PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNTY |
IL Podiatrist Forms New Partnership
Kathleen Daly, DPM has established a reputation as a trusted podiatrist and active member of the community, and she is proud to be celebrating 31 years of service to Mt. Greenwood and surrounding communities. Dr. Daly is a 1990 graduate of the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. She completed a residency at Oak Forest Hospital and has been in private practice since 1992.

(L-R) Drs. Kathleen Daly, Sabrina Landers, and Whitney Castle |
She recently announced a new partnership with Sabrina Landers, DPM and Whitney Castle, DPM of Keir Foot & Ankle Specialists. Dr. Daly will continue to practice at her Mt. Greenwood office, and Dr. Landers and Dr. Castle will be at their Beverly office. They both graduated from Scholl and they completed three-year medicine/surgical residencies with credentialing in reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery at John H. PODIATRIC PODCASTS |
Podiatry Panel Reviews NY Times Article on Skin Substitutes
Ben Pearl, DPM had John Steinberg, DPM and Paul Kesselman, DPM on his podcast, Fit Foot U. The panel focused on the rapid growth and associated costs of skin substitute products in Medicare, recently reported in The New York Times. They also discussed potential measures to control expenses and concerns about overuse and supervision. Future scenarios with Medicare reimbursement and diabetic therapeutic shoe programs were discussed. Here is a short video clip from the podcast:
|
Dr. Paul Kesselman |
The conversation explored challenges and innovations in wound care, particularly for diabetic patients, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and basic wound care principles. The panel also discussed remote patient monitoring, and guidelines for appropriate use of wound care products. Dr. Steinberg emphasized that the scientific basis for the mainstream skin substitutes is robust, but agreed that abuse by outliers needs to be curtailed so that patients who are in need can continue to get them in a timely manner

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Ways AI is Reshaping Private Practice
From ambient transcription to smart scheduling, AI is helping doctors cut costs, save time, and improve care. Here’s where it’s making the biggest difference — and what to consider before you invest.
4. Personalizing risk analysis and care planning
AI-powered tools are increasingly capable of reviewing patient data — including lab results, medication history, and wearable device inputs — to identify patterns and flag health risks early.
This predictive capability allows physicians to stratify patient risk, tailor treatment plans, and prioritize appointments based on urgency. It's an emerging way that AI supports improved population health without increasing physician workload.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY |
7 Essential Investing Rules We All Should Know
Here are seven essential rules every investor should know. They may not turn you into a billionaire, but they just might help you build the future you want.
4. Stay calm and invest during market volatility.
Of course, sticking with your investments sounds easy… until the market drops. That's when emotion creeps in and investors can panic. The real problem usually isn't what the market does. It's what the investor does in response. Since 1980, the average intra-year decline in the stock market has been 14.1%, according to J.P. Morgan Asset Management. Yet, the market still ended in positive territory in 34 of those 45 years, or 75% of the time. So, volatility is normal. And often short-lived.
That's why Thomas Balcom, founder of 1650 Wealth Management, encourages a more opportunistic mindset during market swings. "Whenever there is a pullback in the stock market, long-term investors should consider adding to their investment portfolio," he says.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC EDUCATION) |
RE: Big Beautiful Bill and Podiatric Education
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
The budget bill that President Trump signed, The One Big Beautiful Bill, may have just put the final nail in the podiatric education discussion. It seems there is a $50,000 limit on professional school loans per year and a $200,000 lifetime cap. There is a federal student combined cap of $257,500 for lifetime undergrad plus graduate loans. All our discussions concerning the future of podiatric education may have been a waste of time when one considers the undergrad plus graduate loans needed to become a podiatrist.
Students can always obtain private loans from the APMA. When I sarcastically called for students’ parents to take out an additional mortgage, I never dreamed it would come to fruition so quickly. Our discussions on podiatric education just became as absurd as Sartre’s view of the world. Let's see how podiatry responds to today's crisis.
If anyone remembers the Vietnam War movie “Hamburger Hill”, there was a recurring refrain throughout the movie that went “It don’t mean nothin’, not a thing.” Ladies and Gentlemen, write your Congressmen and Women. It worked to end the war in Vietnam.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE ADVANTAGE) |
RE: American Hospital Association Testifies at House Committee Hearing
From: Paul Kesselman DPM
This week, I had the pleasure of attending (virtually) a House Committee Oversight Committee meeting dedicated to issues with Medicare Part C Plans. Many organizations testified about the lack of transparency and the inconsistency of these plans regarding prior authorizations for medical treatment in and outside of the acute care setting, and the "peer" reviewers’ credentials and names being on these correspondences. The AHA called for a uniform set of guidelines for all MCR part C plans. This regards prior authorizations for medical/surgical treatment, clearing up delays in post-discharge from hospitals to post-acute care (SNF), and forcing carriers to reveal the names and credentials of those performing the prior authorizations and peer reviews.
Every ethical provider should be screaming for these uniform standards. This event was also covered by Becker's Health Care. And hooray for the judicial system which dismissed Humana's lawsuit against CMS regarding its downgrading of Humana's Star Rating, which Humana allegedly accuses CMS was improper. But many suggest that the real reason for the lawsuit was so that Humana could recoup some of the $M of dollars it lost in revenue due to this downgrade. What affect this may have for 2026 remains to be seen.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC STUDENT RNROLLMENT) |
RE: Podiatry Colleges Application Statistics
From: H. David Gottlieb, DPM
There seems to be some confusion as to how and where to find the statistics regarding applications and applicants to the 11 colleges of podiatric medicine. The American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine [AACPM] has a website - https://aacpm.org/. The AACPM is the organization which handles applications for podiatry colleges and residencies. Information on various topics are readily available to all who take the time to seek it out. As the current years' application process is still ongoing, the statistics for this year are not yet complete and thus not publishable.
"Approximately one thousand applicants apply to podiatric medical school each academic year. First-year enrollment totals range from 500-600 per year. For the 2024-25 academic year, 839 individuals applied to at least one of the eleven podiatric medical schools. A total of 525 first-year students entered into study in the fall of 2024. Men made up 282 (57%) and women made up 243 (43%) of matriculating students."
There are other statistics available, such as grade point averages, MCAT scores, and more. All one has to do is go to their website and click on the page with the information one is looking for. As someone once told me, in most things, with the Internet and search engines, there is no longer an excuse for ignorance.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) |
From: Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM, Steven Finer, DPM
I have had a financial planner from Edward Jones for 40 years, and they have done a great job for me. In retirement, I will have more money to spend than I could ever use. Most physicians are notoriously poor with financial issues. I would not expect my financial planner to diagnose and treat tarsal tunnel and I would rather trust a reputable, educated financial planner than trying to do it myself!
Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM, South Bend, IN
We have been fortunate to have a good financial planner. I also run a smaller plan with our son. Some of the key tips are the following: Steady investment over the years. No panic selling as this will create tax problems on gains and for those of us on Medicare an increase in your monthly premiums. As you get older, move away from individual stocks and go for mutual funds and things of that nature. Try to have an emergency fund for big ticket purchases.
Steven Finer, DPM, Philadelphia, PA
