stay with it. If it does not work, you can always pay megabucks for one of the other systems.

Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Brian Kiel, DPM, Neal Houslanger, DPM

Am I proud to be a podiatrist? You betcha I am. Every time I get a wound to heal, I am proud. Every time my patients are discharged from surgery, I am proud. Every time patients say that they feel so much better after their nails are debrided, I feel proud. Every time patients tell me that they love their orthotics because now they can exercise, I feel proud. Sure, the insurance companies are a pain, as are all the barriers that have been placed in our way, but that doesn’t affect my relationship with my patients. They needed me when I went into practice, and 41 years later, they still do and they let me know it. My pride in being a podiatrist has nothing to do with anyone other than myself, and no one can take that away from me.

Brian Kiel, DPM, Memphis, TN

I am proud to be a podiatrist! But I have suffered a bit of an identity crisis for years. In 1976 upon receiving my DPM degree (as did our esteemed editor of PM News), when people asked me what I did, I proudly said I was a podiatrist. However their response was "do you treat children", or "is that like a chiropodist?" So, I eventually answered that I was a physician and surgeon of the foot. As time went on, that was too confusing and wordy, so I then became a foot surgeon. That garnered some respect, but people confused that with an orthopedic surgeon.

Our profession became more recognized through the efforts of our local and state associations as well as the APMA. Through the many efforts of all of us promoting the profession through gaining greater knowledge, healing and educating our patients, podiatry had become more...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3
From: Jon Purdy, DPM

Board certification, in this day and age, is a requirement to maintain insurance contracts and hospital privileges in almost all cases. Unlike days past, when certification was a badge of honor and optional, today, not becoming board certified can mean the end of a physician's practice.

Like any political world, our profession is intertwined among our state, the APMA and multiple certification boards. To challenge this, especially on a state society level, is a political hot potato. Even individuals appear to be fearful in using their names in posting commentary. The APMA, through the HOD, in conjunction with the CPME, gives the green light to the boards of their choosing. It then follows that states will transfer this decision to their individual licensing boards, and therefore the acceptance of hospitals and insurance companies.

Knowing the severity of not becoming certified should make one question...

Editor's note: Dr. Purdy's extended-length letter can be read here.
