PODIATRISTS IN THE MEDIA |
FL Podiatrist Discusses Drug Store Remedies for Foot Problems
“When you walk into some of the pharmacy stores, there are just so many over-the-counter foot products that it can be overwhelming,” says Gideon J. Lewis, DPM and founder of the Foot and Ankle Sports Medicine Institute. Dr. Lewis refers to these products as the fast-food of foot products. “So I recommend you use this analogy when looking at these products and use them in moderation,” says Dr. Lewis.
|
Dr. Gideon Lewis |
“It’s funny when your feet hurt, your whole body hurts. When you have heel pain or arch pain most people want a fast treatment. Taking time to go see a doctor can be cumbersome. My usual recommendation is instead of purchasing an over-the-counter insert from a pharmacy or supermarket, I suggest going to a specialized running shoe store. Even though you might pay a few more dollars, most of the time the product will be superior,” says Dr. Lewis.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
PA Podiatrist Provides Advice to New Runners
Warm, sunny days inspire many people to throw on the nearest pair of sneakers and head outdoors for a run. But choose carefully. Running shoes should provide the proper foot support to prevent injury. “The human foot is an amazingly complex structure,” said Christina Rowe-Bauer, DPM, a podiatrist with Penn State Health Sports Medicine. “In fact, an adult’s two feet contain a quarter of the body’s bones, which work together with muscles, tendons, and other elements to help a runner move forward.” Each time a foot hits the ground during a run, it experiences a force equivalent to three times the person’s weight, she explained.
|
Dr. Christina Rowe-Bauer |
“Proper footwear is critical for making sure the feet can handle all that force without pain or damage,” Dr. Rowe-Bauer said. She said that anyone new to the sport of running — or experienced runners who have foot or leg pain — should start with a doctor’s exam to determine general health, foot type, and running style. “Bring old athletic shoes; the wear patterns can give the doctor clues about things like foot overpronation (rolling inward) or supination (rolling outward),” Rowe-Bauer said. “Be honest about any pain experienced during or after running.”

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
Aussie Shark Tank Podiatrists Give Back to Community
The generosity of two podiatrists who have used their influence to help others after appearing on a popular TV show have been thanked by local health professionals. The Wheatbelt Health Network, based in Northam, was excited to have received a 12-month supply of podiatric orthotic products for use in the Integrated Chronic Disease Care (ICDC) program, which supplies access to podiatry services for those patients who are vulnerable and disadvantaged and would not otherwise be able to access such services.

OPIOID CRISIS UPDATE |
FL Podiatrist Ordered over 147,000 Opioid Pills from 2006-12
As deaths from opioids reached crisis levels in Florida, pharmaceutical companies doped the state up with nearly 5.6 billion prescription pain pills between 2006 and 2012, new data shows. Recently released figures from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration open an unprecedented window into the sheer volume of prescription opioids that made their way into the state — legally — and set off a drug crisis that would eventually claim thousands of lives.
Included on this list is David I Olinsky, DPM of North Miami Beach who purchased 147,200 oxycodone and hydrocodone pills. A doctor's appearance in this list does not necessarily mean they have been accused of overprescribing, but reflects that they purchased prescription opioids during the specified timeframe.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Metrics to Improve Your Practice’s Finances- Part 2
Here are five key metrics that can shed light on your practice’s financial health:
2. Average collections per visit - This is the amount of money collected per encounter. Average collections per visit is an excellent way to examine year-over-year trends within your practice. Like net collections, average collections are influenced by increased patient liabilities and unworked A/R as well as changes in payer contracts and procedure and payer mixes. Practices should also consider tracking charges per visit to help identify and remediate any coding inconsistencies.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: Sun Setting Medical Records in Pennsylvania
My hospital, that has been maintaining EMR records from my previous EMR system, is retiring the server. What are my obligations as far as length of time maintaining access to those records, for adults and particularly for minors? I practice in Pennsylvania.
Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice: According to Pennsylvania statute § 563.6 "Medical records whether original, reproductions or microfilm, shall be kept on file for a minimum of 7 years following the discharge of a patient. (b) If the patient is a minor, records shall be kept on file until his majority, and then, for 7 years or as long as the records of adult patients are maintained."

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Switching to VoIP
Has anyone switched to a VoIP phone system and how is it working? Pros and cons? Which company do you use?
