PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
CA Podiatrist Discusses Grades of Sprained Ankles

Ankle sprain injuries are graded according to the amount of force that causes the ligament to abnormally stretch, per UCONN Health. “I like to think of it as a spectrum” ranging from “mild to severe,” says Megan Ishibashi, DPM, a podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon. As the grades increase, so will the intensity of your symptoms. A Grade 1 ankle sprain is a mild injury where “small tears in the ligaments of the ankle” cause pain, swelling, and bruising, Ishibashi explains. Typically, you’ll be able to put weight on your foot, she says. This type of injury can occur when you “twist” your ankle.

Dr. Megan Ishibashi

A Grade 2 ankle sprain is “a partial tear of the ligament” which results in more pain, swelling, bruising, and greater difficulty walking, says Dr. Ishibashi. If you’re experiencing symptoms consistent with a Grade 2 sprain, you’ll want to be seen by a doctor, she notes. A Grade 3 sprain is a “severe ankle sprain” that results from a “complete tear or rupture of a ligament,” Ishibashi adds. Grade 3 sprains are defined by markedly intense pain, swelling, and an inability to walk.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 2
Pedicures Have Summer Health Risks: DC Podiatrist

Washington, DC podiatrist Sheldon Laps, DPM says he sees many nail injuries resulting from “overzealous” nail technicians “who want to push the cuticle back and end up lacerating the skin.”

Dr. Sheldon Laps

Dr. Laps treats them with antibiotics and at-home soaks — he prefers Epsom salts dissolved in warm water — twice a day for 10 minutes for five to seven days. These infections can be especially dangerous for diabetics with peripheral neuropathy, which occurs when nerves leading to the hands and feet are damaged.

OUTSIDE INTERESTS
CA Podiatrist is Grammy Nominated Song Writer

When David Sharpe, DPM began writing and performing children’s songs to keep his grandchildren entertained, the retired podiatrist with a passion for music never imagined it would turn into a second career, let alone lead to a Grammy Award nomination.

Dr. David Sharpe

In 2012, with his The PapaHugs Band, Dr. Sharpe received a Best Children’s Album of the Year nod for their third compilation, “Are We There Yet?”. As an independent producer without a huge label to back him, the odds were even more stacked against capturing one of the five nominations in the category that drew 300 entries.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Seven Communication Sins Every Practice Should Avoid

Avoiding seven common communication errors can boost the productivity of the average medical group by 80 percent. So claims Skip Weisman of Weisman Success Resources, a Poughkeepsie, NY-based consultancy.

6. Lack of Focused Attention

Communication can’t happen unless you sincerely concentrate on the person with whom you are trying to communicate, Weisman said.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A
From: Richard Haas, DPM

I have been in practice 44 years and can’t understand why the APMA has not been able to make podiatrists physicians in the eye of the law. I have seen pharmacists giving injections and physical therapists giving wound care freaking our profession out.

Being recognized as a physician should have always been the most important goal of the APMA, not worrying if we are MDP or PMD, etc. Who cares about that if we are not recognized as physicians. Where does our dues money go? DOs and dentists seem to know what to do with their money in regards to political action for their members.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B
From: Robert Boudreau, DPM

When I entered private practice in 1984, I wanted to apply at one of our local hospitals for surgery privileges. I called and made an appointment with the chief of staff, a gruff old cardiothoracic surgeon. When I showed up, rather than meet in his office, he chose to hold our meeting in the cafeteria. After going over my credentials and residency training, he said, “I’m sure we can grant you privileges. I often have patients that need a good toenail trimming.” I tossed the application in the hospitals round file cabinet.

Fast forward to the late ‘80s, early ‘90s when PPOs and HMOs hit the scene. The hospital came begging for podiatrists to come to their ORs and do outpatient surgery. I applied for privileges and was granted every privilege I asked for. As my practice grew, I had less time to travel to that facility (a 30 minute drive from my office), and since I held privileges with 2 hospitals within a 5 minute walk from my office, I made the decision to give up the privileges at the distant hospital. I wrote a letter stating my intentions to the grumpy...
