NC Podiatrist Provides Advice on Buying Back-To-School Shoes

Dr. Jane Andersen, a podiatrist in Chapel Hill, NC, likes to see kids in shoes with rubberized bottoms because they offer good traction for the gymnasium or playground.

Dr. Jane Andersen

"I think the perfect back-to-school shoe is an athletic shoe because it's stable and has a lot of shock absorption," said Andersen, mother of a 6-year-old and 9-year-old.

In fact, she suggests two pairs of new athletic shoes so that children can alternate — especially if they have sweaty feet. (Socks made of wicking fabrics will help, she adds.)

PODIATRISTS AND CHARITY

NY Podiatrist Bikes For Charity in Israel

Mark Levine, DPM of Oyster Bay, NY is participating in his 4th straight charity bike ride to benefit Alyn Children’s Hospital in Jerusalem. The riders will traverse 275 miles in 5 days ending up at Alyn Hospital in Jerusalem in late October. 400 men and women from all over the world help to contribute to this worthy cause. Dr Levine was fortunate enough to tour the hospital with his wife a few years back.

Dr. Mark Levine in Israel

According to Dr Levine, "at Alyn they do 110% to rehabilitate the kids. These kids are victims of accidents, terror and congenital deformities and unfortunately the hospitals are underfunded in Israel too and need to find other ways to make ends meet. All kids are treated no with no concern for religion or race."

To contribute to Alyn Hospital on behalf of Dr Levine and to find out more about this unique institution, please go to www.Alynride.org or write MarkLevineDPM@verizon.net

HEALTHCARE AND POLITICS

Giuliani Recommends 'Free-Market Solutions'

The U.S. "can reduce costs and improve the quality of care by increasing competition" and by "empowering patients and their doctors," presidential candidate and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) writes in a Boston Globe opinion piece. He adds, "We can do it through tax cuts, not tax hikes." Giuliani writes that most Democratic presidential candidates support a "government-mandated model that looks for inspiration to the socialized medical systems" in European and other nations, adding that, rather than "being more like Europe, we need to be more like America."

The U.S. "has the best medical care in the world," but the healthcare system "is being dragged down by decades of government-imposed mandates, wasteful bureaucracy and massive distortions in the U.S. tax code," Giuliani writes. "We need to begin by bringing fairness to the tax treatment of healthcare," Giuliani writes, adding that the current tax code "penalizes millions ... who pay for insurance on their own and receive no tax benefit."

QUERIES

Query: RE: Latex-Free Shoes

I had a patient today who was diagnosed 20 years ago with a latex allergy and is looking for a supplier of latex-free shoes. Does anyone know of such a source? He says he used to get "Dermapedic shoes."

Chuck Langman, DPM, King of Prussia, PA

Query: Arthrex’s Mini TightRope Hardware

Does anyone have experience utilizing Arthrex’s Mini TightRope hardware for a bunion procedure? I have several high inter-metatarsal angle patients who have a lot of soft tissue deformity, which is very reducible. I’m considering trying this technique on one or two of these patients. I am somewhat concerned about tying the motion of the 1st ray to the second metatarsal, but literature from Dr. Chris Nester and others has shown that the first three metatarsals tend to function as a unit.

Bruce Williams, DPM, Merrillville, IN

RESPONSES / COMMENTS

RE: Portable Recording Doppler (Art Korbel, DPM)
From: Richard A. Simmons, DPM

I use Koven Technology's SmartDop and have been happy with the ease of use and its portability. It has the capacity to hold thirty Doppler or PPG Waveforms in memory or you can print each waveform during the test. Even though there are some unexplainable glitches (for instance, occasionally the stored reading will pick up extraneous noise that makes that recording useless), I created my own system that works rather efficiently. There is a computer interface that can be used to upload the data or it can be used directly during the exam.

Richard A. Simmons, DPM, Viera, FL, RASDPM32822@aol.com

RE: Polymem Abuse? (Ken Malkin, DPM)
From: Mitchell A. Barber, DPM

In response to Dr. Malkin's post regarding abuse of Polymem foam dressings for A1 ulcers (meaning one wound)..I feel the statement "The picture is not pretty" is a bit unfair and misleading...I read the document twice and it appears that the audit is targeting those dispensing more than the "allowable" dressings per a given period...I have been using Polymem for all types of wounds (diabetic, venous, traumatic, and more) for over 5 years with excellent results and I think that the code is valid if you explain to the patient that each Polymem is two days of wound dressing material and how to use the product...so for A1, you can bill 14 units for one month for POS home....If I feel the patient may heal faster, sometimes I bill for 7 units and check the patient back in two weeks and see if they need more...I suppose the problem may arise if one bills for more units than is allowed for a month...

Mitch Barber, DPM, Laurel, MD, mitchbkid@hotmail.com
