Estate of FL Podiatrist Donates $100K to Local Food Pantries
The Mayor’s Feed the Hungry Program was recently honored to receive a $100,000 gift from the Glenn and Beth Bredemeyer estate. The funds will help households facing food insecurity throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties.
|
Dr. Glenn Bredemeyer |
As a physician, Glenn Bredemeyer, DPM was keenly aware of the importance of nutrition. Podiatrists treat issues related to diabetes, ulcers, and injuries – and a healthy diet is crucial to preventing, managing, and recovering from disease and trauma.

Nigerian Podiatrist is 5-Time AfroBasket Champion
In a championship defined by determination and legacy, Sarah Ogoke, DPM added another chapter to Nigerian basketball history. As Nigeria’s D’Tigress claimed the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket title, Dr. Ogoke quietly became the first Nigerian basketball player to win five consecutive AfroBasket tournaments. Yet, her story stretches far beyond the accolades.
|
Dr. Sarah Ogoke |
Her commitment goes beyond the court. She juggles her athletic career with work as a podiatric surgeon. Her days are filled with training sessions and sleepless nights, balancing motherhood and medicine. For longtime followers of her journey, this title is a culmination. For new admirers, it’s an invitation to understand that greatness wears many faces and sometimes, it’s holding a baby while carrying a team.

RELEVANT RESEARCH |
New Study Affirms Podiatrists as Leaders in Complex Ankle Surgery
A new study from Weil Foot & Ankle Institute (WFAI) offers powerful validation of the exceptional outcomes delivered by podiatric surgeons in total ankle arthroplasty. The results were resounding: revision rates were low for this complex surgery, and patients operated on by podiatric surgeons experienced no excess risk of revision or other post-operative complications compared to their orthopedic counterparts—solidifying podiatry’s standing as a premier specialty in foot and ankle surgery.
Published in the July 2025 issue of the Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery, the study titled “Risk of Revision and Other Complications in Total Ankle Arthroplasty Do Not Differ by Surgeon Specialty” analyzed over 16,400 cases from 2010 to 2023 using the PearlDiver national healthcare claims database. Patients operated on by podiatrists experienced equally safe outcomes as those treated by other surgical specialties. Adjusted analyses showed no significant difference in rates of revision, infection, readmission, or venous thromboembolism.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLNICAL) - PART 1A |
From: David Secord, DPM
When Synvisc™ was first introduced, I was one of the approximately 75 physicians chosen to use it in the ankle to see if it had the same benefits as in the knee. The trial provided the Synvisc™ for five injections for each patient. My patient count for the trial was 25 individuals, and all but two returned to have all five injections. None of them reported any relief of arthritic symptoms from the treatment.
I have no idea why it appears to work so well in the knee and not in the ankle. This was obviously a long time ago (+20 years) and other formulations have been introduced since then. I would be unlikely to be very enthusiastic about this for my patients after the experience with Synvisc™ in the ankle.
David Secord, DPM, McAllen, TX

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLNICAL) - PART 1B |
From: Steven E Tager, DPM
Having used hyaluronidase mixed with a local anesthetic to ease a painful injection, (rarely) my most recent experience with it was very positive. A rotator cuff tear with advanced arthritis in my left shoulder required a reverse shoulder implant arthroplasty to stop the pain and improve function. Knowing that "gel" shots are given for early stages of knee arthritis, my research revealed it was considered off-label for shoulders. Thinking it should work better in a shoulder in the absence of weight-bearing, I found a local orthopedist who said he would do it.
The hyaluronidase was injected two years ago with very good results. Pain is now minimal and easily controlled with daily Tylenol. Loss of motion is still at 50% but who cares as long as golf and activities of daily living is not a problem! Before a total joint replacement, I'd do it again without a thought. If still in practice, I'd offer it to patients, when appropriate, making sure I addressed any contributing pathomechanical concern to off-load excess force through the joint, when appropriate.
Steven E Tager, DPM, (Retired) Scottsdale, AZ

QUERIES (BOARD CERTIFICATION) |
Query: Board Re-Certification
I have been board certified in podiatry and podiatric surgery for 15 years with the American Board of Lower Extremity Surgery (ABLES). At the time of certification, they accepted my written board examination passing status through the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ACFAS). I had to undergo re-certification every 5 years through case submission, discussion, and review. ABLES was acquired by another certifying board, who has provided verification of certification status for the past 2 years. With my certification expiring soon, this board has told me that I will have to sit for the board exam and submit 50 surgical cases.
I have been in private practice for 20 years and I never imagined I would be sitting for a board exam at this point in my career. As though running a busy solo practice and fighting with insurance companies was not enough already, this adds a bit of stress (not to mention the expense of the application and testing). Is there any advice from others? I have already spoken on the phone with the president of the new certifying board and have gotten nowhere. Another certifying board that I contacted also requires the same process.
Richard D Wolff, DPM, Oregon, OH

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
RE: DPM, Nurse Practitioner
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM
Instead of getting an off-shore MD degree, why not work out an agreement with nursing schools so that a DPM might have advanced standing to get that NP degree in less time than a normal nursing student. This way, an unlimited license can be obtained with an NP degree without worrying about getting a residency match with a U.S. medical residency program.
With the DPM degree and NP degree, one can then apply for a podiatric residency program and treat all foot and leg problems without worrying about getting an ankle permit. After all, an NP is licensed to treat the entire body. My question is how many podiatrists obtained NP degrees or nursing degrees?
Daniel Chaskin, DPM, Ridgewood, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) |
From: Glen Robison, DPM
Thank you for the laugh, but I only laughed because it is real. I tell anyone who is interested in going into medicine that it is about a labor of love and not about money. Any medical professional wants to know who is making the money. Look at who you are writing the checks to: the marketing firm, electrical company, lease holder, mortgage company, medical supply company, lawyers, accountant, stockbroker, EMR software, handyman, HVAC, office supplies. They all make more money than we do and their overhead is a lot less.
Have you ever heard of a billionaire doctor? I’m not saying a hospital or corporation but “a” doctor who continues to practice and is a billionaire? It doesn’t exist.
Glen Robison, DPM, Mesa, AZ
