MA Podiatrist Discusses Plantar Fasciitis
Inflammation of your plantar fascia—a thick band of tissue in the arch of your foot—is one of the most common foot injuries for active individuals. “Under normal circumstances, your plantar fascia helps absorb the shock of pounding on pavement,” John Giurini, DPM Chief of Podiatric Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center says. “But repetitive stretching can lead to inflammation and irritation, and even small tears.”
|
|
Dr. John Giurini |
“When caught early, mild cases can be treated conservatively with rest, ice, and stretching to give the inflammation time to heal,” Dr. Giurini says. “In some cases, physical therapy and orthotic devices can be helpful. In more severe or resistant cases, steroid injections and surgical procedures may be necessary to alleviate this pain.”

NH Podiatrist Joins Staff at Memorial Hospital
David Hoeft, DPM has joined Memorial Hospital. Hoeft received his doctor of podiatric medicine from Des Moines University and completed a three-year foot and ankle surgery residency in rear-foot/ankle surgery at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago.
|
|
Dr. David Hoeft |
He says he has always wanted to work in medicine. “While playing lacrosse in college, I observed teammates with ankle injuries get back into their game after successful foot and ankle surgeries,” he said. “I was also inspired by the scope of work being done in podiatry while in medical school and continue to be amazed by what can be done to save someone’s foot, ankle, or leg. While I enjoy all aspects of my practice of podiatry, what I like most is helping my patients to get moving again and to reclaim the quality of life they seek.”

TN Podiatrist Joins AdvancedHEALTH
AdvancedHEALTH, Middle Tennessee's largest, independent, multi-specialty practice, recently announced the addition of Gina Mendoza, DPM of Mendoza Podiatry in Hendersonville, to its growing group of providers. Dr. Mendoza earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Barry University School of Graduate Medical Sciences in Miami Shores, FL. She spent one year in podiatric surgery training at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA and Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital in San Diego, CA. Dr. Mendoza then completed two years of surgical training at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.
|
|
Dr. Gina Mendoza |
Her interest in podiatry was started by an early injury. "I suffered from a large laceration on my foot and was unable to walk for months. That incident made me realize how important the foot is. I couldn't return to ballet for quite a long time.” The incident solidified her desire to dedicate her life to helping people avoid disabling injuries like the one she suffered. “Relieving someone’s pain and making them comfortable gives me a lot of satisfaction,” she says. “It’s very gratifying when someone who was in pain when they came into my office is wearing a smile when they leave.

6 Ways to Improve Your Revenue Cycle Management - Part 3
Although most practices have little control over patient coverage types, they can better mitigate financial risk by understanding all the components that impact revenue. Here are six ways to improve your practice’s RCM reimbursement tactics.
3. Determine your 10 most frequently billed codes - In general, these should account for roughly 70 percent of your practice revenue. Once you’ve identified your top 10 billed CPT codes, add fee schedule rates by payer and code to the matrix for an ongoing rate analysis and comparison. This will help you understand which payers are most valuable for your bottom line.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) | |
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM, Pete Harvey, DPM
I have seen severe cases of erythromelalgia and this might be one of them.
Robert Kornfeld, DPM, NY, NY
I agree with Dr. Pressman. I have been in practice for many years and have treated many gout patients. An acute gout patient will almost “jump” when I open the treatment room door because of pain anxiety. The patient may present using a cane or crutches.
Although symptoms may present almost anywhere on the foot and elsewhere, in my experience, the symptom of redness, pain, and edema caused by gout will almost always present as an area about the size of a quarter over the dorso-medial aspect of either first metatarsal phalangeal joint. The pain is usually exquisite and I tell the patient I am not going to even touch the area to alleviate anxiety. Follow up with labs. Infection should, certainly, also be ruled out.
Pete Harvey, DPM, Wichita Falls, TX

Reflecting back to my years as a student, I fondly remember how Carl was so welcoming to student leaders. He became a role model to many of us through his love of podiatry and leadership skills. Much of his time was spent mentoring podiatry students and practitioners to be their best and address challenges along their path. His daughter Jennifer carries his torch forward with deep pride and conviction.
Hal Ornstein, DPM, Howell, NJ

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) | |
From: Todd Lamster, DPM
This is one area that I have to respectfully disagree with Dr. Morelli. First and foremost, in my opinion, the foot is a functional structure. No matter the morphology, no matter what lumps or bumps are present, if it is pain free, then it is working properly for that patient. Performing surgery on a pain-free structure is ill-advised, as there are too many potential complications. Even a slight amount of pain, scarring, or swelling will most likely be viewed as a failure in a patient who was asymptomatic prior to surgery.
I am sure we have all seen the second opinions following a bunion surgery "that wasn't too painful or wasn't causing pain to begin with." "Did the doctor do it right?" "Why is it still swollen?" "Why is my toe stiff?" Don't let the patient decide if surgery is the right course of action. You are the surgeon; you decide.
Todd Lamster, DPM, Scottsdale, AZ
