NY Podiatrist Recommends Regular Foot Soaks
Sandal season exposes feet to a host of bacteria and fungus, and men, in particular, need at-home pedicures and Epsom salt foot soaks, said Miguel Cunha, DPM, a nationally known podiatrist. "It's not uncommon for men to disregard their foot health until they're experiencing severe pain," said Dr. Cunha. Soak your feet regularly – This can benefit not only your feet, but your overall health by relaxing muscles, reducing pain, and lowering stress.
|
Dr. Miguel Cunha |
To eliminate calluses, Cunha recommends soaking your feet for 20 minutes in four parts water, one part apple cider vinegar, and three tablespoons of Epsom salt, which helps break down dry skin. Then apply either castor oil, tea tree oil, or eucalyptus oil, and exfoliate with a pumice stone. Cunha also recommends Epsom salt – which is magnesium sulfate – for blisters. "The magnesium can help reduce swelling and pain, irrigating, cleansing, and drying blisters. This also helps reduce the painful rawness while expediting the healing," says Cunha.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS |
OH Podiatrist Co-Chairs Health Task Force for Rural Areas
The House Ways and Means Committee last week created a bipartisan Rural and Underserved Communities Health Task Force to explore the challenges of healthcare delivery and identify policy options. The group will be led by four co-chairs: Reps. Brad Wenstrup, R-OH, Jodey Arrington, R-TX, Danny Davis, D-IL, and Terri Sewell, D-AL.
|
Dr. Brad Wenstrup |
“As a doctor representing both rural and underserved areas in Congress, I know that rural patients are lacking access to medical providers,” said Wenstrup, a former podiatrist. “I’m eager to work together to find bipartisan solutions that improve the access, quality, and cost of healthcare in our rural areas.”

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR |
$4 Old Navy Flip-Flops Outperform $28 Havaianas
Flip-flop sandals are an integral part of the summer experience. They’re comfortable, easy to throw on when running to the pool or beach, and show off a new pedicure. And, though they have a reputation of being the most dangerous shoe, even doctors fall for their charms. "I wear them, too," says Yena Do, DPM ,a podiatrist at Cambridge Podiatry in Cambridge, MA. "They're easy to put on, allow your feet to feel liberated, and are a staple for summer."
|
Dr. Yena Do |
They can also be dirt cheap or relatively pricey. Such is the case with two prominent flip-flop makers, Old Navy, and Havaiana, which make sandals that retail for about $4 or $26, respectively. With a price difference like that, it’s easy to assume that the quality differences in both shoes should also be vast—but is it? After extensive tests by Revierer's senior scientist Julia MacDougall, the $4 Old Navy Flip-flops outperformed the $26 Havaianas.

TELEHEALTH NEWS |
Virtual Visits Up 1,400% from 2014-18
Virtual visits are becoming much more frequent, new data show. Discharge-related telehealth consultations saw the second-most growth among all commercial insurance claims for telehealth, according to Fair Health, which analyzed its database of 28 billion claims, the largest repository in the country.
|
Non-hospital based telehealth usage |
Non-hospital-based telehealth fueled the surge in the burgeoning technology's growth, rising 1,393% from 2014 to 2018, according to Fair Health's new white paper. These types of virtual consultations or remote monitoring that occurs between providers and patients outside of the hospital made up 84% of all telehealth claim lines, compared to 52% in 2014. Most of those encounters were in urban areas.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Questions to Ask about wRVU Compensation - Part 6
Physicians employed by a medical group, hospital, or academic institution are commonly compensated using a productivity formula based on work relative value units (wRVUs). Since wRVUs drive your paycheck, it’s to your advantage to ask questions in order to understand how the system works — and specifically how your employer counts wRVUs.
6. Can I see a detailed transaction report each month of the codes submitted and wRVUs credited? Shrewd physicians insist on reviewing the transaction report each month to ensure all services were billed and to confirm the correct wRVUs were credited for each code. Consider keeping your own log of codes submitted and reconciling it with the monthly report to confirm all services were captured. Doing this monthly is a good habit, allowing you to catch discrepancies early so they can be quickly addressed. To ensure you are paid for the work you do, it’s essential for physicians to be actively involved with reviewing wRVU calculations. Likewise, it’s important to have open and ongoing communication between physicians and administrators to maintain an accurate compensation plan as well as high physician engagement.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Podiatry Surgical Burrs or Other Hand Piece Options for MIS
I have been using Foredom duplex hand pieces for over 30 years. They accepted 1/16" bits. They no longer make these quick change hand pieces that fit these standard podiatry bits; or at least I'm not able to find them. Does anyone know of a company that sells either 3/32" podiatry surgical burrs or other hand piece options used for minimally invasive surgeries?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2 |
I read with sadness about the passing of Doug Weidner, DPM. I was a resident at St. Luke's Medical and Children's Center in 1964-1965 when Art Helfand was running a hospital clinic. I also served with Doug Weidner at Ft. Campbell, Ky for more then two years during 1966-1967 as a podiatrist in the U.S. Army. We worked well together but, like so many things, had only a few contacts after military service.
