Foot Pain Not Inevitable in Seniors: TX Podiatrist

“While staying active is a great way to preserve overall health and can positively impact foot health, aging can naturally increase the risk of certain foot ailments,” says Joseph Caporusso, DPM, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “It’s important to know the symptoms of age-related foot ailments and take steps to minimize their impact on your overall health.”

Dr. Joseph Caporusso

“Foot pain does not need to be an inevitable part of growing older,” Caporusso says. “Wearing the right type of footwear for your needs, and paying attention to foot health can help keep boomers moving into their senior years.”

Our Specialty Impacts Patients' Quality of Life: NC Podiatrist

Dr. Millicent Brown’s medical practice is all about feet. Hurting feet, big feet, little feet, pretty feet…and feet that may not be so pretty. As a podiatrist, Brown specializes in foot and ankle problems. Brown has joined Dr. Patrick Ricotta at The Foot and Ankle Institute to provide full-time podiatry services in Laurinburg.

Dr. Millicent Brown

“Podiatry is a very helping profession, and I chose to specialize in it because I can spend more of my time in the office one on one, helping my patients,” Brown said. “The specialty actually offers the best of two worlds – I get to spend time in the office with my patients, but I also spend time in the operating room, which I love. By specializing in podiatry, I have an impact on the quality of life of my patients.”

Mobile Health App Market Growing: Report

The market for mobile health applications is continuing to grow and is expected to reach $11.8 billion by 2018, according to GlobalData, a market research firm. The rapid adoption of smartphones and tablets has boosted the demand for healthcare-related mobile technology, and patients and physicians have adopted apps that cover everything from nutrition to diagnostic imaging. About 70% of available apps are consumed-focused while the rest are geared toward medical professionals, according to a GlobalData news release.

The business intelligence provider’s report noted that the mobile health market—worth $1.2 billion in 2011—is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 39%. Software and services represent 80% of the global market with hardware comprising 12% and network and connectivity, 8%.

QUERIES (EMR)

Query: Uploading Data into Different EMR Programs

I have a mobile practice and go to many different facilities. I plan on using Practice Fusion software for my electronic charts, but it seems that each facility in my area is using a different type of software.  How will I be able to upload my notes to their systems with the least amount of trouble? To print each note out and scan it into their system seems to be defeating the purpose.

CODINGLINE CORNER

Query: Hallux Varus Repair

Is there a code for a hallux varus repair? My physician is going to be performing one in August, and I am not sure how to code it.

Lani Smith, Office of Kash Siepert DPM, Roseburg, OR

Response: Because there are no single fixes of a hallux varus, there is no CPT code. You would choose the code(s) from the procedures actually performed. For example, a wedge osteotomy (reversed) to reposition the head of the metatarsal in correct alignment would be CPT 28306. Soft tissue releases at the same site would be included. Another example would be only soft tissue releases at the joint/head of the first metatarsal. In that example, you would choose between CPT 28313 (reconstruction, angular deformity of toe, soft tissue procedures only), a more comprehensive procedure code, and, say, CPT 28270 (capsulotomy with or without tenorrhaphy, 1st metatarsal-phalangeal joint). In yet another example, if the correction was obtained by a "reverse" wedge osteotomy at the hallux proximal phalanx, then the coding would be CPT 28310...only.

So the answer is, it depends on what was done.

Harry Goldsmith, DPM, Cerritos, CA

RE: Sending Data for CMS Incentive (F. Don Chantiles, DPM)
From: Michael L. Brody, DPM, Fred Birnbaum, DPM

A problem being caused by a 'glitch' in your software should be addressed by your software vendor. This glitch may be impacting more than just your meaningful use report. Lytec and Medinotes are sold through resellers. When you speak to your vendor, you are not speaking to the developer; you are speaking to their retail outlet. Lots of companies sell/support that software. If your current vendor/ reseller cannot help you, then find a new one.

Tell your vendor to fix the glitch. The only way to report to CMS for Meaningful Use is to fill out the online form, and you need to get the reports from your EMR to do that. Simply put, it is not the fault of CMS that you do not have good support, and they will not provide an alternate avenue for you to get your incentive payment.

Michael L. Brody, DPM, Commack, NY, mbrody@tldsystems.com

I too have Lytec, and it seems to me that you have some mis-information. Your program does not "send" the attestation numbers to CMS. It merely generates and tracks the numbers and you submit them, with your account rep's help when you attest. I think the problem is with Dabb, not Lytec. I think you should have Dabb talk to Lytec to help them retrieve the numbers for you. I have found that many re-sellers of software don't know the product well and how to fix 'glitches'. If they can't figure it out, there should be help available. I switched re-sellers to ones with much more expertise when I went to Lytec MD EHR, and have had no problems attesting. Your reseller needs to fix this; not you to regather data that is there already.

RE: 3-WEA Antiseptic (Theresa Hughes, DPM)
From: Rob Eells, DPM

A great alternative to 3-WEA is Dreft, the laundry product. We mix water with it at about a 10:1 ratio. Softeners are useful for corns, calluses, warts, painful mycotic toenails, psoriasis, etc. to make the shaving of these lesions easier/faster for the podiatrist, and more comfortable for the patient. I never knew 3-WEA to be useful for anything but softening lesions prior to debridement or shaving down.

RE: Retired NJ Podiatrist is World-Class Photographer
From: Richard W. Boone, Sr. Esq

Dr. Singer is truly an inspiration to me. For a few years now, I have been striving to become a better photographer with a view toward making it a second career when the time comes to hang up my brief case, as it were. If I can only do 10% as well as Dr. Singer has done, I will consider the effort a success. I urge Dr. Singer's fellow podiatrists to take every opportunity to view his work. As a photographer, I can truly say that it is both technically and artistically breathtaking.
