Scouts from Around the World Discover Podiatric Medicine at Jamboree
Bruce Blank, DPM (OH) led the effort to have a “Future of Podiatric Medicine Exhibit Tent” at the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia in July 2019. The Exhibit’s Medical Directors Drs. Blank, Jason Harrill (AZ) and Robb Mothershed (NC), followed through on the vision of introducing Scouts from around the world to the field of podiatric medicine and surgery as a career choice. Scouts and leaders were able to learn about Today’s Podiatrist through hands-on experiences with instruments used in surgery and to learn about a large variety of conditions treated both non-surgically and surgically by DPMs. During the 10-day exhibit, volunteer DPMs introduced over 600 scouts to podiatric medicine and surgery.

TX Podiatrist is Chairman of SAHA’s Board of Commissioners
The San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA) announced Thursday that its board of commissioners approved $486 million to build and pursue financing for 14 affordable housing developments in the San Antonio area. Of the money, $44 million will go toward redeveloping Alazan Courts, the oldest public housing property in the U.S. The San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA) will issue bonds for some of the financing and is working with developers for other parts.

|
Dr. Morris Stribling |
“We received a call to action from the Housing Policy Task Force to increase the affordable housing options in San Antonio, and I’m proud to announce we are fulfilling and even exceeding that promise,” Morris A. Stribling, DPM, Chairman of SAHA’s Board of Commissioners said, “While SAHA has always sought new innovative ways to finance new affordable housing developments, we are particularly overjoyed of the nearly half a billion in investments that today’s Board decision vote means for the City of San Antonio.”

6 Ways to Improve Your Revenue Cycle Management - Part 1
Although most practices have little control over patient coverage types, they can better mitigate financial risk by understanding all the components that impact revenue. Here are six ways to improve your practice’s RCM reimbursement tactics.
1. Conduct a contract inventory - Obtain copies of all your payer agreements and current fee schedules. Managed care contracts are also critical to the health and well-being of your practice. These contracts affect payment, the way you practice medicine, where your patients may receive care, and patient financial responsibility; yet a majority of practices have little or no understanding of the terms to which they have agreed.

Query: Routine Nail Care LCD
I know that the routine nail care LCD has been retired, but before that, we could have a “date last seen” 6 months prior to being seen or 30 days after we see patients. I’m now getting rejections for Palmetto stating that the date cannot be a future date. Did something change that I’m not aware about?
Miranda H, Wichita, KS
The National Coverage Determination states that when the patient qualifies via the “Routine Foot Care” pathway, and the qualifying diagnosis has an asterisk, the patient needs to have been seen by the MD or DO managing that qualifying diagnosis in the last 6 months. There is no mention of a future date.

| QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) | |
Query: Proper Techniques for Traditional X-Ray Film
There are still many offices using traditional x-rays. We use an older, but properly functioning, X-Cel unit and a Hope automatic processor. Both units are well-maintained and serviced monthly. The quality of our foot films is excellent, but our ankle views are under-penetrated despite changes in technique. We were told that the intensifying screens have a limited lifetime and should be replaced. We recently purchased new 10x12 cassettes with intensifying screens (Medlink, blue, 800).
I need a recommendation for developing proper and reliable techniques (time, mA, and kVp) for our new cassettes. There must be an easy reference or YouTube video to help make this task easier. Our original techniques do not work with our new cassettes.
Greg Caringi, DPM, Lansdale, PA

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Simon Young, DPM
Adding healthier people to this pool might result in lower costs. But "Medicare for all" will result in a government program and when government runs out of money, they usually cut medical, school, arts and sciences, sports, and school lunches.
Listening to the debates, I think a Medicare public option will be the correct path, and let private insurances compete. Private insurances made (according to Sen. Bernie Sanders) $100 billion stealing from doctors and stealing more from DPMs. I have no pity for these middlemen. These middlemen have harmed a lot of private practitioners and, in my opinion, are intent on burying private practice for hospital-based treatment.
Simon Young, DPM, NY, NY

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: David Gurvis, DPM
While neither solidly pro nor against “Medicare for all”, I would ask Dr. Hrywnak to back up some of his statements. A few pro and cons as I see them, in no particular order.
While true that Medicare as it is now handles the older population from the young healthy 70 year old to the chronically ill 65 year old, that would change as it would then include the young and healthy as well as the older and ill and everyone in between. As always, the young or the healthy would fund the ill.
As to taxes, yes, they would go up and in many cases...
Editor's note: Dr. Gurvis' extended-length letter can be read here.
