ND Podiatrist Runs for Moorhead City Council
Nine candidates are now in the running for Moorhead City Council with five of them facing off for an open seat representing the city's north side. Filing Friday was Dr. Matthew Kammerer, 56. Kammerer is running for the Ward 3 seat being vacated by Mike Hulett.
|
|
Dr. Matthew Kammerer |
Kammerer said he believes he can bring some "stability" to the Moorhead council, and said he will work to create a positive identity for the city. He is a podiatrist at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fargo. Before moving to Moorhead a few years ago, he lived in Breckenridge, where he served on the City Council for about eight years.

NE Podiatrist Recovers from Cycling Accident
State Sen. Robert Hilkemann says he has no doubt he’ll be ready for the 2017 legislative session despite suffering a serious bicycle accident a few weeks ago. But the senator who serves constituents in west Omaha has a more ambitious goal in mind — to be back on his bike by Labor Day. “That’s my goal; I’m not sure my doctor has signed on,” he said last week. The 68-year-old retired podiatrist suffered a broken hip and collar bone July 15.

Dr. Robert Hilkemann and cracked bicycle helmet. |
He has no memory of the fall, however, as he was knocked unconscious despite wearing a helmet. Dr. Hilkemann, who has been an avid cyclist for nearly 30 years, was on the final day of a five-week ride that started in Seattle, Washington. He had ridden nearly 2,000 miles and had just 3 miles left to pedal. The second-year senator said he plans to keep his cracked cycling helmet in his office at the State Capitol, where he will use it to illustrate why he supports Nebraska’s motorcycle helmet law.

Sister's Essay About Tragic Loss of PA Podiatrist Wins Trip to Italy
Though separated by seven years, Alicia Bird shared an especially tight bond with her big sister, Gina Carlo, DPM. Among the ties that bound them closest was their mutual love of Bruce Springsteen. The New Jersey rock icon’s songs served as an inspirational soundtrack for Dr. Carlo, a local podiatrist, as she waged a long and valiant battle against breast cancer.
|
|
Dr. Gina Marie Carlo |
After a nine-year fight, Dr. Carlo died in November 2014 at age 56, but her spirit carries on in the poignant, honest essay Mrs. Bird wrote about her for a recent contest sponsored by the Springsteen-themed E Street Radio station on SiriusXM satellite radio. Mrs. Bird’s essay ended up the winner, earning the Richmondale resident and a group of family and friends a free trip to Italy to see Mr. Springsteen and his E Street Band perform at Rome’s Circus Maximus.

CA DPM Hosts Chinese Orthopedic Surgeon, Volunteers at Olympic Trials
Amol Saxena, DPM hosted Beijing orthopedic surgeon Min Wei, MD with current PAMF Sports Med Fellow Brian Hong, DPM this past month. Earlier this month, Dr. Saxena attended the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, and has 15 athletes competing in the Rio Olympics. He also volunteered at the Jr. Olympics in Sacramento over this past weekend.
|
|
(L-R) Drs. Brian Hong, Amol Saxena, and Min Wei |
“I was surprised that no other DPMs, especially from the area, volunteered for the week-long youth national championships. You shouldn’t just try for the high profile events and teams. Even if you don’t get a patient, you have the chance to educate athletic trainers and other doctors as to what we do. For instance, the ATCs did not know DPMs at Kaiser Facilities treat ankles. These national events are still good opportunities for DPMs to learn, gain experience, and promote the profession," said Saxena.

Bret Ribotsky: What is an example of successful internal marketing you have done?
 |
|
Dr. Marshall Solomon |
Marshall Solomon: We had a program where every month or every other month, we would highlight a service that we would provide, like vascular examinations or computerized gait analysis or orthotic fabrication, or shoes for diabetics. We would send out letters geared towards patients with those specific problems. If they had bunion problems or metatarsalgia or heel pain, then we would send out a specific letter or a newsletter to them regarding orthotic care for the specific problem. For those patients who were diabetics, we would talk about diabetic care and education and diabetic shoes.

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guest is podiatric surgeon Dr. Ali Sadrieh. You can register for future events by clicking here

RE: The Passing of Harold J. Feder, DPM
With sorrow we announce the passing of another pioneering giant of podiatry, our father Dr. Harold J. Feder. He was a recipient of the APMA Distinguished Service Citation for his years of tireless dedication and devotion to podiatric medicine. He was a Founder of the ACFO and Founder and first President of the ABPPM. He was instrumental in getting Blue Shield to cover podiatry claims, which led to the other carriers following suit.
|
|
Dr. Harold Feder |
As a Niles Twp Village Trustee, he got the Illinois Podiatry Practice Act expanded to reflect current modern podiatric medicine. He opened several Chicago hospitals to establish podiatry departments and residency programs. And he was instrumental in the merger of the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine into Rosalind Franklin University of Health Sciences. We thank all of you for your good wishes and prayer in our loss.
Drs. Joel & Marc Feder

Are You Proud to be a Podiatrist? (Michael. Z. Metzger, DPM)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM, Michael J. Schneider, DPM
What makes me so proud to be a podiatrist is rooted in what first motivated me to apply to podiatric medical school well over 35 years ago. At that time, I had just completed clerical training and I was also pursuing a masters in biochemistry. My grandfather who lived with us was having severe foot pain. His feet were the bane of his existence and not knowing what a podiatrist was, we took him to internists and orthopedists, but no one was able to help him.
Finally, someone recommended that we see a podiatrist. We followed through but with a healthy amount of skepticism. Frankly, we did not believe that anyone could bring my grandfather relief. To our surprise, the podiatrist we took him to was able to alleviate all of his symptoms in one visit! I was so impressed that I declared from that moment on to pursue a career in podiatry. For over three decades, I have brought relief to countless others in the way a local podiatrist brought relief to my grandfather.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY
Coincidentally, I had a doctor appointment today. They had a pre-filled encounter sheet with Michael J. Schneider, MD. I immediately corrected it to Michael J. Schneider, DPM. If you are not proud to be a podiatrist.....maybe you should have pursued a different career.
Michael J. Schneider, DPM, Denver, CO

RE: Mrs. Malaprops Returns
When asked if she had taken anything for her foot pain and swelling, the patient responded that "my medical doctor got me pregnant zone." Sounds like a good Dr. Phil episode!
