PODIATRISTS AND REALITY TV
My Feet Are Killing Me Kicks Off Season 3 August 4th

My Feet Are Killing Me swept us off our tootsies when it first debuted in 2020. For those who love silky pedicures and bright nail polish, this is not the show for you. This TLC show focuses on podiatric specialists, Bradley Schaeffer, DPM and Ebonie Vincent, DPM who tackle some of the most challenging feet to have ever graced television. On the show, the doctors transform the feet of their patients who are in dire straits when they seek medical attention. Often, their lives are improved as a result.

Drs. Ebonie Vincent and Bradley Schaeffer

Occasionally, making an appearance on My Feet Are Killing Me is Sarah Haller, DPM another foot surgeon and podiatrist. According to The Cinemaholic, Dr. Haller is a former ballerina who has first-hand experience of how a podiatrist can provide pain relief when nothing else seems to be working.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN THE NEWS
TX Podiatrist Endorses CHI Footwear

Farouk Systems Inc., has announced that Alan Ettinger, DPM of Ft. Worth, TX will be CHI Footwear's top medical resource, exploring the numerous foot health benefits offered by CHI's Graphene Sneaker Collection. Dr. Ettinger earned his podiatric medical degree from the Temple University College of Podiatric Medicine and is affiliated with Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center.

Dr. Alan Ettinger

"When we think about our health, we often consider the foods we eat, the water we drink, and the exercise we do for our bodies. But do we ever stop to think about foot health and how this impacts our overall well-being?" explains Dr. Ettinger. "This is why preventative footwear is more important today than ever. The right shoes are key in fighting bacterial and viral infections, fungal growth, possible wounds, or further complications."

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Demographic Distribution of Foot and Ankle Surgeries Among Orthopaedic Surgeons and Podiatrists: A 10-Year Database Retrospective Study

Foot and ankle surgeries in the United States (US) are currently performed by orthopaedic surgeons or podiatrists with specialty surgical training. With the trend in healthcare now placing increased emphasis on quality and standardizing patient care, this study aimed to characterize the distribution, volume, and trends of certain foot and ankle surgeries performed in the US by both orthopaedic surgeons and podiatrists.

Results: The study found that the number of foot and ankle procedures performed annually is steadily increasing. Orthopaedic surgeons are the main treating surgeon for common foot and ankle traumatic conditions or complex hind foot cases like TAR. On the other hand, our study showed that podiatrists perform almost 9 out of 10 hallux valgus correction surgeries.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
10 Customer Service Habits for Your Medical Practice

Your patients should feel they are taken care of, they have the ability and the willingness to sing your praises, refer patients, pay what they owe you, and help make sure their insurance company pays you. Here are ten healthy customer service habits for your clinic:

5). Listen and act when your patients complain.

• Deal with every complaint, as complaints can be opportunities to build a lifetime of loyalty from a patient.
• Make sure that you listen to the complaint, check the validity, take action to resolve it, and then let the patient know how it was resolved.
• Always assume the patient is telling the truth.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

It would be nice if podiatric surgery could mimic oral surgery in the way that oral surgery relates to the rest of the dental profession. To be specific, oral surgeons would not be caught dead filling cavities, cleaning teeth, or making crowns and bridges. Podiatric  surgeons, on the other hand, do general podiatry as well as foot and ankle surgery. This prevents non-surgical podiatrists from making referrals to foot and and ankle surgeons because the likelihood is that the generalist would never see that patient again.

It would be nice if podiatry could give birth to true specialists who perfect and practice their specialty and enable general podiatry to exist as a whole and complete separate division of our profession.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1
RE: The Passing of John Stanley Freid, DPM

Dr. John Freid passed away this past week at his home in Maryland. John was a very bright and trained podiatric physician who graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1965 and completed a residency at Civic Hospital in Detroit the following year. John and I were roommates at Ohio College for my first two years before he left me for his lovely wife Judy. I certainly could not blame him for that! He will be missed by his friends and colleagues. I extend my deepest sympathy to his wife Judy and their children.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2

Sad to hear of the recent passing of retired USAF officer, Gil Yocum, DPM in North Carolina. I first met Gil at my first USAF meeting of DPMs in San Antonio, TX, 1981. He always had a great sense of humor, especially about his exploits during his several military assignments or of uncanny practical comments on the CME lectures at our meetings. He had a passion of riding his motorcycles to work and his golfing hobby. I know he is on “Eagle’s Wings." RIP, Gil.
