ME Podiatrist Provides Foot Care Advice for Diabetics

For diabetics, good foot care is imperative. Dr. Roy Corbin, a Bangor podiatrist, suggests carefully inspecting each foot daily for injuries that could lead to dangerous ulcers, especially if there is loss of sensation in the foot. Problems can crop up before you realize it.

Dr. Roy Corbin

Keep toenails trimmed, but do so very carefully and never clip them shorter than the end of the toe. Cut straight across or lightly follow the natural curve of the toe. Use an emery board to smooth and avoid rough edges. Inspect the insides of shoes before wearing for any rough spots that develop and can lead to a sore. For soft and supple feet, use moisturizer, but avoid getting cream between the toes where the skin is very thin.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS

OH Podiatrist Stumps On Path to November Congressional Victory

The Republican candidate for Congress in the 2nd district was on the stump in Chillicothe on Thursday. Dr. Brad Wenstrup, held a meet and greet with voters in downtown Chillicothe. Wenstrup has been a podiatrist for 26 years and is a graduate from the University of Cincinnati. He defeated incumbent congresswoman Jean Schmidt in the March primary.

Dr. Brad Wenstrup

Wenstrup joined the Army Reserves in 1998 and served as a Chief of Surgery in a combat support hospital in Iraq. Wenstrup called it "the worst thing, and the best thing, I ever got to do." He'll have to beat Democrat William Smith in the fall. A Democrat hasn't represented Ohio's second Congressional District in nearly three decades.

PA Podiatrist Indicted for Healthcare Fraud

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced the unsealing of an indictment charging a podiatrist who practiced in Harrisburg and Elizabethtown with healthcare fraud. According to United States Attorney Peter J. Smith, in May 2012, a federal grand jury charged Dr. Michael C. Karason, age 43, with engaging in a scheme to defraud healthcare benefits programs. The indictment alleges that Dr. Karason caused claims to be submitted to healthcare benefits programs for services purportedly provided in Dauphin County and Lancaster County when, in fact, he did not perform these services.

MEETING NEWS

AAPPM New Practitioner & Summer Boot Camp Workshops Successful

The American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) returned to the Airport Marriott Hotel in Pittsburgh, PA to hold two different seminars this summer. Both were resounding successes!  Recently, the AAPPM hosted its first ever seminar dedicated exclusively to coding and billing scenarios affecting every practice across the country.  The seminar was so widely anticipated that it sold out weeks before! Nearly 150 podiatric physicians and staff members learned the ins and outs of billing and coding procedures during two information packed days.

Packed room at AAPPM Workshop

The AAPPM returned to Pittsburgh this past weekend for the annual Boot Camp and New Practitioner Workshops. The conference was full of energy throughout the three-day event. AAPPM Chair Hal Ornstein noted, “The best word to describe the past weekend is: amazing!  I am so excited by how eager the young podiatrists in our profession were to learn this last weekend, that the AAPPM is already working on the next New Practitioner and Boot Camp conference in May 2013.”

QUERIES (EMR)

Query: Converting Medinotes Database Into Excel Spreadsheet

I would like to export the Medinotes demographoc data into an Excel speadsheet format so it can be exported into Amazing Charts. Has anyone  done this type of data extraction? If so, could you share how you did it or who did it for you? What was the cost?

Query: 3-WEA Antiseptic

I've been told by my supply company that 3-WEA antiseptic has been discontinued. Is this true? I've contacted the company but no answer. If so what are others using in place of the 3-WEA?

RE: Chronic Diabetic Ulcer (Kel Sherkin, DPM)
From: Gary W. Docks, DPM, Robert S. Schwartz, CPed

I'm sure there is a hallux limitus involved. Do a Keller bunionectomy to improve the range of motion. The ulcer will clear up in less than a month. You need to be aggressive with these patients or you'll be looking at a hallux amputation before too long.

Gary W. Docks, DPM, Franklin, MI, gwdocks@aol.com

Since this patient has a hallux limitus or rigidus, either get the MP joint moving or provide an oblique toe rocker angled from anterior medial to posterior lateral on his shoe. Create the sole where toe off actually happens proximal to the ulcerated joint or at the base of the 1st MPJ. The sole should be designed so that there is no contact of the hallux to the ground. A negative heel in conjunction might help. Furthermore, make sure the shoe is not too short or narrow. Balance the contralateral side.

RE: Source for Looking up Deceased Patients? (J Ressler, DPM)
From: Lori Preece

We have a paid subscription to Ancestry.com to use their Social Security Death Index to identify deceased patients, but if you go to Wikipedia and type in Social Security Death Index, there is a link to a free site for the Death Master File under the heading “Criticisms”. This file has deaths listed which occurred before November 30, 2011. We have found the Ancestry.com SSDI file to be current and reliable.

RE: Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) Perk (Russ Barone, DPM)
From: Marc Mizrachy, DPM, H. David Gottlieb, DPM

I am not offering an opinion for or against the Affordable Care Act. I only wish to point out that I believe Dr. Barone's statements with specific page numbers mentioned is from an Internet chain letter which has been debunked by Snopes and Politifact.

Marc Mizrachy, DPM, Hillsborough, NJ, marcmiz@comcast.net

Dr. Barone raises some interesting facts. I have not read the act so I will accept his statement regarding the content of a few lines out of thousands. However, where I differ in his assesment as well as Dr. Purdy's and others is in their description of captitalism and socialism and what system this country operates under.

I hope everyone has and will use a dictionary to see the actual definitions of these terms. The USA has not operated under a purely capitalistic system since its birth. George Washington sent troops into Pennsylvania to collect taxes during...

RE: UK Podiatrist Discusses Treatment of Neuromas
From: Peter Bregman, DPM

I read the excerpt about the UK podiatrist who talks about the treatment for neuromas. Yet again, I am baffled how in this day and age doctors still talk about cutting out the nerve and having a 20% chance of failure due to stump neuroma. Would you do a bunion surgery if there was 20% chance of non-union? I doubt it.

There is no mention of decompression, whether done open or endoscopically. He also quotes some unknown literature about an 80% success rate. Well, the fact is that number is closer to 50% when it is looked at critically. Please, can we stop this madness and start calling it an entrapment, and start decompressing them, which has about a 1% chance of causing a worse problem and an 85% success rate.
