INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Spanish Podiatrist Warns Against Wearing the Wrong Summer Footwear

In the sweltering heat of summer, choosing the right footwear is not only a matter of style, but also of health. In the warmer months, our feet are exposed to excessive sweating, chafing, and bad odors, as well as the appearance of fungus if we do not wear suitable shoes for this time of year," explains podiatrist Lara Lorenzo

Lara Lorenzo

According to Lara, there are certain types of footwear that, although common, can cause more problems than benefits when temperatures rise. First of all, she advises against the use of trainers or sneakers made of synthetic leather. This material prevents the foot from breathing properly, encouraging the build-up of sweat and odor. In addition, these shoes tend to overheat and increase internal moisture, creating a perfect environment for bacteria and fungi.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
Orpyx Launches Sensory Insole Program to Combat DFU Complications

Orpyx® Medical Technologies Inc., a leader in sensor-based remote monitoring, today announced the launch of its next-generation sensory insole program, a proactive, scalable solution to prevent the most costly and preventable consequences of diabetes. In the U.S. alone, one in every three diabetes-related healthcare dollars goes toward managing foot-related complications, representing over $80 billion annually (Armstrong, et al., Journal of Foot and Ankle Research, 2020).

Dr. Daniel Ferreras

“This product launch represents a significant advancement in orthotic technology. Clinicians can now medically monitor or intervene with patients living with chronic foot conditions that put them at risk for serious complications,” said Daniel Ferreras, DPM. “By combining clinically validated technology with personalized support, we’re providing patients the tools they need to stay healthier, avoid hospitalization, and maintain their independence.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Boost Collections at Your Practice

Boost your medical practice collections with nine proven revenue-cycle tactics that cut denials, speed payments, and keep cash flowing with no extra staff needed.

7. Track denial patterns and fix the root cause

Run weekly denial reports and sort by reason code. If prior-authorization denials spike, retrain staff; if coding errors surface, audit documentation. Effective denial management is a pillar of healthy cash flow, reminds Physicians Practice in this revenue-cycle overview.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY

5 Things to Consider Before Rolling Your 401(k) into a Roth IRA

Converting at least some of an old 401(k) to a Roth IRA can offer long-term tax benefits and retirement flexibility, especially if you anticipate being in a higher tax bracket later or wish to leave a tax-free legacy.

5. Consider tax-bracket management strategies

If you're thinking about rolling over a 401(k) into a Roth IRA, consider how much you convert each year to avoid jumping into a higher tax bracket. Many savers find it advantageous to break a large rollover into smaller, incremental conversions over several years.

This technique is often called "filling the tax bracket," and it allows you to convert just enough each year to stay within your desired marginal tax rate. Here's how it works in practice: A married couple filing jointly in 2025 can earn up to $96,950 in taxable income and stay in the 12% tax bracket. Partial conversions can help maintain lower taxes now.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC STUDENT RECRUITMENT)
RE: Podiatric Career Day
From: Amy Jo Marcano-Reik, DPM, PHD

Recently, I had the great honor of being invited to present during Career Day for the Olmsted Falls (OF) City Schools (westside of Cleveland/Northeast Ohio (where my children attend). I have presented about podiatry to 3rd through 8th graders using  a combination of visual and oral presentations, hands-on experiences (with durable medical equipment, wound care products, etc.). We had a fun Q&A afterwards with candy prizes, and I've done this every year for 5 years now. It is always such a rewarding experience and I love when students share that they have either 1) been treated by a podiatrist before or 2) have no idea what a podiatrist does. It always sparks wonderful conversation!

It was also exciting to share the day with fellow presenters and career professionals from our community including OF Alumni Katie Moon (American and Olympic World Champion) and Sean Zawadzki (Columbus Crew Soccer).

Career Day is always a fun-filled day that I look forward to each year. As we return to the "back-to-school season", we should begin to think about the "next generations" of leaders, educators, and healthcare professionals.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE AUDITS)
RE: We Are Not The Only Ones Being Targeted by CMS
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

In a recent OIG investigation, HHS and the OIG targeted a single dermatology practice for wound care related issues. In this story, the targeted dermatology practice settled a False Claim Act allegation where they were upcoding the wounds to make them seem longer or their level of closure was more complex, flap, vs. simple linear repairs.

For this one practice, the amount allegedly up-coded and paid back totaled approximately $850K.

The message here is to document the work you do. Photos with the patient's ID and date which have measurements are essential! For the full story, click here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: How About Three Cheers for Podiatry?
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM

Let's start patting ourselves on the back for choosing the profession of podiatry. What physician other than the podiatric physician has the opportunity virtually every day of clinical practice to use simple fishing line-type calibrated nylon filaments to check for undiagnosed and untreated diabetic peripheral neuropathy -- and by doing so, potentially prevent a limb from being amputated, and by this, increase that patient's life expectancy?

Three cheers for podiatry, please!
