WI Podiatrist Discusses Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the number one condition seen in podiatry. Anyone who is active and is on their feet is a potential candidate for this problem. Dr. Andrew Elliott, Gundersen podiatrist, discussed plantar fasciitis in this week's Medical Monday report. "Fortunately, most people find relief with relatively conservative treatments such as over-the-counter arch supports and anti-inflammatory medications. If these options aren't successful, it's appropriate to see a podiatrist and consider night splints, physical therapy, custom-made orthotics, and corticosteroid injections."

Dr. Andrew Elliott

"If after six to nine months of unsuccessful podiatric treatment the pain is still there, surgery may become necessary. An endoscopic plantar fasciotomy (EPF) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that lengthens and relieves the stress of the ligament in the heel. Only two tiny five-millimeter incisions are made on the side of the heel, and patients are usually back in their shoes in three days," says Elliott.

Wearing Too Small Kids Shoes Can Lead to Life-Long Foot Problems: CA Podiatrist

Shopping for new shoes has become a major part of the annual back-to-school ritual. California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA) President Rebecca Moellmer, DPM, a board certified podiatric physician and surgeon, says, "Many children are wearing shoes that are too small, which invites the risk of injury and deformity."

Dr. Rebecca Moellmer

As an Associate Professor of podiatric medicine, surgery, and biomechanics at the California College of Podiatric Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California, Dr. Moellmer notes, "The human foot is a highly complex structure, composed of 26 bones working together with dozens of muscles, ligaments, veins, and joints to allow the foot to adapt to uneven walking surfaces, and acting as a shock absorber with each step. These bones are typically not hardened until one is in their early twenties, and ill-fitting shoes during this period of development can lead to life-long foot problems."

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Are You Proud to be a Podiatrist? (Michael. Z. Metzger, DPM)
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM

A few years ago, I was lecturing to over 200 attendees. I asked the podiatrists present to raise their hand if they love the practice of podiatry. Two doctors raised their hand. That spoke volumes to me. As Dr. Udell proudly states, we help a lot of people. And no doubt we all feel a great sense of pride in that. But that is no longer what the practice of podiatry is. So let me answer this question - Am I proud to be a podiatrist in 2016? The answer is no.

No, because a podiatrist (like all other physicians) has become nothing more than a pawn of the insurance companies and Medicare. No, because in our desperation to find parity, we...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Name Withheld2

I strongly echo the thoughts outlined in the previous postings regarding ABFAS fees/board practices. I am a young practitioner as well and have consistently found the board directors and personnel go out of their way to remain difficult and disenfranchise our profession from within and from day-to-day realistic working conditions. They are politicians who enjoy ego-stroking and accolades.

As a student, these characteristics were evident early on, where I had been forced to believe ABFAS/ABPS certification is the be-all end-all, which simply isn’t true. Moreover, as the board attempts to attain parity among medical specialties, particularly orthopaedics, the certification process is found to be...

RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day

Everything came together at the 1996 Summer Olympics for Michael Johnson, who sprinted his way to legendary status in track and field, and athletics in general.  By the end of his events in 1996, Johnson held the world record in the 200m dash at 19.32 seconds and the Olympic record for the 400m with a time of 43.49 seconds.
