INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Jamaican Podiatrist Discusses Pregnancy and its Effect on Feet

Pregnancy is a wonderful experience for most women. Many sail through it feeling fantastic, healthy, and invigorated by the whole experience. Others are not so lucky and have health complaints that can be quite debilitating. One complaint that is often overlooked is foot pain and discomfort. "As a pregnancy progresses, a woman's center of gravity will change causing increased pressure on the back, hips, knees, and ankles. With edema (swelling), coupled with flattening of the foot arch (over-pronation or flat feet), many women end up with pain in the heel, arch, and ball of the foot. Over-pronation causes the feet to roll inwards when walking. This can create a lot of stress and inflammation on the bottom of the foot, ankle, calf, and back, says podiatrist Angela Davis.

Angela Davis

"The over-pronation can be corrected by your podiatrist. They should be able to provide you with orthotics. These are devices that can be put into your shoes to correct the problem. Choose supportive comfortable footwear that provides extra shock-absorption. Your shoes should have a strap, lace, or buckle so that they can be adjusted to accommodate the changing shape of your feet due to swelling. Shoes that are too narrow will restrict your circulation," says Davis.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
RI Podiatrist is Competitive Volley Ball Player

"No strangers in Gator's Pub, just good friends that you haven't met yet." It's an apt slogan for the Victory Highway pub with two sand volleyball courts — just a mile from historic Slatersville, America's first planned industrial village. The McGee family has run the popular red tavern and its offerings of food and fun for more than a quarter of a century. A protective net keeps the volleyballs from disrupting the conversation and yummy consumption. There's much to keep off the picnic tables, with eight leagues running all summer, some with waiting lists to join, and fall leagues, too.

Dr. Dennis Hart

Sand Dollar — a well-known team that plays, and often wins, in the pub's men's league every summer — was battling Scared Hitless. Sand Dollar, a mix of old-timers and young stars led by the highly competitive Woonsocket podiatrist Dr. Dennis Hart, went into the match the obvious favorite. So formidable is this team that in the match before, a player on another team shouted an accolade Hart is known to utter: "That's a Sand Dollar hit!"

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS
Bret Ribotsky:  In your 25 years of transversing our country and visiting almost every meeting and city, what have you learned? What stands out?

Dr. Hal Ornstein

Hal Ornstein:  There are podiatry-friendly states and podiatry unfriendly states. For example, Georgia is a podiatry-friendly state and Massachusetts is not. What that means is if you put a certain amount of kilowatts of effort into your practice, your return is much better if you practice in a podiatry-friendly state.

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guest is to be announced. You can register for future events by clicking here

ICD-10 UPDATE
New ICD-10 Guidance - Part 5

Question 5: What is meant by a family of codes?

Answer 5: “Family of codes” is the same as the ICD-10 three-character category. Codes within a category are clinically related and provide differences in capturing specific information on the type of condition. For instance, category H25 (Age-related cataract) contains a number of specific codes that capture information on the type of cataract as well as information on the eye involved. Examples include: H25.031 (Anterior subcapsular polar age-related cataract, right eye), which has six characters; H25.22 (Age-related cataract, morgagnian type, left eye), which has five characters; and H25.9 (Unspecified age-related cataract), which has four characters. One must report a valid code and not a category number. In many instances, the code will require more than 3 characters in order to be valid.

E-HEALTH NEWS
Microsoft Lauds Windows 10 Features for Healthcare; Security Worries Remain

Microsoft in a blog post is highlighting the benefits of Windows 10 for healthcare organizations, particularly increased security capabilities. There are enhancements, but there also may be vulnerabilities within them. The company calls Windows 10 the most secure Windows system ever. New features include replacing passwords with biometric or hardware-based multi-factor credentials, containing login credentials in the hardware and allowing devices to run trusted software only, which can block attacks.

“Still, some very targeted security issues remain, according to third-party technology companies that have studied Windows 10,” reports Information Management magazine. For instance, the magazine notes, “WinMagic, which focuses on encryption, says Microsoft’s new authentication features don’t address FDE security and compliance issues if the BitLocker-enabled drives are decrypted before both authentication factors are cleared. Full disk encryption is most effective (and compliant) if authentication is performed first and then data is decrypted. Pre-boot authentication, as it’s called, is necessary so that the data is not decrypted or unlocked prematurely.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY
Five Financial Reports Physicians Need to See Monthly - Part 1

No reputable doctor would recommend treatment without first taking a history and physical, conducting an exam, and perhaps ordering tests. Yet, a lot of very good doctors make bad (and often expensive) business decisions because they lack the same data-driven rigor when managing their practices. Data-driven decision making starts with well, data. So here are five financial reports that physicians should review no later than the tenth day of every month, for the previous month's activity.

1. Profit and loss (P&L) statement

The P&L, as it's typically called, is a tally of revenue and expenses for a given period, and includes key financial indicators such as gross revenue, net revenue, and overhead. A well-developed P&L displays dollars and percentages for each revenue and expense line item, and compares them against previous periods and budget amounts.

When reviewing the P&L, start with revenue. How does revenue this month compare to the same month last year? Is the practice on track to meet projections? Then scrutinize expenses. Are they within budget? Comparable to the same period last year? In line with industry data for your specialty? If expenses seem "high," investigate instead of hastily slashing them. Many physicians cut staff to save money, only to see overtime rise and collections drop because there weren't enough people to cover key tasks.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
RE: Obamacare and Podiatry
From: Chet Vahovius, DPM

As a licensed insurance agent who specializes in health insurance and a retired podiatrist, I want to offer my opinion about the trend that I see in healthcare. I think that this may have a larger impact on podiatry because so many podiatrists work in solo and small practices.

The writing is on the wall that the ACA (Obamacare) is going to cause large changes in the practice environment. This is due to the fact that insurance companies are losing money on...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
RE: Reciprocity and Telemedicine
From: Dan Chaskin, DPM

Every state society should advocate for license reciprocity of every podiatrist in every state if they had 10 years experience in another state. Telemedicine throughout the country is the future. Older podiatrists who did not have access to such training should not be left out of this process to give telemedical care to anyone in any state in the country. It would be an undue hardship for any older practitioner to be forced to leave practice to get such training just to be enabled to give telemedical care.
