CA Podiatrist Takes Office as CPMA President
Diane M. A board-certified podiatric physician and surgeon, Dr. Koshimune Guadron, will lead CPMA for the next year.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
5 Coding Mistakes That Cost You Revenue
Accurate coding is one of the most intricate and often frustrating tasks that doctors and staff must do. Erroneous coding can bring significant financial duress to a medical practice, either in the form of decreased revenue, audits, or even clawbacks from private insurers and revenue audit contractors (RACs).
4. Missed Administrative Procedure Codes
Providers often miss administrative procedure codes for minor treatments, which can be a significant amount of lost revenue. This includes codes for injections, immunizations, immobilization, etc. Administering injections is among the most routine services provided in a primary care or urgent care practice, but one inoculation includes two codes: a CPT code for the injection, and a separate code for the medication or vaccination provided. Modifier -25 may also be applied if other care is being given. Another example of oversight can occur when placing a splint on a limb. There are two codes to enter: one for the application and another code for the supply item, such as a splint or a cast.

RE: Podiatry Meetings..."We Cannot Direct the Wind But We Can Adjust the Sails." (Kelly J. John, DPM, MHA)
From: Frederic C. Spector, DPM, Steven Finer, DPM
In my 41 years in our profession, Dr. Jacobs has been a leader in podiatric education, his lectures provide a wealth of information. His thoughts on vendors and meetings are well stated. As I see it, Dr. John’s remarks are both uncalled for and intolerant.
Frederic C. Spector, DPM, Savannah, GA
Them’s is fighting words .Bob Dylan is one of the greatest poets singers of all times. Yes, I have Beatles vinyl as well. However, we were in the podiatric trenches in the 1970s fighting for hospital privileges, establishing residencies, and changing the curriculum in the schools. We convinced many MDs that we knew our stuff. By the way, I own an iphone, a tablet, a laptop, and even talk in my car! When we went to the beaches of Normandy to visit, we saw the sacrifices of the greatest generation. So forge ahead, but remember the past.

RE: Podiatry Meetings..."We Cannot Direct the Wind But We Can Adjust the Sails." (Kelly J. John, DPM, MHA)
From: Bob Hatcher, DPM
Tread lightly Dr. John. It doesn't take as long to get old as you might think. You'll be the older guy using the "older than the readers" references sooner than you can imagine. The wisdom Dr. Jacobs brings should not be discounted because his (and my) references are from another generation. What a mentor he has been for generations of doctors! Listen to the wisdom and ignore the reference if you must. You and you patients will be the better for it.
Bob Hatcher, DPM, Raleigh, NC

From: Joe Agostinelli, DPM
The question asked about emeritus status for certifying boards is not a yes/no/unsure type choice. I retired from practice in 2017, which coincidentally was my year point to recertification for ABFAS. I was board certified in 1987 went through the certification process every 10 years. I contacted the board and told them I was retiring from practice and received a letter from the ABFAS stating I had “retired” status with the board.
If I ever wanted to return to practice and activate my board certification, I was told I would have to take the required CME, complete the recertification process, and pay the annual fee. This seemed appropriate to me. Emeritus status makes sense for the fellowship status of ACFAS, AAPSM, and ACPM but should NOT be offered by the certifying boards. Emeritus status, in my opinion, for the certifying boards is misleading to the public, especially as to someone years from retired practice. It doesn’t have anything to do with the years of paying registration fees for maintaining board certification status. The certifying boards have processes in place for regaining active board certification status and have a “retired “category for those fully retired from active practice.
Joe Agostinelli, DPM, Niceville, FL
