DMU-CPMS Announces the 2024 Alumni of the Year and Rising Star Honorees
The College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Des Moines University (DMU-CPMS) has announced the 2024 Alumni of the Year and Rising Star honorees. Joshua M. Vest, DPM '08, a podiatric physician, is this year's College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery 2024 Alumnus of the Year. Known for his dedication to educating others about podiatric medicine, Dr. Vest mentors medical students and residents and leads the podiatric surgery department at Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Kelsey Millonig, DPM, MPH '17 has been awarded the Rising Star Award. She led the Global Health Student Club and participated in service trips to rural Honduras and Uganda as a student. She founded and served as president of Podiatric Medicine Advocacy, now part of the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Northern Illinois Foot and Ankle Specialists (NIFAS), one of Illinois’s largest podiatric practices, has purchased Advanced Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Inc. The acquisition adds two clinic locations in Sycamore and Yorkville, IL, expanding the NIFAS Chicago-area network to 16 offices.

RE: The Passing of Lyman Harold Wilson, DPM
As I write this, I know I will be speaking for many of our colleagues here in California regarding Lyman Wilson, DPM who passed away on July 27th. Dr. Wilson was a mentor to so many young doctors in Orange County. Along with Drs. Nick Grumbine and Richard Viehe, he built up and ran what I consider one of the best residency programs in California at Western Medical Center, a level one trauma center.

He was the epitome of what I think a podiatric physician should be. He was kind and giving of his time to any young colleague who wanted to learn. When I came to town, all of the family docs and other specialists who I met always knew “that podiatrist Lyman”. He fought so hard on so many fronts that even 40 years ago, our residents were taking ER call, scrubbing on all kinds of cases, and even going through microvascular training to assist our replant surgeons.
The only thing that he was prouder of than podiatry were his children. Marc is an attorney; Michael is a practicing podiatrist in Northern California and later in life, he had two lovely daughters, Taylor and Mariah, who recently graduated from college. Dr. Wilson served as president of the CPMA from 1990 to 1991 and was instrumental in buying the CPMA headquarters in Sacramento. Lyman joined me in my practice towards the end his career and I am so proud to say that one of my mentors became one of my best friends.

Jon, I know that you will not just fade away into retirement; podiatry needs you. Thank you for the amazing work you have done for us.

While Dr. Udell recognizes the important role of a multifaceted program to prevent falls in the elderly, he suggests that wearing non-articulated solid AFO braces as well as "other products" can improve efficacy of the intervention. As my previous post demonstrated, there is no evidence that braces or products can prevent falls in non-neurologic impaired senior citizens. The promotion of profiteering from sale of unproven products to address a significant public health initiative is an embarrassment to our profession.

Jonathan, it’s a shame you can’t help your daughter put on her white coat for the first time in public, and, yes, I think it is a form of discrimination. For years, MDs looked down on DOs and still do, but it is much more subtle. They could always use the fact that DOs took the COMLEX licensing exams instead of USMLE and supposedly the COMLEX was easier to pass than USMLE. Now DOs can take USMLE so MDs don’t have the “we take a tougher licensing exam” platform to look down from. And, there are not enough MD graduates to fill all the residency slots in MD hospitals, so MD hospitals have generously condescended to accept DOs into their residency programs.
Don’t let the MDs kid you, there are huge economic incentives to suddenly treat DOs as academically equal to MDs, about a 100,000 reasons per resident per year. This becomes very important when rural hospitals are trying to keep the doors open and it doesn’t hurt big teaching...
