PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
 CA Podiatrist Discusses Ankle Edema

For the average healthy person, swollen ankles are usually temporary. Symptoms of edema include “puffiness, skin discoloration, and a feeling of tightness,” says Dana Brems, DPM, a podiatrist and foot surgeon. Swollen ankles often occur after periods of “prolonged sitting and inactivity,” such as sitting on a plane, Dr. Brems says. Over time, inactivity can cause “fluid to accumulate in the lower extremities,” she explains.

Dr. Dana Brems

Based on the root cause of symptoms, treatment for edema will always vary from person to person. Generally speaking, to find relief from ankle swelling, “elevate the legs, wear compression socks, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged standing or sitting,” Dr. Brems recommends. “Gentle exercises can also help improve circulation,” she adds. “The duration for ankle swelling to subside can vary based on the cause,” Brems says. “Minor swelling due to injury may reduce in a few days, while swelling from medical conditions may take longer and require ongoing management."

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2
Summer Temperatures Pose Burn Risks to Unprotected Feet: CA Podiatrist

As California’s Sacramento Valley experiences an unprecedented heatwave in the summer of 2024, medical professionals are sounding the alarm on an often-overlooked health risk: thermal burns to unprotected feet. With daily heat records being shattered and an extended streak of triple-digit temperatures, the danger of sustaining serious burns from hot pavement has become a pressing concern for residents and visitors alike. Phong Le, DPM, President of the California Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA), emphasizes the importance of foot protection during extreme heat.

Dr. Phong Le

"You should also be paying attention to a part of the body that doesn’t typically get much sunshine: your feet," Dr. Le advises. To help the public protect their feet during this scorching summer, Dr. Le offers several preventive measures. These include never going barefoot, especially for those with diabetes or neuropathy, and always wearing protective footwear when walking on hot surfaces. For beachgoers, applying sunscreen to the feet, particularly the tops and toes, is essential. Seeking shaded paths and limiting outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day can also significantly reduce the risk of burns.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
FL Sports Medicine Podiatrist Discusses Working with Olympic Athletes

“The last time I counted, there are 14 Paris Olympic athletes that I have treated who are competing,” says Gideon J. Lewis, DPM. He is the director of the Foot and Ankle Sports Medicine Institute, where he treats both everyday and professional athletes. During the interview, he discusses the importance of studying the different aspects of each sport and providing individual treatment plans for each athlete.

Dr. Gideon Lewis

Dr. Lewis is also the founder of 360 MedSpa Collective, a medical spa providing sports performance care, luxury aesthetics, and concierge nail care. He stresses the importance of nail salons utilizing the highest standards of sterilization. “Almost weekly, I encounter a patient who developed an infection from a nail salon treatment,” says Dr. Lewis. “This was one of the main reasons for developing my own nail salon facility, to provide a safe and clean environment.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Seven Communication Sins Every Practice Should Avoid

Avoiding seven common communication errors can boost the productivity of the average medical group by 80 percent. So claims Skip Weisman of Weisman Success Resources, a Poughkeepsie, NY-based consultancy.

7. Lack of Directness and Candor

Don’t tiptoe around the elephant in the room, Weisman cautioned.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Benjamin J. Wallner

We want to thank Dr. Haas for bringing this issue up in PM News. APMA places the highest degree of priority on ensuring that doctors of podiatric medicine can practice to the full extent of their education and training to best serve the public health. We appreciate the opportunity to provide a brief a look back at our early efforts to promote, protect, and defend the profession, and to take a moment to highlight a few of our current initiatives.

Back in the 1960s, the American Podiatry Association (predecessor to APMA) successfully lobbied the United States Congress to define podiatrists as physicians under the Social Security statute which governs Medicare. This is the reason podiatrists have enjoyed the benefits (double-edged sword that it is) of being able to participate, and be reimbursed, as physicians under Medicare since the...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM EDITORIALS)
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM

"While not all wounds can be healed, the ones that we successfully treat can be both limb and life-saving for the patient and financially and professionally rewarding for us." - Block

Barry, Kudos on your editorial. I would like to stretch your statement a little more. When podiatrists determine a wound cannot be healed, the door opens to providing the patient with optimal podiatric lower extremity palliative care. The limb saving value of routine foot care augmented by lower extremity multispecialty value-based management of these patients is tremendous and results in additional revenue.

Barry, whatever goes around, comes around. RFC patients are now the most lucrative patients in podiatry, but DPMs do not have a clue of why that is true. They are too busy making peanuts on complex surgical work.

Lawrence Rubin, DPM, Las Vegas, NV
