Play-it-Safe to Protect Young Athletes’ Feet and Ankles: MA Podiatrist
In today’s competitive youth sports landscape, injuries are common, and when they do occur, young athletes are often pressured to play through the pain. “The back-to-school season is prime time for foot and ankle injuries from fall sports like soccer, football, and cross country,” says Richard Baker, DPM, a foot and ankle surgeon and fellow member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).
|
|
Dr. Richard Baker |
“Fortunately, there are many steps parents, coaches, and young athletes can take to prevent injuries from occurring in the first place and to discourage kids from playing through pain,” says Dr. Baker. Encourage warm-up exercises. Calf stretches and light jogging before competition help warm up ligaments and blood vessels, reducing injury risk.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
Ways to Successfully Gather Online Reviews for Your Practice
Patients often rely on Google searches to find a healthcare provider, and the number of positive reviews your practice has determines how well you’ll rank when searched. The more reviews you get, the more likely you are to bring in new patients. Here are some ways to win more reviews for your practice and attract more patients over time.
6. The key to reviews: Ask!
Don’t feel like you’ve got to start all the previously mentioned items at once. Try one or two that you feel the most comfortable with, and as you master each one, layer on the rest. No matter what, though, the first step to getting positive online reviews is to ask!

| CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Coding Exostectomy with a Skin Flap
How should I code a exostectomy with a skin flap? The exostosis has caused recurrent ulcerations for this patient. I am not sure if I include the ulcer code for the procedure or not. I am considering:
CPT 28104
CPT 14040
Miranda Hook, Wichita, KS
Response: You did not mention the location of the exostosis, but based on the coding you’ve mentioned, CPT 28104, I assume it is for a metatarsal or tarsal bone. If this is the case you are coding the bone resection correctly.
As for the skin flap that you will be coding CPT 14040, your operative report should clearly describe a tissue rearrangement in order to close a defect site of the skin as opposed to a skin excision to remove the ulcer and gain exposure to the bone deformity. If indeed you are creating a skin flap of some type and transferring this for primary closure, I believe your coding is correct and justified.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 | |
RE: Podiatry Meetings..."We Cannot Direct the Wind But We can Adjust the Sails."
From: George A. Cioe
In short, we support professional meetings because we hope to talk with doctors in person, face-to-face, in an environment that facilitates a conversation about their practice and our company. It’s that simple.
Talking with a doctor and his staff at a meeting without patients waiting in treatment rooms, office schedule time constraints, the urgent care needs of post-surgical cases, or patients with acute onset symptoms or injuries, is what makes exhibiting at a conference worth every penny. Sometimes we open a new account, ship products to the doctor for an in-office trial, sell products to existing customers that receive special conference pricing, or simply make “lunch and learn” appointments as a follow-up to continue the discussion or train staff.
These are all great outcomes, and it was the norm for many years. Then Covid-19 happened and now, unfortunately, this is the exception. We currently attend conferences and see only one-tenth of the doctors...
Editor's note: George Cioe's extended-length letter can be read here.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 | |
From: Mark E Weaver, DPM
Yes, ditto on the ABFAS. I've always hated the saying, "The podiatric profession eats their own young." Well, I guess they eat their own old as well. Ha! No age discrimination here! But, you know, I really think the ABFAS has worked hard for me my whole career. I suppose that is better than a fake gold watch after 40 years. Besides, since 1982, I have never known them to be concerned about anybody's feelings.
But I can say that they have come a long way from the days a candidate sat at a desk and three doctors sitting on a bed grilled him (me) in some cheap airport motel room. I salute and I thank you ABFAS and I salute the older podiatrists (Guido, Don, and Harold) who practically donated their time to help propagate the first board certification which has lasted these many years.
Mark E Weaver, DPM, Fort Myers, FL
