PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
CA Podiatrists Ensure Fit Feet at the Special Olympics World Games

Over 5,900 athletes descended upon the Los Angeles metropolitan area for the Special Olympics World Games 2015. Special Olympics combines sporting events with health screenings to make sure its competitors are in top shape for the week’s events. Prior to competition, all athletes receive a physical exam at Medfest; during the competition athletes are encouraged to be a part of the Healthy Athletes screenings. Fit Feet was started as a Healthy Athletes program in 2002 by Dr. Pat Nunan, a podiatrist, and it has since grown to be included in Special Olympics games around the world.

Podiatric volunteers at Special Olympics World Games 2015

Fit Feet consists of shoe and sock evaluations, feet measurement, routine dermatology exams, basic neurovascular exams, basic musculoskeletal exams, and gait exams. If any pathology is found, the athletes will get a document stating what was found and whom to see when they return home. As Special Olympics International’s data has shown, about 24% of the athlete population wear and compete in the wrong-sized shoes. Dr. Jennifer D’Amico, a podiatrist, met a team from Africa that told her shoes that were provided by the Fit Feet to all the athletes were the first pair of shoes they had gotten as a team.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS
NY Podiatrist is Supporter of Pickleball

Pickleball has a strong base of popularity with the snowbird set, many of whom gained familiarity with the sport during winters in Florida and visits to The Villages retirement community in the north-central part of New York State, according to players. Podiatrist Dr. Steven Gutsin, 46, and wife Isabelle Gutsin, 47, defined the sport as physical and social interaction. “It’s one of the few physical activities you can do as you get older and not hurt yourself,” said Steven. “People at any age could be great at this sport. It seems you get better as you get older. Plus it’s good for the heart, and it’s as good as any racket sport for the feet.”

Dr. Steven Gutsin

The podiatrist, in supporting the sport, sent this cautionary note to his fellow pickleballers. “Older people who have problems with their balance should consult their physician before playing because they may be subject to falling and hurting themselves.”

IL Podiatrist Awarded First Talus Tank Investment Prize

A Northbrook Illinois-based start-up founded by Dr. Michael Tagge, MyHealthMyPrice, was awarded the first ever Talus Tank investment prize of $250,000. Dr. Severko Hrywnak presents the Talus Tank check to Dr. Michael Tagge.

Based off the highly successful television series The Shark Tank, The Talus Tank was launched in early 2015 by Dr. Severko Hrywnak to give entrepreneurs an opportunity to present their ideas or products involving healthcare to a panel of investors to receive funding and support.

ICD-10 UPDATE

New ICD-10 Guidance - Part 10

Question 11: Does this added ICD-10 flexibility regarding audits only apply to Medicare?

Answer 11: The official Guidance only applies to Medicare fee-for-service claims from physician or other practitioner claims billed under the Medicare Fee-for-Service Part B physician fee schedule. This Guidance does not apply to claims submitted for beneficiaries with Medicaid coverage, either primary or secondary.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Going Out-of-Network
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

A dermatologist in the neighborhood that I practice in decided about 1.5 years ago to stop taking insurance. She had enough. She sent out letters to all her patients informing her it was too costly for her to maintain her participation in the networks. She informed her patients she would have two tier pricing. 75 dollars for a visit or 150 dollars for a procedure. You paid one or the other, never both.

After, 1-1.5 years, a second round of letters went to her patients. The letter read her office was being closed, and if anyone needed their chart notes or biopsy reports to let her know. I was told by patients who knew the doctor well that she had lost many patients by dropping the insurance plans and that her practice lost its viability.

There are doctors on this forum who constantly tout dropping out of plans. Some tout the need to have testicular fortitude to do it. This particular dermatologist appeared to have that fortitude. She currently is out of practice.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A
From: Rachel Eisenfeld, C.Ped

I am not a podiatrist. I have been a certified pedorthist for 8 years. I try to continually educate myself by staying up-to-date with what is happening in the foot world. I do subscribe to PM News, but Dr. Steinberg’s response was sent to me by an open-minded podiatrist who I happen to work with on a regular basis. I am not surprised by Dr. Steinberg’s response to Dr. McGuire’s comments. Most podiatrists feel the same way. Dr. McGuire, as well as the podiatrist I work with, are forward thinkers and do not pride themselves on having to do it all.

I am not your “typical” certified pedorthist. I am 29 years old, I run my own orthotics company which does...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1B
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM

Dr. Wolf's comparison of bias directed against the pedorthics profession as somehow analogous to prejudicial denial of privileges to podiatrists is both insulting and inaccurate. Is Dr. Wolf suggesting that 4 years of college, 4 years of post-graduate education, and 3 years of residency are equivalent to 3 weeks of training following high school? 21 days vs. 11 years? Biomechanics, kinesiology, therapeutic orthotics, brace and therapeutic/corrective shoe interventions.

Is Dr. Wolf content to relinquish these patient care decisions to individuals with a 3-week education? If so, I suggest that Dr. Wolf send his patients to the Good Feet Store or the nearest Dr. Scholls computerized custom orthotic machine for care.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Outrageous Looking Foot of the Day

A pensioner has been left in agony after three bizarre toenail-like 'horns' sprouted from her foot - and continued to grow. The unnamed woman's family says she is in incredible pain and and cannot sleep, let alone walk. Her son told local media in Saudi Arabia: 'Nobody knows what it is. It looks like three toenails growing on the sole of her foot.

Cutaneous Horns

One expert told MailOnline today the woman appeared to have a condition called cutaneous horns. These are hard conical projections from the skin, made of compact keratin - the same tough protein found in fingernails and skin. Cutaneous horns are so named as they resemble an animal’s horn.
