Lebanon VA Medical Center Expands Certification for Podiatric Residents
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Lebanon VA Medical Center (VAMC) received an added credential for its podiatric surgical residents in Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery (PMSR/RRA) by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education this spring with an effective date this summer. The credential allows surgical residents to be certified to operate on the heel and ankle, as well as the rest of the foot, providing a benefit for patients needing complex surgery, according to Richard D. LaTour, DPM, deputy chief of staff - surgery.

Podiatry Interventions Prevent Falls in Older People: Study
Foot problems are independent risk factors for falls in older people. Podiatrists diagnose and treat a wide range of problems affecting the feet, ankles, and lower limbs. This systematic review examined podiatry interventions for falls prevention delivered in the community and in care homes.
Multifaceted podiatry interventions and multifactorial interventions involving referral to podiatrists produce a significant reduction in falls rate. The effect of multi-component podiatric interventions and of podiatry within multifactorial interventions in care homes is unknown and requires further trial data.

Modulim Granted CPT Code Non-invasive Microvascular Assessment Technology
Modulim, a global leader in non-invasive microvascular assessment using spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI), has announced that the AMA has granted a CPT Code (0061U) for the transcutaneous measurement of tissue oxygenation and hemoglobin using SFDI. The CPT code allows for reimbursement when clinicians use Modulim’s SFDI and multispectral analysis technology to capture, analyze, and report the quantitative values and 2D distribution maps for five biomarkers in tissue.

CMS has priced the PLA code at $27.85 per image on the 2019 Medicare Clinical Laboratory Fee Schedule, effective immediately. The CPT code and pricing will allow healthcare providers to bill and receive payment when testing eligible patients. "Modulim’s SFDI technology is a vital microvascular assessment tool to identify specific areas of compromised circulation. This can help us manage the care of patients with peripheral artery disease, slow-healing wounds, and diabetic foot problems,” said Phillip E. Ward, DPM, a podiatrist at Cape Fear Valley Foot and Ankle Center in North Carolina.

5 Metrics to Improve Your Practice’s Finances- Part 5
Here are five key metrics that can shed light on your practice’s financial health:
5. Posting lag - This is the number of days between date of service and claim submission. The posting lag can vary because of provider coding processes or whether the patient is there for an office visit or a procedure. Practices should strive to reduce the lag to less than five days for office-based services and 12 days for combined hospital and office-based services.

Query: X-rays Getting Included in Facility Stay
UHC Medicare is asking for money back for x-rays (CPT 73630) taken on the same day as an inpatient stay. We took x-rays on this patient in the morning during his office visit and then he was admitted to the hospital later that same day. I can’t seem to find a modifier to append to the x-rays to get them paid. I’d appreciate any suggestions.

Response: I do not see any reason UHC would be entitled to a refund of the x-rays. There are no modifiers available to provide other information to the payer and there is nothing in CPT or CPT Assistant relative to this issue. I recommend that you contact a supervisor at UHC and ask for a copy of the policy being used to justify this refund request. If the money is recouped without your approval you should immediately file an appeal.

RE: Inexpensive Instrument Sharpening Tool

By accident, I came across an excellent inexpensive hand sharpening tool, that is very effective for sharpening small surgical and tissue (nail) cutting podiatric instruments. If one follows the simple directions, it takes about two minutes and creates an excellent sharp edge. It is designed primarily for garden tools, but works great on all sort of other tools and instruments, even ordinary scissors.

Having just read an excerpt from a Miami newspaper that was reprinted on this website I am obliged to hopefully add some clarity. As we all know in this age of social media, only the sensational part of the story captures the headline. While we are all aware of the seriousness of the opioid epidemic in this country, I believe that the singling out of Dr. Olinsky without telling the story of his 40 years in practice is blatantly unfair and misleading. First the facts...Dr. Olinsky was employed from 2006-2012 as a sub-contractor in a multi-disciplinary group with a questionable agenda. He was subject to an exhaustive review by the federal agencies in 2012 and completely exonerated of any wrongdoing. The simple reference to Dr. Olinsky 7 years later without the rest of the facts, I believe to be quite unjust.
More importantly, and not surprisingly, there is no mention as to who he really is. Dave Olinsky was my residency director during my first year. Since that time, and to this day, he has contributed to the education of scores of residents. Anyone who has ever worked with him will testify to his work ethic, compassion, and his sense of humor. It would be a shame to falsely mischaracterize 40 years of accomplishments because of a single incomplete account of something that occurred years ago.
