VA Podiatrist Uses MLS Laser to Treat Morton's Neuromas
Sharon Whitt is settling in for a 10-minute treatment that she credits with getting the spring back in her step. Whitt was diagnosed with Morton’s neuroma four years ago. It is a painful condition affecting nerves on the ball of the foot. Whitt exhausted options for it and was bracing for surgery when she learned about the MLS Laser and the great response patients are having to it.

“About 80% of the people get about 80% of relief,” says Dr. Mitchell Waskin, a podiatrist with The Foot & Ankle Center. He brought this laser therapy to his practice in December to help patients with sprains, strains, and arthritis. He calls it a pill-free way to reduce inflammation, swelling, and subsequent pain.

WV Podiatrist Joins Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine Faculty
The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine recently welcomed five new specialists to its clinical faculty in the departments of neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopaedics, psychiatry and behavioral medicine, and surgery. Joining Marshall Orthopaedics is surgical podiatrist James L. Thomas, DPM, as a professor of orthopaedics.

Don’t despair, high-heel aficionados! Dr. Joan Oloff, a California podiatrist and shoe lover decided to rethink the structure of her shoes. "To me, traditional high fashion women's shoes are abusive. ... The idea that pain is something that's natural makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, and women are finally realizing that no, I don't want to hurt," she said.

In her shoe, she said, "there’s no pressure on the ball of the foot. The metatarsal is at a stable position ... because it's stable, the toes lies flat." Dr. Oloff’s shoes are not cheap. They cost about $300 to $450 per pair, but they are beautiful and comfy.

I am a board qualified physician in foot and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery starting my second year as an associate. I was surprised today to see a short email kindly asking me to send $205 to ABFAS for my annual fee. The email, oddly, left out what exactly the money would be used for. Although $205 may be nothing for some of our older physicians, that amount of money is still quite a lot for us youngsters trying to make ends meet. I decided to investigate.
We already pay $2,000 for the qualification and certification exams each, so I assumed that money was not for testing, so perhaps the $205 dollars is for the privilege of being board qualified? Well, that does not make sense either because the bylaws of ABFAS clearly state that we are...

Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery - This fellowship is a one-year experience during which the Fellow will develop a rational approach to revisional and reconstructive foot and ankle surgery. The Fellow will function as a Specialist and participate in the teaching of Podiatric medical students and residents, and have ample opportunity to be involved in clinical and basic research projects. The fellowship will provide the Podiatric Surgeon, further expertise in Charcot reconstruction, trauma and deformity correction.

It’s a sad state of affairs where a person who spent 7 years or more studying medicine is now selling clothing to make a living. It’s not an isolated case. Older physicians who still have many good years left to practice, along with valuable knowledge accumulated over those years, are opting for early retirement because of Obamacare and "shoulder-breaking" government regulations. The sad thing is that there are areas that are devoid of medical professionals, so that clothing store owner would be in a position to save lives every day. Until the time comes where it gets so unappetizing to practice medicine and the schools are short of applicants, there is no incentive for the government to keep tightening the noose around the necks of physicians. Unfortunately, however, that day is soon to come.

RE: The Passing of Sherwin Levy

It was with great sadness to hear of the passing of my mentor and friend Sherwin Levy. He was my residency director in the late '80s. He was a real pioneer in the field of podiatric medicine. He taught many young residents and paved the way for podiatrists to have training in VA hospitals throughout the country. He was a fabulous teacher when it came to practice management and always seemed to be ahead of the curve. He taught us how to act with confidence and be respectful to our patients and colleagues. Most of all, he was a great schmoozer. I will miss him dearly.
