AT THE COLLEGES
NYCPM Does Annual Cadet  Boot Fit and Conducts Research

On June 30, a large contingent of NYCPM students from the Classes of 2017, ’18, and ’19 and faculty from the Departments of Surgery, Medicine, and Orthopedics conducted research at the annual West Point 2016 Boot Fit and Foot Structure Study, joining colleagues from West Point, Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, and the Hospital for Special Surgery. They all gathered data on the cadet population to see if abnormalities within any of the parameters set for the study predict injury, and if so, what type, according to Eileen D. Chusid, PhD, Dean and Associate Professor, Pre-Clinical Sciences, who coordinated NYCPM’s participation.

NYCPM Students at Cadet Boot Fit

In one long, intense day, 1,217 cadets’ feet were evaluated for their arch height index, foot deformities, and their foot posture index. “We now have data on over 3,000 cadets,” said Dr. Chusid. “This is the largest data set created on this type of population.” Colonel Michael Neary, DPM, Director of Podiatric Services at the hospital at West Point, our co-investigator, will follow the cadets for injuries.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 2
Husband and Wife OH Podiatrists Open Practice

Ensuring that the people of Garrettsville can put their best foot forward, a wife-and-husband team of podiatrists has arrived to carry forward the practice of Garrettsville Foot and Ankle Clinic. Carmelita Reyes, DPM and her husband, Vern Chuba, DPM, have started seeing patients. The doctors of podiatry are stepping into the practice of Dr. Frank Stoddard, who has left the Garrettsville area in order to attend to the greater demands from his Massillon foot clinic. All three became good friends while attending medical school together at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland.

Drs. Vern Chuba and Carmelita Reyes

Dr. Reyes graduated with honors from the Ohio College Of Podiatric Medicine in 1998. Over the years, she has worked in affiliation with Mercy Health Youngstown, LLC, and cooperates with other doctors and specialists in many medical groups, including Associates Family Foot Care, LLC and Valley Foot and Ankle Center. Chuba also graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. Along with maintaining practices in Youngstown and Warren, he recently served as the Residency Director at Northside Medical Center, where he trained medical residents.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Hyaluronidase Injections for Scarring with Fibrosis

A patient recently told me that, following back surgery, he is receiving hyaluronidase injections for scarring, with good results. I know that this not a new idea, but I have never tried it. About 50% of my neuroma surgeries develop excess scar tissue formation (fibrosis) in the interspace, despite meticulous dissection. This may be a good treatment option. What has been the collective experience among my colleagues using hyaluronidase for treatment of post-operative scarring with fibrosis?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1A
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

There you go, making this purely political, but since you did, let me remind you that the PPACA has been blocked from any and all improvements, by a do nothing GOP Congress, more interested in demonizing the POTUS than helping people. The PPACA did have a section addressing excessive insurance companies' admin expenses, which include CEOs' salaries. You are not doing yourself any favors if you keep thinking and using the "they don't deserve" complaint.

Let me remind you, if you have a PPACA insurance plan, it got rid of the pre-existing condition exclusion. It also added much needed protection from having to declare bankruptcy due to a major illness or injury. The glass is half-full, and rising.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1B
RE: What overall grade would you give the Affordable Care Act?
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM

All of the discussion about what "grade" to give the ACA is truly missing the point. Look at the name of the Act. It is called the Affordable Care Act. That is all it is. It does not say "Effective Health Care Act". It does not say "Disease and Pathology Prevention Act". It says Affordable. Period. There is nothing in the word affordable that could possibly have any long-term positive impact on the health of the American public.

Will it save a few pennies now? Perhaps. But quite frankly, in the long run, as the health of the American public continues to decline...

Editor's note: Dr. Kornfeld's extended-length letter can be read here

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) - PART 1C
From: Joseph Weisenfeld, DPM, Brian Kiel, DPM

I took interest in Dr. Kratzer's story of the woman who would have been denied treatment had she started it after age 65 (on Medicare) and that her physician would be threatened with losing his medical license and forbidden to prescribe a medication (I'm assuming it's not classified as experimental.) Medical licenses are regulated, issued, and revoked by the states, not the federal government. The federal government can and does regulate who participates in their insurance programs.

The focus of the ACA is non-Medicare eligible insurance. My personal experiences have been the opposite of the woman in the story. Prior to my being Medicare eligible, I was in a PPO and was required to get prior approval for some treatments and tests. Now, with Medicare insurance, in contrast to the related story, I do not need prior approval for the same tests and treatments. "Death Squads" are a canard (a belief that is not true) -- please see Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) August 23, 2009, admitting such in an interview with Bob Schieffer (on YouTube.) Governor Palin continued to use this term. As Aesop once said, "It makes a nice story."

Joseph Weisenfeld, DPM, Staten Island, NY

Such nonsense. There is no way the woman would have been denied treatment under ACA because she would have been covered by Medicare, not ACA. Why are such things as this spread as gospel?

Brian Kiel, DPM, Memphis, TN

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Outrageous Shoe of the Day

Converse has unveiled the final version of a new Chuck Taylor sneaker with something special built into it just for guitarists. Dubbed the All Wah, the sneaker features a built-in wah pedal. Yes, you read that right. A prototype of the shoe first appeared in 2013, and now the finished product is here.

Converse All-Wah Sneaker

Designed and developed by Cute Circuit, the All Wah uses microsensor technology to track the flex of the sole, then communicates via Bluetooth with the included Wah Box. It works with an amp and can also be connected to a Mac or iPhone.
