PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS
FL Podiatrist Completes Medical Mission to Honduras

While the purpose of mission trips is to help others in less fortunate countries, missionaries often help themselves as well. Sara Lewis, DPM, a podiatrist with Health First Medical Group, recently took part in a medical mission trip to Comayagua, Honduras. Although this wasn’t her first time abroad serving with others, it still left quite an impact on her.

Dr. Sara Lewis

Dr. Lewis traveled to Honduras with the Podiatry Institute and Aloha Medical Mission for a week-long mission trip. “It’s good for your soul to see the smiles on these patients' and their families' faces,” Dr. Lewis said. “It brings you back to why you went into medicine, and it allows you to have a greater perspective of medicine when you come home.”

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
FL Podiatrist Discusses NFL Player's Calf Strain

The injury bug stung the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at training camp on Sunday, July 30, as first round pick and defensive tackle Calijah Kancey injured his calf. While the Bucs will know more after the MRI, Healthy Feet Podiatry has some insight on that kind of injury. Healthy Feet Podiatry’s Binh Nguyen, DPM previously wrote about Bucs' nose tackle Vita Vea‘s calf strain in 2018.

Dr. Binh Nguyen

“Medically speaking, a ‘calf strain’ is a pretty broad term that describes an injury to the back of your lower leg. People are probably familiar with ‘pulling a hamstring.’ This injury is similar to that,” Dr. Nguyen wrote. “Generally, these take anywhere from 2-6 weeks to heal, depending on severity,” Nguyen continued. “Minor cases are treated with immobilization in a boot and rest. Very rarely do they need surgery.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Local Marketing Tips for Small Practices

Facebook? Radio ads? Local SEO? Billboards? Email? There’re so many options when it comes to marketing your small medical practice that it can be hard to know where to begin. With research confirming that 98% of consumers went online to research local businesses in 2022, focusing on activities that make it easier for potential patients to find you on the Internet is the most logical place to start. Here are some tips for small practices.

Tip 2: Build local citations.

A local citation is another form of business listing. At its most basic, a local citation includes your practice’s name, address, and telephone number. Additional data, such as your website URL, service description, email address, opening hours, and other details about your practice may also be included. You’ll often find citations on directory sites, but they can also appear anywhere business information is shared—including on review platforms, in newspaper reports, and across social networks. There are plenty of dedicated citation sites for health and medical businesses which act as a great starting point. Don’t underestimate the value of building citations on local sites, too, in order to be more visible within your local area.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Post-Operative Infection

I have a patient who had a bunionectomy. The patient was diagnosed with a post-operative infection within the global period which required evaluation and management. I billed for an office visit, but Medicare will not pay. What am I doing wrong? I used -24 as a modifier.

California Codingline Subscriber

Response: You mentioned that the post-op infection required evaluation and management, but you did not specify what exactly that entailed. The modifier is technically correct but then again, the global period covers when things go well…and not so well. It is a bit of a double-edged sword.

Your documentation would have to show that the care rendered is above and beyond what would be considered included in general post-operative care. As always, documentation is key. Since they denied the claim, you need to appeal. This would be the basis of the appeal.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS)
From: David Arkin, DPM

We care for so many diabetic patients that it's easy to forget that many patients don't understand the risks of foot complications. Congratulations to Dr. Paul Han for his publication, What's the Foot Got to Do with My Diabetes? A well-informed diabetic patient is the best first step in preventing the devastating effects of diabetic ulceration, infection, and amputation. This book can be a valuable resource for family, friends, and patients with diabetes.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 A
From: Jon A. Hultman, DPM, MBA,

Dr. Karulak mentioned that part of the problem with scope advancement when comparing nurse practitioners to podiatrists was that there are 355,000 nurse practitioners compared with 18,000 DPMs. In reality, only half of those DPMs actually choose to join their state and national associations – organizations that represent the only mechanism available to DPMs to protect and advance their specialty.

DPMs purchase relatively expensive malpractice insurance to protect against malpractice claims but they do not purchase the relatively inexpensive “insurance” to protect and advance their careers. I don’t think anyone would feel comfortable practicing without malpractice insurance, but I’m not sure how anyone feels comfortable practicing without a state and national association around to protect and advance their career. At some point, these associations will cease to exist given their declining memberships.

Jon A. Hultman, DPM, MBA, Los Angeles, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 B
From: Ivar E. Roth, DPM, MPH

Dr. Karulak states that we are not big enough as a profession to institute change to our state scopes of practice. How about if the APMA studies which is the most likely state to expand privileges and focus not only the state association resources, but also the national on this one state? Once we get the first state to upgrade our privileges, work on the next state, and so on with the easiest first. With the mighty power of the national behind a single state, we could make this happen.
