APMA STATE COMPONENT NEWS
NY  Podiatrist Receives APMA Meritorious Service Award

NYSPMA Vice President Paul Liswood, DPM has been selected as a recipient of the 2016 APMA Meritorious Service Award recognizing outstanding accomplishments on the local, state, or regional level in scientific, professional, and civic endeavors that have had a profound impact on podiatric medicine.

Dr. Paul Liswood

The award, approved by both the APMA Awards & Recognition Committee and the APMA Board of Trustees, honors Dr. Liswood for his role in advocating for the NY podiatric scope of practice, extending the message about podiatry’s critical role in preventative care, and his numerous research-based presentations on the significant healthcare cost reductions by using a foot and ankle specialist.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Ankle Sprains and Fractures Lead to Longstanding Arthritis: TX Podiatrist

According to Ashley Ledger, DPM, "Minor injuries start to wear down ankle joints over time, and when the ankle is moved out of alignment briefly during a sprain, it causes friction between the soft ends of the bone. The soft ends can wear down causing bone on bone erosion. Repeated sprains hasten the process."

Dr. Ashley Ledger

"When the bones of the ankle joint are broken, that type of trauma to the joint can occur in a much faster period of time. More patients are seeking relief for painful ankles and this trend plays out in the examining rooms of many foot and ankle surgeons every day, but seems to worsen in winter months," says Dr. Ledger.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS
Aussie Podiatrist Balances Profession and Sports Careers

The Queensland Firebirds may be within touching distance of one of the biggest games of their careers, but they remain busy juggling careers with the sport they love. Wing attack Caitlyn Nevins, 29, has balanced worked her day job as a podiatrist and trained with the squad during the season. "Yesterday I trained in the morning and worked, and then trained in the evening. So I left home at 5:20 am and then I didn't get home in the evening until 7:30 pm," Nevins said.

Caitlyn Nevins

Nevins is looking forward to the day the game becomes professional. "Netball has always been quite supportive of education and I hope they continue supporting education and a career away from the sport," she said.

HIPAA UPDATE
When Asked, Covered Entities Must Give Patients Records by Email

Many covered entities (CEs) haven’t yet come to grips with the fact that, since September 2013, the final rule implementing the HITECH Act has mandated that patients can receive test results, health information, and other documents from their designated medical records set by email. The time is now to make policy and IT adjustments to allow this. In recent guidance, the HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has made it clear that this is a patient’s right and that putting obstacles in a patient’s way “must change.”

Deven McGraw, OCR’s deputy director, tells RPP in an interview that while she “very much appreciates the steadfastness of security teams” who oppose unsecure email as a way to send records, the requesting patient “gets it in the way she wants.” It doesn’t matter whether the CE has a policy against emailing to patients; if the CE has the capacity, McGraw stresses, then it must comply. “We assumed in every institution there is a capacity” to send PHI unencrypted via email, McGraw says.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

MACRA, MIPS, and APMs — Are You Ready? - Part 8

If your practice chooses to participate in an Alternative Payment Model (APM) rather than MIPS, here are two key points to consider:

2. Lump-sum incentive payments

One of the advantages to participating in an APM is that qualifying participants will not be subject to MIPS adjustments and will receive a lump-sum incentive payment equal to 5 percent of the prior year's estimated aggregate expenditures under the fee schedule. The 5 percent incentive payment is available from 2019 to 2024, but beginning in 2026, the fee schedule growth rate will be higher for qualifying APM participants than for other practitioners. Should you participate in a qualified APM at levels below the MACRA thresholds, don't worry; it allows physicians to improve their MIPS scores.
