NJ Podiatrist Discusses Pickleball Injuries
Pickleball isn’t without the risk of injuries, which, according to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, include sprains and rotator cuff pain, among others. “Some of the pickleball injuries I’ve seen are similar to those sustained playing tennis,” said Samantha Rosenzweig, DPM, podiatrist and a member of the Sports Medicine team at Bergen Medical Associates, which has six offices throughout Bergen County.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Local Marketing Tips for Small Practices
Facebook? Radio ads? Local SEO? Billboards? Email? There are so many options when it comes to marketing your small medical practice that it can be hard to know where to begin. With research confirming that 98% of consumers went online to research local businesses in 2022, focusing on activities that make it easier for potential patients to find you on the Internet is the most logical place to start. Here are some tips for small practices.
Tip 6: Invest in regular email marketing
For every $1 you spend on email marketing, you can expect to earn an average of $36 in return. That makes email one of the very best investments you can make to market your small, local practice. The good news is that you don’t need to create long, overly complex emails to reap the rewards. With most people spending just a few seconds scanning email messages, short and sweet communications perform best. Practice updates, handy health tips, and blog content are all solid starting points. Popular email platforms such as Mailchimp can do much of the heavy lifting—not only can you access pre-designed templates to create professional-looking messages, but they’ll also handle accessibility considerations for you.

Query: Recommendation for a Credential/Provider Enrollment Specialist

RE: Medicare EFT Agreement Changes as of August 21, 2023
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
In the past, whenever initially or re-enrolling as a DMEPOS provider, or when bank changes occurred to your supplier business, one was required to submit electronic funds transfer (EFT) agreements to the DME MAC who paid them. As of August 21, 2023 that is now changing. EFT agreements will now be required to be submitted to the National Provider Enrollment Contractor where your DME application was submitted. Paper checks for those of you still receiving them will also be eliminated as EFT has been mandatory for some time.

RE: Source for Cost-Effective DEA Training Course (Christopher Forsbach, DPM)
From: Pete Harvey, DPM, Sam Bell, DPM
I found the course by CME Online to be reasonable and effective. The course does require all day at your computer but is worth it. Contact Dr. Michael Brody at CME OnLine.
Pete Harvey, DPM, Wichita Falls TX
I just completed the course from CME Online. This is the same site for PICA Insurance for the risk reduction program. It worked well.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A | |
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM
With reference to the post by Dr. Jacobs suggesting that "LEAP" be used in the future to "summarize the examination and treatment of the diabetic patient," it should be recognized that this may create confusion. "LEAP" is already in use in the government's HRSA amputation prevention program, as well as the Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP) Alliance that was trademarked and registered as a 501(c)3 non-profit charity in 2009.
Lawrence Rubin, DPM, Las Vegas, NV
|
|
| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B | |
From: Allen Jacobs, DPM
I would like to explain my position with regard to the screening of patients for “at-risk” clinical circumstances necessitating lower extremity amputation prevention podiatric care. LOPS typically means a 10 gram filament test. What about loss of vibratory sensation with intact monofilament testing? What about loss of temperature perception with intact light touch? What about motor neuropathy with intrinsic minus foot and evolving deformities? What about peripheral autonomic neuropathy, in some respects, the most important aspect of neuropathy due to its association with cardiac disease?
What about entrapment neuropathies which occur with increased frequency in patients with diabetes? Screening testing and stratification for risk is only as good as the testing which is done. Effective screening results in an effective effort to reduce amputation risk in our patients with diabetes. Effective screening requires time and effort, and needs to be reimbursed accordingly.
Allen Jacobs, DPM, St. Louis, MO
