CT Podiatrist to Swim 22.5-mile Loch Ness for Charity
Dr. Marcella MacDonald is making waves in the Scottish Highlands as she prepares to take on the formidable Loch Ness. MacDonald, a podiatrist and swimming coach, has 15 English Channel swims under her belt, and she’s diving into this new challenge having also accomplished many other marathon swims over the years. MacDonald also is swimming to fundraise for Homes for the Brave, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing and services to homeless veterans.
|
Dr. Marcy MacDonald |
“Dream Prepare Succeed” is her mantra — the phrase is posted all over her blog and Facebook pages — and it’s those words she said she uses to motivate the young swimmers she coaches, and the children she speaks to at school assemblies. “The key to it is that people focus on the dream and success, and forget about what happened in the middle,” MacDonald said, speaking from Scotland as she awaits the competition. “My training (to swim) is one of the most pleasant and hardest things to do. When I talk to kids, I focus on prep — not just for sports, but everything in their lives.”

NV Podiatrist Discusses Haglund's Deformity
It might be time for fashion-conscious women to trade their pumps for a pair of wedges or 1-inch kitten heels. Medical professionals agree that wearing shoes with heels that exceed that height — particularly those higher than 2 or 3 inches — may complement your image, but are apt to send you teetering into foot and leg problems. These could include Haglund's deformity, often referred to as pump bump, said Dr. Noah Levine of Absolute Foot Care Specialists.
|
Dr. Noah Levine |
"You get a bone enlargement in the back of your heel where the Achilles tendon attaches," Levine said. "It's not only something that you can see physically, but it causes irritation. That's usually when people come in — when they're having pain in the back of their heel." Frontal foot pain also is a result of wearing high heels, Levine said.

UK Podiatrist Debunks Myth About Home Foot Care
Summer shoe options are endless. But if you're feeling shy about these feet-revealing styles, try filing the calluses from your feet.
|
Margaret Dabbs |
To begin, you want to get to work on dry skin build-up on your soles and heels - but don't soak your feet first. "The biggest myth I have come across is that feet are better filed wet - they certainly are not," says podiatrist Margaret Dabbs. "Water masks the area that needs to be treated and also can weaken tissues, causing skin to become rubbery, and cracks can open. Instead, use a foot file on dry feet, always working in the direction of the midline of the foot."

New ICD-10 Guidance - Part 4
Question 4: What should I do if my claim is rejected? Will I know whether it was rejected because it is not a valid code versus denied due to a lack of specificity required for an NCD or LCD or other claim edit?
Answer 4: Yes, submitters will know that it was rejected because it was not a valid code versus a denial for lack of specificity required for a NCD or LCD or other claim edit. Submitters should follow existing procedures for correcting and resubmitting rejected claims and issues related to denied claims.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF OF THE DAY |
Eight Ways to Improve Patient Communications - Part 8
8. Use Effective Communication During an Adverse Event.
Following an adverse event, effective communication with the patient and family throughout the process may improve the physician-patient relationship. Patients who experience a complication have been affected physically and emotionally.
Understand the difference between empathy and apology. Emphatic communication demonstrates recognition and understanding of the psychological impact this outcome has on the patient's physical and mental well-being. The patient may not remember the discussion, but will remember a disrespectful comment which may prevent further communication.
