AT THE COLLEGES - PART 1 |
SCPM Surpasses Scholarship $1 Million Matching Gift Goal
Rosalind Franklin University has announced it has successfully met and exceeded its historic $1 Million Scholl Matching Gift Challenge months ahead of schedule, significantly boosting scholarships and resources for students preparing to heal, serve, and transform lives. Building on this momentum, RFU has launched a new matching gift initiative, the Richard M. Evans, DPM '71, and Katherine Evans Challenge Match.
|
Dr. Richard Evans |
The couple behind both matches, the Evanses have stepped forward to publicly renew their investment in Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. Their support reflects the collective generosity of dedicated alumni and community partners motivated by a dollar-for-dollar match to expand scholarship opportunities for deserving students. Working in podiatric medicine significantly changed our lives, and we've seen the impact our work can have on the quality of life for our patients and how that extends to our community," Dr. Evans said.

WesternU and CDU Announce Launch of Linkage Program for Future Podiatrists
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) and Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) have launched a linkage program that creates an early-admission pathway for CDU students pursuing careers in podiatric medicine. “We are proud to launch this linkage program with Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science,” said Jonathan Labovitz, DPM, Dean of the College of Podiatric Medicine at WesternU.
|
Dr. Jonathan Labovitz |
“This partnership with another university that achieves academic excellence reflects our ongoing commitment to creating opportunities for well-deserving students with a desire to care for others. This new pathway provides students with more than just early acceptance into podiatric medicine and surgery. We are committed to supporting students before they matriculate—through advising and programming to ensure students are confident and prepared as they continue their journey to becoming a podiatric physician,” said Dr. Labovitz.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
MA Podiatrist Discusses Connective Tissue Disorders
Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, President of the American College of Foot & Ankle Pediatrics, recently appeared on Mass Appeal to alert the general public on the importance of connective tissue disorders (CTD). “It is so important to be aware of patients who have CTD. They play a huge role in the understanding of biomechanical and orthopedic challenges a patient may have throughout their life," said Dr. DeCaro. He also talked about how important it is to diagnose it early in children. “Taking a thorough family history is important, and with this, we can positively change the life of a child with early detection and treatment.”
|
Dr. Louis DeCaro on Mass Appeal |
According to DeCaro, “As a pediatric specialist, I am able to begin the process of controlling the compromised biomechanics of CTD with orthotics, which can easily solve these issues kids suffer from!” Dr. DeCaro talked about the importance of screening children for CTD by using a simple test like the Beighton scale. His mantra is and has always been “Prevention begets correction.”

PA Podiatrist Explains Why Super Shoes Aren't Ideal for Daily Runs
Think of it this way: “If you jump as high as you can and land on the ground, you're automatically going to bend your hips and knees to cushion the impact. But if you jump on a trampoline, it's soft, so you can jump with stiffer knees and hips,” podiatrist Alicia Canzanese, DPM, past president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, tells SELF.
|
Dr. Alicia Canzanese |
Simply put, super shoes are running shoes that are designed to help your performance, all thanks to some key parts of their makeup: a stiff carbon-fiber plate surrounded by a small mountain’s worth of light, bouncy foam. Dr. Canzanese suggests only doing enough training runs in any kind of super shoe to get used to how it affects your form.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Ways to Boost Collections at Your Practice
Boost your medical practice collections with nine proven revenue-cycle tactics that cut denials, speed payments, and keep cash flowing with no extra staff needed.
3. Offer multiple, convenient ways to pay.
Swipe, tap, click, or text; the easier you make it, the faster the money comes in. Patients are 30% more likely to pay on time when practices accept digital wallets or cards on file, notes Medical Economics in its primer on modern payment methods and cash flow.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Things to Consider Before Rolling Your 401(k) into a Roth IRA
Converting at least some of an old 401(k) to a Roth IRA can offer long-term tax benefits and retirement flexibility, especially if you anticipate being in a higher tax bracket later or wish to leave a tax-free legacy.
2. Understand the tax impact before you make a move.
Rolling over your 401(k) into a Roth IRA isn't free — it comes with a tax bill. When you move pre-tax dollars into a Roth, you're shifting your money from tax-deferred to tax-free. That's a powerful long-term move, but it does mean paying income taxes on the amount you convert in the year you do it. Why would anyone choose to pay taxes now? Because in the right situations, it can pay off later. It might make sense if:
-
You're in a lower tax bracket now than you expect to be in retirement
-
You have extra cash to cover the tax bill, so you don't need to dip into retirement savings
-
You're looking to reduce future required minimum distributions
-
You'd like to pass tax-free assets to heirs

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1 |
RE: Health Professions Scholarship Program
From: Evan F. Meltzer, DPM
I became aware of the significant cost of a podiatric medical education while working with residents at the Audie Murphy VAMC in San Antonio, Texas. When I graduated from PCPM/Temple in 1977, I never owed the school any money for my four years there, and I paid nothing for my textbooks or equipment. How did I do this?
I was very fortunate to be awarded an Army Health Professions Scholarship (look up HPSP on your search tool) that paid for my tuition, books, and equipment for my four years at Temple. In addition, I was also paid a monthly stipend for living expenses.
What’s the catch? I repaid my debt by serving as an...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 2 |
RE: Trade School vs. Medical School
From: Steven Finer, DPM
I was listening to Doctors Radio the other day. It was a segment on emergency medicine. This physician was presenting a case when he suddenly diverted to a new subject. He was having a lot of work done to his house and complained about the outrageous bills from plumbers and electricians. He suggested that parents send their kids to trade school.
Steven Finer, DPM, Philadelphia, PA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 3A |
From: Jon Purdy, DPM
This is a case of swallowing the bitter pill to remedy the problem. Educational institutions can provide loans, either themselves or by partnering with private banks to secure loans. The main point of my post was to point out that a government loan is the worst type of loan one can get. These loans have become a financial burden on our population. Private institutions will gladly loan money to safe bets such as medical school. They most likely will not loan a person $200,000 for a degree in gender studies.
I have a sneaking suspicion, if one cannot obtain a loan for a dead-end degree or a degree that has a traditionally high default rate, the price of education may drop as quickly as the applicants unable to fund those high dollar party years.
Jon Purdy, DPM, New Iberia, LA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 3B |
From Gary S Smith, DPM
Podiatrists have not gotten a raise from Medicare, Medicaid, or commercial insurance since 1998. Podiatry school tuition has gone up 300% over that same time period. Maybe that's the issue and not limits on loans?
